  • A real time ride on the interstate loop around Raleigh known as the Capital Beltline. It is also referred to as the Raleigh Beltline and Cliff Benson Beltline. Also included along this segment is a short portion of the newly signed Interstate 87 (I-87) in North Carolina, an interstate that will in the future run from Raleigh to Norfolk, Virginia.

    From Wikipedia:
Interstate 440 (I-440), also known as the Raleigh Beltline, the Cliff Benson Beltline, or locally as just The Beltline, is an Interstate Highway in the US state of North Carolina. I-440 is a 16.4-mile-long (26.4 km) partial beltway that nearly encircles central Raleigh. I-440 begins in west Raleigh at an interchange with I-40, as a continuation of US Highway 64 (US 64)/US 1 and traverses a primarily residential area in west Raleigh. The freeway makes a turn toward the east, crossing US 70, Six Forks Road, and Wake Forest Road. US 1 branches north off of I-440 at Capital Boulevard (US 401), becoming US 401/US 1. I-440 turns toward the southeast and follows a brief concurrency with US 64 Business before intersecting I-87/US 64/US 264. US 64 is concurrent with I-440 along the remainder of the road's southwesterly routing. Exit 16 is the last exit on I-440, where I-440 splits to become I-40 East and West.
The Raleigh Beltline was formed from a number of highway segments, the earliest of which had been in place since 1959. The loop was completed in 1984 under multiple route designations. To avoid confusion along the beltline, I-440 was routed along the entirety of the beltline and shared a concurrency with its parent, Interstate 40, along the loop's southern segment (Tom Bradshaw Freeway). In 2008, the I-440 designation was removed from the section of I-40/US 64 in southeast Raleigh. The highway's original "inner" and "outer" designations were also removed and replaced with compass directions (e.g. east/west). The easternmost two miles of the I-440 was rebuilt in 2015 as part of the larger widening project along I-40 in South Raleigh, while the westernmost four miles, the oldest segment and one which is not up to Interstate standards, is currently undergoing widening and upgrading and is scheduled to be complete by 2023.

I'm glad that the Western Part of 440 from Crossroads to Wade Avenue is being constructed new bridges and added lanes it's for the best and the traffic flow better

Yeah I'm surprised it took so long for them to finally get started on that. It's much needed. That section of 440 kind of looks like 277 in Charlotte with the old style interchanges..

@@MileageMikeTravels The infrastructure needs of a state with a very spread-out population are tremendous, and NCDOT tries to be fair in allocating funding in all 100 counties. That is why the old section on the Beltline has waited patiently to be improved.

I have a lot of nostalgia for Raleigh/Car and Durham. I lived there for 15 year while I was NC State and after I graduated and before I moved to Berlin. Your videos are like ASMR for drivers. I can watch without being aggressed! lol BTW, how do you just be driving with no music! You would be hearing me singing all in the video! lol Mike, do your car have 1,000,000 miles on it?

Thanks for the nice ride !! I live in eastern NC in Greenville actually and have been on 40 lots of times but When I have to go to Chapel Hill I take I-540 which is 25 miles and get on I-40 west at the RDU exit where 540 ends. I’ve been on the belt line but since 540 was opened ,I’d prefer that route since traffic is lighter than on 440. Are they widening 440? Just curious as to when they’re going to finish 540 completely around 40 and Raleigh? Any clues?

Yeah the portion of 440 around Wade Ave. is being widened and rebuilt finally. The 540 from the current end to I-40 is estimated to be completed as early as 2023. No word yet on the last part back to US 64/264.

Compared to Phoenix's I-10, I-17, SR51, Superstition Freeway 60 and Loops 101, 202, 303, this is nothing. Strange how you don't see businesses or housing, midrises, highrises just trees.

I haven't seen very many Phoenix area videos on TH-cam. I need to get out there and take a look.

The Beltline is Raleigh's old inner loop freeway that was built in segments from the late 50s to the early 80s when the city/county was much, much smaller. Other than transportation, it mostly divides what most consider the older part of the city and the newer parts of it that grew after the establishment of Research Triangle Park to the west. There's another loop (540) that's about 2/3 completed around the city and some of its closest suburbs. As for the trees, things grew where it rains, and the lush neighborhoods that you don't see because of them are highly desirable and treasured.
