Alex Garland said he read the book once, then wrote the script without referring to the book. He wanted to convey the feeling of the book, not the details. (I acknowledge that Katie thinks he failed in this.) Loved the movie, only the last few minutes felt cliched.

This is one of those adaptations that was greatly benefitted by only being one part of a series and not committed to being a literal recreation because the series is way too bonkers to be understood by casual audiences. It would've been awful if they tried to do Ghostbird

When you said that the psychologist was screaming "Annihilation! Annihilation!" the only thing I could think about were the Daleks and their "EXTERMINATE!" XD

There may not be a mutant bear in the Annihilation book but Jeff VanderMeer also wrote the book Borne, which has a GIGANTIC FLYING murder bear

The movie is very different from the book, but for me both stories work individually. Both are good.

Satisfying discussion-like always! I’m new to this podcast but I’m loving it.
The movie is interesting because it’s so metaphorical. It’s deeply in touch with its themes and arguably explores those themes in interesting ways. However, strong themes don’t make good movies. I found it weirdly boring and lifeless despite what it had to say about grief, trauma, and transformation.

I'd love to hear a comparison between this series and roadside picnic, which I believe inspired it

I understand the criticisms, but the movie did steer me to picking up the book. For all the negatives, it is sad that few woman in the film industry bothered to take notice of this female led cast, but died on the hill promoting and defending lesser all women led movies (Ghostbusters).

I remember hating the movie (except for nightmare bear) and then reading that the theme was supposedly 'self-destruction' and spending an hour ranting about that

This was absolutely fantastic! As a fan of both the movie and the book for different reasons, I loved your discussion over them! Always a pleasure to watch another podcast from you.
Out of curiosity, do you have any intention to review/discuss/roast *Fourth Wing* by Rebecca Yarros? It would be an understatement to say that it has blown up the book world this year and I am dying to know your thoughts!

I enjoyed the movie for the vibes and the cool visuals...but it isn't the book, and I ADORED the book. Basically, the book is a Lovecraft story being experienced by someone who is more like me (in, like, how they react to things) and that was amazing. The sequels are quite different, but also enjoyable, and continue the feel of being both a tribute and middle finger to Lovecraft.

As someone who watched the movie first. Loved it, and then went to read the book Annihalation. I have to say I disagree with Katie that the movie was boring. More in line with Maria in that the script writer read the book and then did his own story with the same plot as characters. I'm in firm belief that you could not adapt this book as it was. For the same reason that cosmic horror stories are so difficult to adapt. So much of what happens in this film is internal observation of strange phenomena and changes happening. It would probably be more boring than the film we got. By making it more personal between the characters and how they each reacted to the change, made it an engaging film for me.
The ending of the film was a bit confusing and by far the weakest. But essentially did a what if what happened with the 11th expedition happened again. Also i noticed you kept on saying adapting the series. But it was clear the film only wanted to tell the first books story and stop.
Overall enjoyed the analysis. I enjoyed both the book and the film

How do you guys (anyone reading this) feel about the similarities and differences between this series of books and the movie Stalker? The concepts are very similar but the Zone/Area X are quite different in their thematic purpose etc.

The bear is copied from Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun. It's called an alzabo. I don't think we see one until book three, but they're important to the plot before then.

I love the movie so much that I read the books (I don’t read sorry) and I did love them also but I think once you understand Alex Garland’s intent as a writer and director “adapting” Annihilation, the vast differences make a lot more sense. I don’t fully believe in a book being impossible to adapt but the reason the Southern Reach trilogy is special is precisely the reason why it would truly be a nightmare to make a coherent movie or tv series that does it justice

I watched the movie first and loved it, then read the book and it changed my brain chemistry. When I rewatched the movie, I felt absolute repulsion. I literally cannot fathom what I was thinking when I first watched the movie

  • @EricaCalman

Yeah it would have been almost impossible to adapt the book into a movie. Even a TV series you'd have to be very different form most shows and it would be hard to get people to watch it. So much of what makes the book good is conveying the sense of human beings experiencing something they can't comprehend, and there's a reason the star child scene from 2001 is somewhat infamous, as cool as it was.

The prose was so bad I couldn’t get through it. Example: "It had become dark by then and there came soon after the strange mournful call in the night that we knew must have natural causes but created a little shiver regardless."
Overly passive gibberish, not to mention that a BIOLOGIST should probably be able to tell us what type of animal it sounded like. She knows all four of them shivered but she doesn't know what type of animal made the call. Lines like that evoke nothing but a headache.
