how can I find out what problem I'm solving on say the business side? Can I just ask a biz leader "Tell me about some problems you have"

You'll want to focus on one problem in particular. So you can agree with business stakeholders on what you are working on. For example, let's say you think conversion from within an app isn't good and you think it's because of onboarding. The business problem would be around lack of conversions which means less money. The user problem would be around not fully understanding the product and being confused about the value (which is an onboarding problem). You're how might we would be something like, "how might we improve onboarding so more users convert within the first X number of days." Etc.
