Just listen to his calling for the goals in game 7 in 2024, you can really hear it. Another great example is the 2023 series against Tampa. This is why I liked the previous commentator, Jim Hughson (retired),and TSN commentators better than SN.

My Sharks playing the Kings in the playoffs in 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2016 made me really hate them, but it fizzled out when the Kings started rebuilding. The Ducks' rebuild started not long after the Kings', and then the Sharks started theirs a few years later. Based on positions in cycles, I could see it becoming another triangle in California while the Knights are rebuilding.
Right now I will admit I hate the Knights more than any other team. I did the NHLQuebec thing and it was VGK, CHI, STL, LAK, EDM, ANA, VAN, WSH (capfriendly), DAL (now that Pav retired I can hate them again), CGY from hated to tenth most hated.

Easily the biggest factor is when a team is dominant, they win games. And they win series. They eliminate teams, and they eliminate the storylines and would be stories that people would have remembered if only they had beaten those darn penguins / lightning / whoever knocked out your team. Gretzky was way more complimentary towards the Panthers, and that's been across the last few playoff runs since he lives in South Florida now and has spent time and money investing in youth hockey here. Can't knock him for having a soft spot for the teams he played for, since he at least has tried to be dignified and throw in good words about our players and team in between it all.
Messier on the other hand was completely shameless. I don't even think he acknowledged that there was another team on the ice- it was ALWAYS framed from a Rangers/Oilers point-of-view. As if they were the 'good guys' and the Panthers were a computer simulation that just existed to be overcome.

I grew up an Orioles fan, but I moved to St Louis right around the time that they signed Albert Belle, and let Mike Mussina go to their biggest rival, the Yankees. I really disliked Albert Belle (as did everyone), and I really liked and admired Mike Mussina, and I could understand why he went to New York. I didn't get angry at Mussina at all for going to the Orioles' biggest rival. I blamed the Orioles' management, and it made me less of an Orioles fan for quite a while, and it was easy to switch my primary allegiance to St Louis for baseball. I didn't get angry at Albert Pujols when he left my other favorite baseball team a few years later, nor did I get angry at the St Louis Cardinals management. They didn't want to overpay Albert Pujols, and I was glad that they didn't. But I didn't blame Albert Pujols for taking the bigger contract either.
It depends on how it happens, but I'm willing to blame just the player, just the team, both the player and the team, or even neither one (like with St Louis & Pujols). For a hockey example, I don't blame Kuznetsov or the Washington Capitals management for how things ended for Kuzy in Washington DC.

Back when the playoff format was a mini-playoff to win the Patrick, Adams, Smythe and Norris division, teams came up against each other over and over in the playoffs. Rivalries galore. The worst is when one team isn't really better, but simply has the other team's number and keeps eliminating them. Stanley Cup dreams dashed. Bad goal songs are like an extra knife to the gut when your team is knocked out. Or when the other team is mounting a comeback and you hear it two or three times in a few minutes. Rage intensifies! Another is bandwagon fans. People who aren't even fans like popular, famous teams. I moved to Detroit in 1995 and got into hockey during that year's playoffs. One team I will always hate is the New Jersey Devils, both because of that year's Stanley Cup Finals series (the first series I ever saw my team lose), but also because of the branding (it's easy to hate a team called the "Devils").
Of course in the next year's playoffs, Detroit started a blood feud with the Colorado Avalanche, which immediately gave me multiple reasons to hate them ("Playoff Series", "You Again?", "Dirty hit", "Dirty player"). Those are the only two teams that I really hate.
I also root against Toronto in the playoffs, but that isn't a real emotional "hate" thing. I just want to pass Toronto's Stanley Cup count for #2 overall, and Toronto getting back to winning championships would not be helpful to that end. It's in the same sense that I root against whoever is playing against the Red Wings on any given night, even if I normally like that other team, simply because they are in the way of what my team is trying to accomplish.

    Where I have lived:
    Ottawa and Calgary
    Who have I supported:
    Penguins, Canucks, Senators, Flames
    Teams that I have disliked:
Avalanche, Lightning, Kings, Maple Leafs, Canadiens, Sabres
Fluky moment that still hurts whenever I see in on NHL Highlights videos:
2011 when Vancouver advanced to Stanley Cup Final over San Jose. Puck ricocheted off a stanchion and ended up in the net. Camera shots of my former neighbour Kent Huskins will live forever because the puck allegedly deflected off him.
The 'You Again' moment that hurt me was when I was cheering for the Sharks and they blew a 3-0 first round series lead against LA in 2014. What made matters worse was that the Kings wound up winning their second Stanley Cup. THANKS DARRYL!!!
I used to be the PA announcer for an AJHL team and like most people, had a strong dislike for the Brooks Bandits. What's worse is when I see Cale Makar dominate on the blue line when I saw him get away with numerous penalties that were NOT CALLED!! Worse still, I kept mispronouncing his last name. How embarrassing. Watching him win awards with Colorado frustrates me even more.
I agree with certain teams that overplay the same goal song (cough Chicago) in one game. My pet peeve living here in Calgary are the songs created by radio stations or fans to get fans pumped up for the Flames only to lose in the first round. Back in 2004, Vibe 98.5 (now Virgin Radio 98.5) created 'In Da Dome' to the tune of 50 Cent's 'In Da Club'. It got a ton of airplay during the Flames incredible run. Unfortunately, whenever the Flames appeared in the playoffs afterwards, the radio station brought the song back into the playlist. I have always that other playoff songs have been a curse to the team.
