Good video. Although I'm new to the truffle thing I'm not new to hunting dogs. My preference for labs,black labs in particular, the English hunting variety. Suits me very well. Their ability to stay focused on their tasks is wonderful. Like you noted they won't go to far afield staying in close range ( a wonderful aspect when bird hunting making it less likely to prematurely kick up birds out of range of shotguns) works for me. Plus I have never met a single breed that wants to please their owner more then the lab.The forests of western Washington are heavily brushed so you don't need a dog with lots of range possibilities. But in some large open areas it might be nice to include a long legged pointer to cover ground more effectively. You haven't mentioned this in any of the videos I have watched yet but I believe it needs to be discussed, especially for folks who are new to hunting breed dogs and how to effectively hunt them. Scent moves in the air. It's important to use that to help your dog. If hunting on any slope in say the early morning the airflow will be moving downhill while the air is cool. To best utilize this start at the bottom of the slope so your dog can best pickup the scent and work towards it. This will make things much easier for your dog. And much more effective. As the day warms up the air flow will change and start to go up. Once that happens you should consider working from top down. You can truly utilize this by walking trails or roads that are running level above or below a area you wish to check out. This makes it easier for both the dog and hunter. When the dog picks up scent then you both leave level ground to where the scent is coming from. In this way you can cover a immense amount of land very effectively. This would be most effective for new hunters or when checking out possible new areas. Using a topographical map during the off season for old forests roads that parallel the hillsides would be time well spent. Figure out where you need to be in advance to best utilize the direction of air flows would be wise. As a deer & Elk hunter I utilize this because I don't want them to smell me. To use this to help you and your dog to not have to walk up and down the hill needlessly only makes sense. After all, the truffles are not moving around and in effect they WANT to be found. Wow, thanks Victor for this really useful information and a great topic for a future video. We are off season at the moment and are using this time to scout for potential black truffle locations so your suggestions are bang on point!. Today I have taken some time off to make a video about what scouting involves,. Reading your comment has made me realize how much more I have to learn! When we hunt, we will usually go in pairs and we select which dogs we take depending on the location. truffle type etc. We have 7 dogs to choose from, 2 are close range, 3 medium and then we have a German wirehaired pointer and an Italian bracch pointer for covering distances.....and do they cover some distance!! Also the GWP will find truffles, dig them up and bring them back in her mouth.

As a hunter I always felt scouting a area is important. And getting the dogs familiar with the area is definitely a plus. Looking forward to seeing your next video.

I have a French bulldog and I want to know if I can train him to hunt for truffles he listens very well to me and stays close by his breed is actually for ratting so he has a natural hunting skills in his DNA already I was just wondering if he would be a good candidate

I was wondering if belgian malinois (20 months old) could be suitable for truffle hunting? He is already trained to find hidden ball around the yard. Is that going to be helpful for truffle training? Thank you!
The Malinois, as you will know. is highly trainable - a really smart dog. 20 months generally speaking is old to start truffle training if you want a dog which is professional level. However you can teach dogs of any age to sniff out truffles as a hobby . And there are always exceptions, our best truffle dog was over 2 years when she first learnt. As you have already been involved with training your dog, chances are you will do really well with truffling I hope so! Let us know how you get on!

my dog is a Labrador. I've started training him on the weekends the past 2 months and even though he is 7 years old he's caught on pretty well. he does tend to tire himself out pretty quickly and is super hyper and impatient. if he doesn't fins the fake truffle within a few minutes he will turn back to me. if he's tired he will even pass right by the truffle while sniffing at the ground, any suggestions to strengthen these weaknesses? I haven't take him out into the field yet.
Are you feeding him before you do these exercises?

@@nathanbluto1383 We always feed the dogs after the training, They will be more focused and work harder for their treats when they have not had their first meal of the day Try this to start with and let me know if it makes a difference
How do poodle mixes do with truffle hunting?
Great question! Although there are some breeds which are really well suited to truffle hunting, like the lagotto which has been selectively bred for the purpose, ultimately it is the individual dog's temperament which plays the biggest role. All breeds can hunt truffles but if the dog is smart, enjoys learning and is fairly energetic then she will do fine. Good luck
