Had to pause to video to note that pain is accepted to have an important role in evolution, as a motivation to move away from conditions which decrease the well-being of an organism and its chances to survive. For example, you're more likely to look for food if you're hungry and suffering because of it - as opposed to just being hungry. Same with too much or too little warmth, cold, water, etc. There's also a family of people with a genetic mutation that makes then invulnerable to pain. Their life have more accidents etc.

his point is why a system should have evolved requiring responses in the first place and for us once here how it might have managed do that in the first place which gets back to the hard problem of consciousness ie. the nerve sends a signal to the brain "and there is pain" might as well go pray to jesus to turn water into wine

@@JatunRisba Lama Alan Wallace initially refers to the text at 1:07:20. The text (more like a book!) referred to is by Buddhaghosa, in The Path of Purification. Lama Alan reads Chapter IV, 33; IV, 124; IV, 125. You can find the entire text/book on-line here: www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/authors/nanamoli/PathofPurification2011.pdf
I only know this, as I have the notes from the retreat. I wrote to the Vajrayana Institute who were kind enough to share these notes with me. I hope this is helpful.
