The fact that Mark Rippetoe and Mike Matthews are friends is one of the greatest things that exists. They are just awesome together. They could do this every week.
I debated a coworker about the women's soccer pay "scandal." I argued that they need to keep their issues out of the court of public opinion and renegotiate their bullshit contracts.* I was told that I don't care about equal pay for women. [Context: I am a working mom with two kids and a full-time job. I was debating my boss, the male CEO of the company. He makes more than me, obviously. But if we were to be paid on the merits of self-awareness, I would probably make triple what he does.] *Mr. Deeds!
Great to get these 2 together again. I’ve been training for almost 18 months now, I wasted the first 6 months doing rubbish bodybuilder type crap, I then followed a Mike Matthews BLS type program for a few months and have now been following SS for a couple of months. Both programs are great and these two guys really know what they’re talking about. There’s a lot of nonsense out there in the fitness industry to avoid if you’re a newbie. Start with the advice of one of these 2! Great video 👍 more of this type of stuff please
I can relate to you. I am on bls program n combing knowledge from starting strength book for my compound lifts. Feels great. Starting strength with bls is a must read. Have you read practical programimg?
Aman Ahluwalia honestly.... no 🤣 but I’ve done 8 weeks of something pretty close to SS. I know “I’m not doing the program” but it’s still having decent results, I plan to read it though. I’ve just this week added GOMAD and it has helped. Planning to probably run SS until LP slows or stops and then maybe go for BLS again properly. I’ve made some TH-cam videos to track my progress, the main issue I’m having is form while training at home without a coach but I’m slowly improving
This FFMI thing is great, made me look at myself differently :) With a BMI of 31 and a 26 % BF most would say you are fat (obese !) but with an FFMI 23 it all looks much better. I am 34, 1,83, 105 kg, waist 104 cm. BF by US NAVY method, also relevant comapared to reference physique photos ... Although still not strong by Starting Strength standards, I try my best ... The biggest limiting factor for strength growth here in Central Europe that most gyms have no safety racks ... this limits your bench and squat by a great deal ... especially after a bad experience of squatting down with a 100 kilos and not being able to stand back up, shouting for help :) Pre lockdown Bench 95 kg, Squat 140 kg, Deadlift 180 kg, Press 50 kg. Keep up the great job with the Podcast !
Had a good laugh to myself when I saw the "Starting Strength" sign and then saw only a part of the sign below it which said "....dio" (hidden behind Mark's left shoulder) and thought "Man imagine if that said "Starting Strength" "Cardio" and not "Radio"
I got both bigger, leaner, stronger, and beyond bigger, leaner, stronger. I am still trying to hit the numbers necessary to start doing the workouts in the second book. I wasted years before I bought his book last year. Definitely worth reading if you're someone trying to get into weight training and don't know what exercises to do, how to structure a program properly, etc.
I just calculated my FFMI for the first time and I was surprised. Body weight: 111.7kg Body fat percentage: 31.3% Height: 173cm Lean mass: 76.74 kg Fat Free Mass Index (FFMI): 25.69 Adjusted/Normalized FFMI: 26.12
Marks receiving to sending ratio has slightly improved over the years... but still sending to much :) Besided that you are awesome Mark. Loved the book with the same title as this show to.
Great podcast guys brilliant to Mike on other podcast, it's because of Mike I changed my way of eating and lifting and also starting strength and now I have gone on to being a competitive power lifter great podcast
Mark Rippetoe is a funny bastard. Love the guy. Also, respect anyone who stuck with strength training as long as he has. He offers a real service to people who are trying to overcome physical challenges. And Mark seems like a pro-MAGA dude too. I tip a jug of milk to Starting Strength!
Water and Power: “they control most of the water and got all the power.” by TheAtomicSoul. Cool shirt. As for the free SS t-shirt, I wear a large. Haha.
Tried out the FFMI CALCULATOR. Normalized FFMI= 24.782. According to the website this is in the 95+ percentile and 24-25 is an elite strength athlete. I’ve been lifting less than 2 years and have a very hard time putting any validity to this. For the sake of the argument, I’ve only had a caliper for 3 weeks, but it’s very straightforward to use so I doubt it would skew too far one way or the other... I highly doubt that I’m exceptional here..
It's a good thing I have a self driving car because that women's soccer discussion was so damn funny I could not see from laughing so hard! Rip you are such a funny bastard... Thanks for the laughs and great show.
please have your guests get closer to the mike. If you set the volume for Rip you cant hear the guests (this is not the first one), if you set the volume for the guest Rip will blow you out of the room. Thank you.
I may have increased my calorie intake too much, i look 3 months pregnant. Almost all the weight gain goes to my belly real quick and a small portion goes to my muscle mass over a longer period of time. I’m ok with some belly but probably need to cut back just a bit
I actually discovered Rip and Starting Strength through Mike several years back when I got into training. Very grateful. I've listened to every podcast between these two guys and they only get better. Thanks to both you for what you do, being yourselves, and not giving a shit.
Why the full body workout vs the split training? Can strength be acquired efficiently via a split system? How do these lifts qualify for general strength adaption when they are specific movements? Thanks for your help.
Mr Rip, love your work and ty for sharing your knowledge on youtube. On the pronunciation of vegan, my opinion is it should be a hard 'g' because it's followed by 'a' (so like pronunciation of Las Vegas); and also a shirt 'e'....again, like Vegas... Replace 's' with 'n'.
Indeed, the internet has become like a planet-sized megaphone for barfing out the stupidest of the stupid shit that most people wouldn't dare to barf out before.
What is your argument against the leg press? I understand it's not as good as the squat, but trying to explain it to an untrained person is difficult because they see the really high weight as a benefit over the squat.
It's mostly connective tissue, water, and other components of fat cells. I go into the details here: legionathletics.com/how-to-build-muscle-naturally/
The vegan rage quickly faded due to their protein/carb/fat deficiency. The search continues for a proper supplement to add to their perfect diet that enables them energy and gumption.
vegan diet is not deficient in carbs. That's bullshit. Protein, Fats and some vitamins(Bs D) iron and some other nutrients sure, those can be lacking. But vegan diets being too low in carbs is just nonsense. You can easily get enough calories as a vegan
Vegan diet, especially whole food plant based (meaning no processed foods) actually skyrockets your energy and recovery (including your health). If you tried it, you'd know how misinformed you are.
Obviously, you haven't looked because many, including Ray Lewis and Terrell Suggs went vegan to slim down where they needed and had amazing seasons following.

Michael Matthews taught me how to diet down to a lower body fat percentage than I've ever been able to get to otherwise.

I Think reading books from bill pearl is the best option. Old school shit. SS is good to be strong but not to build quality size.
@@engineeringman3281 I'll look into it. I agree with you. Ss is only good for learning techniques. And they are effective
