  • In 1986 Russell Mulcahy's film about immortals fighting in the gathering flopped a bit at the box office. But Sean Connery, Christopher Lambert and Clancy Brown prove this Rock/Metal Queen music video epic is worth anyone's time.

I've known Clancy Brown as a voice actor before I would see examples of his live-action work (such as "Highlander" and "The Shawshank Redemption"). He's not only the voice of Mr. Krabs, but also Lex Luthor from the DCAU, the Dark Dragon from "American Dragon: Jake Long," Rhino from "The Spectacular Spider-Man,” Hakon and Wolf from "Gargoyles," just to name a few.

I absolutely LOVE the Highlander film, but I'll admit that the theatrical version was lacking. My favourite version of the film is easily the Director's Cut which gave us additional scenes, including how he met the woman he works with. It's great seeing how everything tied together.

I fcking LOVE Highlander. 100% its because I literally grew up as a kid watching this movie and the tv show, but I will defend this film in a real Gathering. all the over-the-top moments with the Kurgan were perfect characterization. He's not evil for the sake of just being evil. Whereas Conner is consumed by the despair of being immortal, Kurgan relishes the chaos and entropy of it. Conner was afraid to live because his life was a curse, Kurgan made his life a curse on others. as much as i enjoyed it, i will admit the france dual scene was unnecessary lol
to this day, the Who Wants to Live Forever scene gets tears out of me. I have Princes of the Universe on my work playlist (linecook) and everytime it comes on, I either give the kitchen a goddamn performance, or skip it because I cant give the song the attention it deserves

i've seen the series at least a couple of times (many episodes more then like 6 times) and it is definitely the best follow up to the original film, and i think it demonstrates the two things that The Highlander (the franchise) is best at: Cool Action and Romance (both the good and the loss), both set to amazing music... essentially all of them are great warriors both blessed and cursed with this life
and yes, the cut aways due run the range from cool and brutal, to tragic, to goofy (in the film).... but in the series, it really helps show what an Immortal truly is, imagine what you would be if you lived through all the best and worst moments of your current life, and other lives and remembered it all (then throw in being born in a more brutal and primitive age that no longer exists)...where you may be the same but literally everything else if different

  • @DarrenJSeeley
    @DarrenJSeeley 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

You could do a follow up video of what *could* have been Highlander, regarding Gregory Widen's earlier drafts and/or why some of the finished film is a bit disjointed. The "missing scenes" which had footage that was damaged by a fire so they couldn't be used, most notably the immortal Kurgan killed offscreen (Kurgan hears the report over the radio I Knew his name") . Or even the (better) international cut of the film which had the zoo scene with Kurgan stalking Connor and Brenda) and a backstory on Racheal, Connor's secretary, where Connor saved her from the Nazis during WWII..

Klayton have you saw Scream (2022)? Are you even a fan of the franchise? I would love to see you do a video on the Scream Franchise (if you’re a fan) because being a fan of the original Jurassic Park Trilogy (as well as the new one).
I always felt that the Scream Franchise and the Jurassic Franchise had some interesting parallels to each other as far as film reception goes.
    Jurassic Park/Scream - Original/Masterpiece
    TLW/Scream 2 - Great Sequel
Jurassic Park 3/Scream 3 - everyone hated it
    JW/Scream 4 - either loved it/hated it
The only thing that disrupts my parallel theory is how terrible Scream 4 did at the box office. Which ruined plans of starting a new trilogy.
But I love Scream and would honestly love to hear you do a review/theorize on it. Roger L. Jackson’s voice is epic btw. He absolutely nails it every time.

The movie itself was pretty much what was being released at the time, so the content wasn't the problem, it was the bizarre advertising in the US that's at fault. It failed in the US because of the bland lacklustre promotion of the movie by the studio. Whereas the UK and European movie posters had a fancy artistic action picture, the US ones simply had a black and white picture of Lambert's face.

And I can only say without any kind of complaint, is that Highlander could be easily remade right now to make it a larger serious then fast and the furious could’ve ever realized to begin with. Just the amount of law in past information from the original highlander movie to the futuristic gathering and win it went back a few decades to the final dimension and all the way into all the other lore when it comes to the television show. With all that information and knowledge about the immortals fighting each other till there’s one left, this could be either a very Great trilogy that turns into a six movie show that could end up being a giant franchise with using all the characters before and all the information that we know with the movies in the television show blended together could make it simply a six movie anthology that would make it one of the greatest movies of all time if it was done right, by the right Director, and by the right amount of screen writers who know how to how to actually write stories to begin with. And it’s not just about being immortal, but the actual premise should be that the greatest sacrifice on fighting each other to become the one?
Does that person become a god at that point? Or does something else happen that could be Doomsday to the world.
I would love them to rehash Highlander and honestly use science fiction directors more like Neil b, what he tried to do for the change for a new aliens three project which have been different than the actual aliens three that we got. I can’t see his name properly without it making them look stupid as they say, but we know who were all talking about who knows how to do science fiction. And if you all were to see the difference between what happened over the last 30 years with Highlander, that he had someone like Neil B, and even myself working as a writer to create actual scenery, action and honestly good plot lines, this franchise would make more money combined as a six movie anthology, then even fast and the furious could ever do with three movies.
Anyways, highlander is one of the greatest shows of an older generation that should wash it as many times as you can. Before it’s totally forgotten about.
Between the songs that they made for the show, and everything else in between I cannot say nothing more than to keep on enjoying watching all of it because it has so much background lore, that could play into the actual future of the films to make it even a better film or anthology Which they could’ve honestly use the television show as another platform to create a six movie anthology that would make billions of dollars just because the fact that if you did it the right way, you would not need any of the original actors. You just need people who are 100% committed in the role, and when they play that part or 150% involved in that character when it comes to action and drama.
Debt also, that you have a protagonist that will do everything they can especially since they have a different form of sword fighting with the actual hero which could honestly make this re-Hash have a movie stand out when you have the right people to direct it, the right people to write the script, the right people to actually choreograph the actual fights no matter if it takes six months plus, would be a lot better than even watching Star Wars episode two or three when it comes to having, Darth Vader versus Obi-Wan Kenobi during the lava scene.
All that I am saying is, if anyone wanted to adventure into investing in that kind of movie, it will be more than successful if it is 100% original from the original story, but also is based off of Duncan MacLeod to begin with, and then use the entire history between back then and now and into the future that honestly pivots each character who has fought for centuries to finally have that very ending battle to begin with. They have never done that in the Highlander series other than the TV series which I don’t count. But if you did it right, Duncan MacLeod would be the last model who wins everything, but then you would have to question what is the final price?
And if you keep on playing on that ideology that even the immortals are confused about what the price is, it gives a greater question out there to even humanity, that what if the greater prize is either extinction, or no different than being Jesus when it comes to removing the sins from the earth. We would not really know the truth at all. But I think that making a movie that stands by itself with good writers, good directors, and also very good actors that are not even greatly known in anything, would be better for the franchise which would be no different than the original Star Wars community with Luke Skywalker, princess Leia, the wookiee, R2 D2, C-3PO, but also mainly, Han Solo.
The fact is, you don’t need popular people from any kind of franchise to start out a new franchise in a different direction that could honestly either make or break a movie. And if you put the right amount of budgeting into it, you don’t need to spend billions of dollars in making an extravagant movie for the very first time. The best thing to do is to introduce the characters to begin with and the first movie that sets the ground rules, but also plays a role in making sure that these characters are cared about to begin with. And then when it comes to the sequel you care more about the special effects but I also still care about the characters developing a relationship between each other. If you can’t do that with Highlander, you could never do that with Star Wars for the prequel‘s and the sequels. Obviously the sequels of Star Wars has failed miserably to begin with. They were involved with the George Lucas, it just like Crystal skull failed miserably as being Indiana Jones forth movie.
My point with all this is, you don’t try to remake your own movies to begin with when you already made gold from the very first three movies that ended the trilogy to begin with. And the only way to make a sequel after you ended a trilogy of three movies that were great to begin with like Indiana Jones, you have to realize that without introducing new characters that respect the old ones they’ll only be crapped on and not only forgotten about but miss used as a major plot point like in Crystal skull that made me vomited just watching it at home. I never went to the theaters to watch that movie because I had the feeling that it was a Cash grab like everything else.
The only way to make good movie that you want to reboot to begin with, is to make sure you hire actors and actresses that know exactly what they’re doing to begin with. And it shouldn’t matter about their skin color or what not, but if you’re going to have someone like Duncan MacLeod that person Hass to be a white guy no matter what. And that’s why they will never reboot the series or even try to do anything to do justice that the 80s movies did perfectly well to begin with. We live in such a toxic climate when it comes to Hollywood, that even if I use my own personal ideas and stories, they would completely change every single concept character that I have personally designed for the character to deal with the problems they deal with, would not only destroy the franchise within the first 10 minutes, it would be no different than adding jar Jar Binks in the Phantom Menace.
And like I said before, if you wanna make a great movie, with good characters and actual people who care about doing their own performance which should not only play out as just a regular story, but invest their entire heart into that story, will not only make that story even better, it will at last the age of time considering that a lot of movies I’ve seen over the last few years have been more than 20 to 40 years old at this point.
Just like one of the most graphic and also almost close to being rated R for Disney what is the movie Dragon slayer made in 1981. That was one of the greatest dragon killing movies I’ve ever seen in my entire wife. I saw it as a kid and it totally threw me through the arena and made me realize that this is one of the scariest drag movies I’ve ever seen. I still love it to this day no matter what. And yet after seeing that movie, my grandfather allowed me to rent a movie which was called aliens by James Cameron! Which I believe is one of the best alien movies I’ve ever seen in my life!
I saw that movie when I was seven years old! And that movie came out in 1986 so you should know how old I am. At this point. So me stating this right now I have seen so many different science-fiction movies and so many different other movies in my entire life whether or not they were reruns and still made for TV that silence their voices when they came to swearing, like total recall or a movie just as simple as

Nah... It's got its devoted fans, but I wouldn't put it under cult classic.
I would go as far to say the series was better than the movies. At least it had better acting and story.

I don't know if it was just me, but I found a weird sexual undercurrent between Ramirez and Connor. Also, I think the best Highlander film is Highlander the search for venegance.

You lost me when you said this movie wasn't as good as some rehashed jurassic trash...for shame. But not unexpected...

Jurassic World better than Highlander? What drugs are you on?

The movie lost me at the beginning, when the antagonist needlessly does flips through the parking garage. It’s a guilty pleasure, but as a kid, I abided the movie just because I liked the show. Lambert can’t act his way out of a paper bag, and being legally blind, his blank gaze always made me laugh.

Honestly, Highlander really wasn't that good. I feel like it just got elevated because the sequels were just so terrible.

This goon thinks Jurassic World is better than Highlander. Instantly loses all credibility

I saw Highlander in the theater. The previews were great, but I was disappointed by the movie. I did like most of the scenes with Lambert, Connery and Hart, but I didn't like Brown's character at all. Clancy plays a screaming psycho with absolutely no interesting qualities. By the time they reach the final confrontation, I was just sick of him.
Highlander could have been so much better.

Don't care... love the first one. It's a great gem from the 80s.
