- Marulas are also great treats for us humans… eaten when ripe as is or as a jam or in dishes. Marulas are high in vitamin C and provide a source of energy.
The African marula tree (Sclerocarya birrea) is a tree of great beauty and value. The fruit, bark and leaves are eaten by animal and man alike both for nutrition and for their medicinal properties. The fruit is consumed in vast amounts between December and March by many animals, such as the African elephant, and the seeds are eaten and ‘saved for later’ by rodents, both of whom repay the annual feast by spreading the seeds far and wide. The bark of the marula tree - also known as the elephant tree - contains helpful antihistamines… It has been a traditional African healing practice to steep the bark in hot water and inhale the steam, to take advantage of these allergy-relieving properties, for thousands of years before the western world “discovered” antihistamines.

The truth is that the fermented marulas can make the elephants drunk too🤣
Am cracking up seeing one of the elephants coming up behind Owen as he breaks open the marula! 😂
I forget how good their sense of smell is.
Sweet video, guys.
Merci 🫒

😅😅😅
I saw that lil sneak peek as well
I wondered if the ele would relieve Owen of his Marula sample😂
So interesting! Thank you, Owen!❤🐘
we thank you very much dear Carer Owen for all these explanations and demonstration about this marula fruit which seems very good ! and I understand why the herd is so greedy of these fruit ! I watch so many on the ground !! delicious snack !! they all like Marula !!! It will be later for baby love !!! Thank you Adine ! Owen ‘ all of you ! have a good time 👍🏼💕☘️
Absolute classic thank you, explaining the squirrels and the nut, and here comes an Elephant to see what's going on very good.
Thank you 🕊🇺🇲💕
That was so interesting thank you
I would gladly spend my time gathering the fruit for the herd. I'd love to taste one! I'm so happy they can enjoy this treat. Like pudding inside. Such a luscious looking fruit. Squirrels are universal I guess.
Thank you Owen that was very interesting 😊
It looks delicious Owen. Watching from grey skies monday morning in Ireland and wishing I was there in your wonderful country of warmth and sunsets. You are cheering us up for the week ahead. You are all cool guys there❤
Owen thank you for the tutorial on marulas. You cracked me up when you said no one under the age of 18/21 not to drink it as you can get drunk 😂😂.
It was funny to see you peeling that marulas and one of the elephants 🐘 came right in behind you. Such a great sense of smell these gentle giants have.
The elephants 🐘 are certainly in their happy place with all of the marulas on the ground.
I love squirrels. I have several living in my squirrel houses we out up. I feed them all the time. Owen it was very interesting about how you said they take out the seed to eat it.
Thank you Owen ❤️🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘❤️
@@vivianaiacomelli3080 good afternoon Viviana. I can say the same thing about Italian. I have to use google translate to read your replies. That is why sometimes I am delayed responding. I have to get my old phone out and hover over your reply to read it in English. I hope you have a beautiful day dear Vivianaia.🌹🌹❤️🐘🐘❤️
I love that you feed the squirrels. ❤ If you ever run out of nuts, you can use peanut butter. They love it! Just make sure they have some water around. I used to feed the squirrels from my roof. It was easy to step out on from a bedroom window. Anyway, I used to put peanut butter out for them & they LOVED it. (Birds do too.) It's rather amusing to watch them pack it in their mouth, but they sure do love the stuff. Natural P.B. would be better for them than the kind with sugar in it, but they'll eat any kind you give them.
@@dorothywestcott2408I've often wondered why TH-cam automatically offers translation on some comments, but not on others. 🤔 I like it - & I wish they offered it on all of them. I hope you have a good day/evening wherever you are in this world.🌎
@@GuantanamoBayBarbie3 I actually have 2 phones one is the one I play and watch TH-cam. When a person from Italy replies I go to Google translate and hover over her reply and it will translate into English. Using my other phone. First I had to figure out what language it was...lol
I am from Florida USA
❤❤Merci beaucoup Owen, on arrive 😋😋😋❤❤❤
Thank you, Owen, for that information. I thought there would be a slight theft coming over your shoulder 😅😅😅
Truly a treat for everyone. So cool to see the elephant reach the high branch too.
Owen, you have invented the newest lodge flavor: Marula Jabu Gin ! Thank you for the tutorial 😊❤
Thanks Owen! That looked yummy! This is going on my bucket list. To stay at the Lodge and try the Marula drink. And of course see the elephants. Thanks again Owen and Adine. Take care 💜🐘💙🙏🌞🤗
Look for Amarula in your local bottle store (liquor store), in the liqueur section. Absolutely delicious poured over ice cream too.

Thank you 💜
You will recognize Sebakwe on the label too 😉

Hi Alison, 🐘
Thank you. I'll have to pick some up and try it! I like Kahlúa rum and coffee liqueur and Galliano liqueur. This sounds even better. I don't drink that often being 71 years old now. But occasionally might be a nice treat! 😏
Thanks again.🤗
Take care 💜🐘💙
Deb
@@alison__16Can we buy it in The US? Asking for a friend lol 🙄
All our Ellies are crazy about Marula In Europe we are drinking the marula liqueur At the begining there was Sebakwe's picture but now it is a stylized Elephant which looks very much like Sebakwe Hoping they still give him royalties 😅 Thank You Owen for the explanation Have a great week Ellies and Humans
Marula moonshine lessons!😂 Love you Owen❤️✌🏻
Ive bought marula oil from a company called African Botanics before and although its pricey it IS very good for the skin. I wish we had marula fruit in Australia!
Thank you!
Thank you Owen never have taste it now im very curious 😉🤗😋
Delicious marula! Thank you for all those interesting details 😊
❤️Love ❤️
🐘worden ook dronken van toch!?😜🙃😩😨😨😨😰
😂
Owen, thank you. That was informative! I thought the fruit was eaten rather than just the juice drank. I love learning new things. I hope after the alcohol is made that they save the seeds and replant them. I'm seeing a lot of beauty products coming out with marula in it also. I suppose the ellie dung also helps replant the seeds in the wild! More marula trees for the ellies.
Lo spero anch'io, così nasceranno tante piante di marula!
I didnt know it was edible. Wonder how it taste like❤
Super nice! I made a lovely jelly for toast and extract for fruit juice.
very interesting ,
How kind and sweet of Carer Owen to show us the inside of the marula fruit🙏🏼❤️.
Thanks, Owen 🌹
We want marula's drink too.😂
Thank you, you learn something new every day , plus ,,,, thanks for taking care of the elephants. They truly need the help of H.E.R.D.
The look scrumptious. Waiting for you to eat the whole thing! Surprised Khanyisa didn't pop her trunk over your shoulder and pinch it!
I would love to try the marula fruit. Thank you Owen for the teach-in session. Now I know why elephants love the marula fruit. It provides a tasty snack and is a thirst quencher. ❤🐘♥️
Oooo, this takes me back to my younger days. I love marulas, even better when made into a liqueur 😋
That was very interesting Owen! I would love to try one, but not the alcohol drink,,,,the Elephant’s sure like it 🐘🐘🐘🐘
You have a very beautiful ellie model in your background there, Owen. I am so happy to see Timisa and the other ellies enjoying their favorite snack. Thank you, Owen, Adine, and all of HERD for these informative and beautiful videos.❤🐘❤
Looks like this tree provides much to many. Mother Nature provides, and we are thankful.
Thank you Owen for teaching us about the Marula.🤗💖🐘
Good afternoon the fruit looks yummy the Ellie’s are enjoying them

I remember that very old video clip of wild animals in the jungle getting drunk after gorging themselves with Marula fruit all day and all night long!

💞💞🌟🌟Thanks, that's very cool, Owen. The elephants, have let you into their Marula, delicacy secrets and now they eat and watch you create all sorts of cocktails, raw, neat or with a little ice.🍈🍈🍃🍃🦏🦏🍸🍈🐘🐘🍈🍈🐿 Mmmmmmmmm!🎇🎇💕💕
Thank you Owen !!
Thank you Owen for an EXCELLENT Marula Demonstration! 🤩🥳🤩 You made the presentation so well that now I’m hungry for a marula!!! 🙂🥰🤩
Interesting. Thank you! 👍 ❤
Hi Owen...thank you for sharing with us. The fruit looks like a guava on the outside, but a lychee on the inside. Owen, I think that was an Elly photobomb and I'd love to try the marula drink. 💕🦣🦣
Thanks Owen, we appreciate you all.
Great tutorial Owen! Made my mouth water, watching that, and I have had the marula drink. It’s quite tasty. Thanks for the great demonstration 👍🥰🐘
Many thanks Owen. Very informative.

Thanks for the great video of the great care giver Owen I wonder how these fruits taste 😊good afternoon from Michigan USA 😊
Do the elephants get a little tipsy on the Marulas?😂
Lovely info about the fruit.
Thank you Owen.
❤🐘❤🐘❤🐘❤🐘❤
Thank you, Owen! I wish I could drink the juicy too!! It looked delicious. ❤
Thanks, Owen! Cleared up mabt questions regarding this fruit.
Gracias Cuidador Owen, explicando acerca de ésta clase de fruta que es agradable por su sabor para los humanos,y qué decir para los elefantes es un manjar exquisito cuando llega la cosecha.🙏
You're so funny 😁 cute smile 😊❤
Very interesting! Thank you for sharing this!🙏
Owen seems like a nice gentleman. Hello to all HERDs carers! Thank you for all you do for these magnificent creatures. We love you! ❤️🙂❤ ❤🐘x17❤️
Can anyone tell me how many carers there are in total?
I look this way when eating the smarties.
I so enjoy these kinds of videos
Interesting, thank you Owen marula "lesson" 😊❣. I ever have tasted, but sounds very delicious 😋🍈🍈.
One of the Ellies creeping up on Owen when he was peeling the marula. He or she was on it.😊😊
😂 Tell the elephants no eating fermented marula under 21 too.😂.
I learn so much from you all! I like Owen’s accent. Good to know about the fermented Marula drink! 😁😂❣️. I hope to visit someday and enjoy this fruit…,and see the Ellies. ❣️
If I remember correctly, this is the time that Mambo likes to sneak away to eat marula. Good luck!
Well done!
Thank Owen!🇧🇷🇧🇷
Thank you Edwin very much for a very informative Marula fruit❤❤❤😊😊😊
Excellent video. I was wondering about marulas. They sound delicious. 💜💜💜🐘
Lovely presentation.. 💚🐘
Mr Owen
Thank you for the marula fruit eating process😊
Thanks so much for all the info you share🥰 I was curious about the marula and reading about it isn’t as informative as having a video demo. Thanks Owen! 💜🐘💜🐘💜
Thank you Owen, next time I see Marulas I'm going to have a go now that I know how to soften them and peel them. We occasionally see them in the shops here, but I've never bought them because I had no idea what to do with them
Very interesting
Never tried one of these but I love the liqueur that is made from them! All hail Amarula Cream.
3:25 It didn't take long for someone to come and investigate 😂😂
Thanks Owen😁. I definitely want to try that one day
Just so beauitfl 🎉😂😂😂❤
Like the scene from *Animals Are Beautiful People* with the fermented marulas.
My mouth is watering. Haven't had a maroela in years.
Looks delicious. Thank you for the information
Thank you for the lesson, Owen! This is a “something for everyone” food! Are the trees easily grown?
Yummy!!!❤❤❤❤ Thank you!
Owen you like a pro at this 😊😊😊
What happens when it ferments?
It's freaky time.
It becomes alcohol, much like fermented grapes make wine, and apples make cider. Funniest thing is seeing a troupe of baboons who have eaten too many fermented marulas 😂😂😂
It's a potent alcoholic drink in the villages of South Africa and Zimbabwe 😅
FUN happens as long as the person drinking the juice is responsible. 😂😂
🐘❤️🐘❤️
Oh, I’ll be buying Marina oil for my skin lotions. Thank you for showing us the Marula fruit!
💕
❤❤❤❤
Marulas remind me of Quenepas in Puerto Rico.
After the first hike to sit with Gorrilla's in Uganda we returned to celebrate with a glass of Amarula! It is a cream liqueur made from the marula fruit. It is delectable!!!!!!! I brought back many bottles, then years later it started being sold in the USA!!!!!!!!!!!! I was thrilled.
So folks head to your local shop and get some Amarula; the Taste of Africa!
You probably already know this, but in case not, Sebakwe is the elephant on the bottle and appears on the advertising posters and magazine ads for the drink.
@@alison__16 Exciting! I did not know that. I have recently learned of this channel. I have 2 metal holiday gift canisters, which I use to store spaghetti in the pantry, so I get to enjoy them. Thanks.
Muy interesante !!!!
Thanks...I love marula oils ....it's good for face sensitive skin❤
It looks so delicious I would love to taste one
Wonderful video. Thank you!
Thank you mister. My mouth watered when I saw you open the marula and drink the juice. Is this fruit tart or sweet ?
😂❤thank you 😊
That was so cute from Owen.❤❤ Do the ellies eat the fruit when it gets fermented? I've seen a few videos of different animals that eat the fermented fruit and they get VERY tipsy. The monkeys are sooooo funny.😂😂 Probably get a huge babalas from eating too much.😂😂😂
