I'm grateful for these videos. Rip's insanity is somehow keeping me sane.
He slays the jack wagons so we don't have to.
Also, strangely, he keeps me motivated to keep picking up heavy stuff in my decrepitude.
    Thanks ❤️ to all involved.
PS my bench just went from 35# to 405 while watching this.
PPS. I'm an irresponsible bar owner. My bars have rust on them because I irresponsibly took them to Michigan. Lesson learned. 😔

2 hours. I see what Rippetoe and his crew are doing. They are slowly exposing us to a gradually lengthier podcast, until we can handle 24 hours without having to go for a meal, snack, or bathroom break. A straight 24 hours of Rippetoe probably feels like 900 for a triple does on a good day: snappy, whippy, effortless, and lubricating for the hips and knees.
Excellent podcast, by the way. I like the subject. Bought a powerlifting bar as my second bar a few weeks ago, just because I appreciate good quality (both bars are close to 300 in cost, but the first one I bought years ago is more suitable for weightlifting). I'm so 'glad' of the earlier 'lockdown' in my country, because I pulled the trigger as soon as my funds allowed it and bought a power rack and plates, while before I was putting that cost out against the cost of going to a commercial gym, and the latter is much cheaper. During the lockdown, when gyms were closed, I was able to train illicitly in a Dutch gym I found somewhere. They taped over the windows and dimmed the music. We had to look out for fascist cops patrolling the neighborhood.
Gyms are open now, but when the dimwitted totalitarians in government come up with more stupid measures, like closing gyms again, I'm prepared. Deadlift platform coming in today.
A few days ago, when I was in a commercial gym I'm a member of still, they had up this moronic sign that demanded we all wear a mask when entering and going to our place to train, where we are allowed to remove said mask, and then we have to don the mask again when we move to and fro places or leave the gym. I rolled my eyes at this nonsense and asked the owner what this is about. It's orders from the government, he said. He's not going to police what we're doing, but there are inspections coming from the government, he warned. So I didn't wear a mask and of course didn't have one on me, and there's nothing that's going to make me wear a mask when squatting or whatever, which I assume is up next. The government knows no bounds of reason and has zero respect for common sense and personal liberties, or health for that matter. This is all a power grab, to make people obedient and give up more of the liberties braver men and women fought for many years ago. I would like to see these fascist cops or whatever pigs show up and order people to wear a mask. They're probably a bunch of pencil-necked bootlickers who can't find an honest vocation in life, so they bully others into submission, backed by the might of the government.
By now, going to the commercial gym feels increasingly less fun. They have some equipment I don't have, which is still a reason for me to go there. If there's even one more round of mandatory closing of gyms, I suspect many will disappear permanently. I kept paying my membership during the first lockdown, but I won't next time around. This is not to spite the gym owner, but more like a nod to him to stand up and don't go along with these tyrannical government mandates. After all, when you're faced with losing everything or possibly losing everything while making a stand, I know which one I'd choose. There will be a ripple effect of others also following the lead. Then again, people are sheep. They're waiting around to be culled. I guess most will pull down their own trousers demanding to be jabbed in their saggy ass 'to get back to normal again'. Bending over to get back your freedom doesn't sound right to me. Okay, maybe you have to roll up your sleeve and be jabbed there, but it's the same thing. This just reminds me of Benny Hill's skit about flu vaccinations. Hahahahah. Whoops, now I mentioned the V word and my comment will be banned by Susan's minions.

Had my bench wreck recently... I was a dope and had set my flat bench a couple inches too far up. Unracked the weight (Duffalo) for a heavy set of 5, on the 4th rep, got sloppy and clanked right into the j-cups, weight fell, caught it just below chest, then pressed it back up... by some grace of God.

I bought an incredibly cheap safety squat bar online (bad shoulders). It was an assembly-required delivery (bolts). I used to take it to my gym and leave with it. They told me I could leave it there if I didn't mind other people using it. I didn't have any problem with other people using it except for the fact that the thing was a death trap. The "2 inch" sleeves are on the small end of out-of-spec; unless you use those boa clamps or the old school bolt-down collars, you can slide collars right on and off, fastened. The sleeves were also short, which increased the chances of plates sliding completely off. We all know what happens when plates fall off of one side of the bar; imagine that happening with your head stuck in a safety bar. It never happened to me but I would actually know how to deal with it if plates did slide off one side, but some schmo who doesn't really have a clue can get themselves really hurt with that thing. I never left it at the gym.

One thing to mention regarding the cost of equipment is that it will retain some value. Buy a quality used bar and plates for $1,000 and in ten years it's worth $1,200 after inflation so you really didn't spend anything for a decade of entertainment and fitness.

I used to do crossfit years ago (first time I ever got introduced to the concept of training with a barbell). That was in Brazil and barbells are not easy to come across over there. The gym, in the attempt to save up, had bars that were secured with a bolts. I remember those things had to be tightened up every couple of weeks, or the sleeves would just fall off.

Since I was called a dumf... and a hater, I have to take a stand now: my comment was expressly respectful. If I was wrong on the subject matter, please explain: why is a flexed spine in a 405 deadlift bad, while a remarkably extended spine in a 405 overhead press would not be?
I am trying to apply what I have learned from your books and videos, which I hold in high esteem.

    • @LTPottenger
      @LTPottenger 3 ปีที่แล้ว

He doesn't have a flexed spine, he keeps it neutral it is just that is body is tilted. This is the most natural way you could load your spine and anyone who's ever carried a load has done it. Continental press is far better than the french press, you can actually train it while the french press is just bs for showing off. However you can do much more weight on a seated press than either one and get a more natural line of motion so it is kind of retarded to do any form of barbell press that being the case. If you can do more weight and it's more trainable it's a better lift. And you are not bobbing your spine around while putting your shoulders under tension which is an accident waiting to happen. For that matter BNP is also a better lift.

Living in a humid region of Japan, I do think that barbell coating makes a difference. Cerakote and stainless steel are very useful for bar maintenance.
I wouldn't want to own a gym with raw steel equipment there. Rust accumulation would be so fast it would be a pain in the ass to maintain. I've seen that even with the average coating of BULL and Ivanko bars here.
    So adapt to your climate.

Hey there uncle Rippie, I wanted to ask a couple of questions.
Ever since starting the program I gave myself to eat like there was no tomorrow, I want to know what would you say is "too much". I eat A LOT, I'm 5'11, 200 pounds. I'm one of those "skinny fat" people, I look like one of those aliens addicted to coffee in the Men In Black Movies. I don't mind too much since I just started the program(5 months).
I'm concerned I might be going overboard and just using this as an excuse for excess.
In my defense, everything I eat I cook, I do not eat sugar, junk food or sodas. I eat mostly meat with some kind of salad, fruit salad or bacon and 6 eggs or coffee with sandwiches for breakfast.

I pretty much doubt that bar manufacturers are correcting the straightness of the stock. For one that would be terribly inefficient, that's why you buy stock to specifications. Second, IMO this is pretty much impossible because bars made of spring steel which is really hard to deform permanently (this is.pretty much the point of that material).
Also the knurling is not the product of edging (whatever that is) or cutting as.proposed in the video it's being _rolled_ into the material, typically using a lathe.

    hate to do this to ya Rip, BUT - why bother with 45 pound plate if a 35 + 10 makes 45 ? here. i did the math for you on rogues website. 420 total pounds with 6 x 45's + 4 X 25's + 4 X 10's + 2 x 5's is $982 (Canadian) HOWEVER if you buy 420 pounds by 6 X 35's + 6 X 25's + 6 X 10's you would pay $942 (Canadian) which is a savings of $40 bucks!

I don’t really get the comparison between the press argument and the steroid argument. I think it’s pretty obvious that, especially in my personal experience, you can be on sufficient enough drugs, train like actual dogshit, and make huge gains with minimal effort.
I don’t think anyone actually believes you can hop on gear and suddenly be a world champion.
Like one of the previous episodes someone remarked about Coleman and steroids. I would bet you a thousand dollars right now Coleman wouldn’t be half the size he was if it wasn’t for the drugs. HOWEVER, the drugs PLUS the training created the man.

So ab work is bad according to Rip because you're wiggling your spine around but extending your back till you're parallel to the floor under load is just fine.....Furthermore from wikipedia "The International Weightlifting Federation removed the clean and press after the 1972 Olympics due to difficulty in judging form. The press portion of the lift had evolved from an upright, rigid body movement that primarily tested shoulder strength to a "layback" movement that utilized the larger muscles of the legs, hips, and torso, enabling the lifter to "cheat" to lift more weight. "The urge to win by any means, combined with lax enforcement of rules" resulted in its removal from the Olympic weightlifting program." So exactly what's happening here with Starting strength. NO IT WAS THE RUSSIANS!
