How We Run Sled Dogs in Fall

  • Our Yukon dog, Tenshi, is mostly Malamute. Bred for pulling freight, she needs lots of exercise to keep her healthy and happy. It's fall and there's not enough snow on the ground yet for sleds. Tenshi learns, with a little help from the engine and a few Huskies, how to pull an ATV, or quad as we call them here in the Yukon.

Hey guys, great video once again! Does Tenshi pull hard or does she just keep the slack out of the line? And have you tried skijoring with her? :)

Lulu... I was just thinking about you and wondering if you are keeping warm out there in “Mendenhall”. Tenshi does not pull hard. You may have noticed in the video that we shortened her tug-line to encourage her to keep it tight. She enjoys the praise and the exercise! She seems to like being a part of the team and is even vocal at times when we stop. She seems to be saying, “Let’s get going Huskies!” Haha. I went cross country skiing with her for the first time yesterday. She ran free as I’m not too confident on skis. With patience and practise, we may just skijor yet!!! Fingers and paws crossed. 🤗🐶. And.... we will see how she pulls the sled one day now that we have enough snow. She’s busy snoring now. ❤️

@@tntnaturecon Yes, we're warm and toasty :) This is my first skiing season, so I totally understand. Haven't skijored with Arma, but that's also because she's crazy and I have problems holding her doing canicross sometimes, haha. Best wishes from Mendenhall to Mendenhall!

Great video. Are the dogs pulling the full weight of the quad in neutral or are you driving the quad and the dogs just running in front?

Hello Chrystal. Thanks for subscribing to our channel and for the great question. The dogs are not pulling the full weight of the quad. We are driving and they are running in front. We stay at a speed where the dogs keep their tug lines tight which helps them feel they are doing the work. They love to pull. We are not sure if Tenshi will ever get the hang of it, but we giving her the chance to try.
When the huskies were younger and there were a few more of them, we would put the quad in neutral and they would pull on flat surfaces.
