      Not far behind you in age! Spent most of my youth on a 350X and went through quite a few quads until I landed on the 2006 Honda 450R. I sold that one back in 2011 and really didn’t ride again until I bought a SxS ten years later. It wasn’t long until I said to hell with the SxS and bought an Outlander 1000XXC. I literally had that for two weeks and saw a Yamaha YFZ450R at my local dealership and walked out with it. The next day I ordered a ton from Pete’s website and I’m full fledged back into riding hard again. It’s great having both the sport quad and the trail sofa to rip around on! You can get back into it and you’ll love it!

    ☝🥇THIS was the clear game changer for the Raptor!
    This exact setup, with either Rocket Ron S3's (triple rate) or Elka's ... makes a night and day difference!
    Additionally... this would be the very first thing anyone who is not only serious about trail riding, but if you are someone who likes to push the limits, this is where its at! Id definitely do all of this FIRST to a stock raptor if I had to do it all over again!
    Ohh.. AND the steering stabilizer! THATS also a must!
    Killer work.. KILLER VIDEO Pete! 🔥🔥🔥

    I had a front long travel set up on two different quads over the years. One was a banshee and the other one was a 89 250 R. I actually could not stand to ride either quad. It felt too wide too heavy and seem to hit every bump on the trail. I removed it from both the quads and went back to stock. So much better for me anyway. You did a fantastic job on the install!

    I'll never sell my 2006 yamaha raptor, just keep modding it. So far, I got a plus 5mm stroker crankshaft, 105.5mm cylinder and piston, plus 3mm intake valves plus 2mm exhaust valves. Stage 3 cam, 11:1 compression piston, didn't want to go too high. EFI controller, freed up intake and exhaust, 23 tall tires up front and 22 inches out Back full Hinson clutch set up. Also installed a new rear axle that's wider as well. Plus it's geared to the moon 🌙. At 75mph in 4th I can pull it up then shift into 5th and it's just stupid. But very fun. This combat veteran loves riding it's my happy place. Probably find something slow for my beautiful exotic Lebanese wife like a Polaris scrambler 400 2-stroke 4x4. But easy to upgrade and toss in a 2-stroke motor from a Polaris RMK or Dragon snowmobile lol. If she gets bored 😴.....

    If you use a pickle fork to separate ball joints and such they typically destroy the boot. Hitting it with a hammer like you did is the best way I feel to do it. Was thought hat way in high-school in autoshop from retired mechanic teacher.

    Pete 1st off you are so lucky to have a sick riding are like that local. 2nd glad to see someone else use the Hess link so many people said they don’t do anything at all. I used 1 on mine but with a single spring rear shock. We have very similar setups I also run yfz450r long travel with JDperformance arms. Another where everyone says go buy aftermarket shocks don’t waste your money on revalves. But you and Rocket Ron killed it

    • @PeteHager
      @PeteHager  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The JD arms are nice! I looked at those awhile back. My friend Patrick Riggs recommended the Hess link and so did Ron. I saw Patrick’s Raptor just eating whoops in Florida so I knew I wanted a similar set up. I’m super happy with Ron’s work. Someday I hope to try aftermarket shocks so I can see the comparison with the oems but that will be quite awhile from now 😅👍

    I did the same thing with my Raptor. Lowering it makes a massive difference. The linkage I got is an adjustable length so you can adjust how much lower you have it. I think I went down about 1.5 inches with +2 A arms and rear axle. So much better in turns. It's almost impossible to tip on turns.

    On the topic of taking a hammer to suspension components: it's totally fine but get yourself a brass/rubber hammer or mallet. Hardened steel hammers on aluminum suspension can ruin your day if you unga-bunga it a little too much. Awesome stuff though!

    Pete, for the record, you removed the tie rod ends correctly. Leave a few threads of the nut like that and give the housing hell. Another reason for putting the nut back on is if you hit a glancing blow and mar up the threads, you won't be able to reuse that tie rod end (if you aren't replacing it).

    • @caleb6200
      @caleb6200 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, brake fluid is water soluble, but extremely flammable and will strip paint. If spilled on painted surfaces, spray down with water and it'll run right off and dilute.

    Sick quad bro! I love your build!
    Nice info for the most part. The claw hammer (carpenter tool on mechanical work) shoulda been a ball peen and with the brakes you can just open the bleeder valve and let it sit open while working on something else until gravity does the job of pumping for you. Then proceed with the normal process.

    Long travel is nice but you dont actually get more suspension travel with long travel shocks you just get more tunability of the springs on the shocks (BNR Motorsports has a video on this). Either way LT or Standard travel with a proper re-spring and new valving with extended A-Arms is the way to go for sure!

    • @RunGMCSyclone
      @RunGMCSyclone 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm assuming the BNR video is specifically talking about the YFZ450R as he even states other bikes do gain wheel travel. I had to watch it because that's the first time I have heard that. The raptor being almost 4 inches narrower than the 450R has to be the main reason for that difference.

    Throw a Barkers Dual exhaust on that thing and you'll never get off that. if you do, take the baffles out. cheers friend ;)

    Is it possible to get these shocks for standard travel? Looks sick, and I’m sure it rides great, but just too wide for 50in trails imo still awesome 🤘🏼

      @PeteHager  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They make long travel .5 XC arms that only widen half an inch over stock on each side. Plus they increase ground clearance. You could set them up with YFZR shocks and it would be sick! That would be wild on the Michigan trails! 👌

      Exactly…too wide for me.

      Hey Kevin. Rocket Ron is only on facebook I'm pretty sure. He mainly does business over the phone. His number is (317)-319-4381 👍

      This is at Appleton OHV park in west central minnesota. It’s not the biggest place but it’s a lot of fun! Awesome to hear you’re keeping your YFZ. I love mine! 😬

    Think of caster as automatic counter steer that activates when the suspension compress'. You drift constantly, so choose your speed and adjust caster till it self corrects with no steering input. Magically this gives you the best turn in also.
    You don't align toe to set your Ackerman? Have you got a laser pointer to check if your hubs are even compatible with your toe setting?
