I would argue that James Buchanan’s completely inept handling of the slavery debate (especially with Bleeding Kansas and the Dred Scott decision) is well worthy of a spot on this list. I might even put it at the top. His presidency was the final straw that broke the camel’s back with regard to the Civil War.

Pretty sure his intention was to avoid country-wide paranoia and anxiety, but as we all know he's terrible at talking to the people as a president and it only made things worse both for him and the US.
Sad to see the Telecommunications Act of 1996 not make even the dishonorable mentions list. So much of our issues with modern media and its consolidation into just a select few companies stems from that bill. It has done so much damage to American media and to the flow of information here in the U.S.A. It failed to accomplish what it set out to do, expanding American media and encouraging competition in the market. Instead, it did the complete opposite and lead to a select few companies eating up the majority of lower level media networks, ultimately killing the ideal of independent media throughout much of the country and allowed those companies to build themselves to the point of just resting on the threshold of being monopolies. There are few things more dissalointing than looking at media trends from the passing of that bill to now, and it does alot to contextualize our current situation. The only benefit that came with that bill was improving access to media in rural parts of the country, but it was at the cost of the quality of our media.

He infringed on the rights of the local populace during construction of the Panama Canal and he ordered the dishonorable discharge of 167 African American soldiers who were falsely accused of the 1906 raid in Brownsville, TX.
Shock? As a student of history, no. Not one of these shocks me. Nor do the bad decisions of the last 5000 years. We are dealing with humans, after all. And we make bad choices. On the other hand, judging people in our past takes more than "oh, how horrible", because we also have to recognize the morality of the time. A lot of the things we find evil, were business as usual at the time. The real question is: Did we learn anything from these stupid decisions? Are we committed to never doing anything similar in the future? Sadly, at this juncture in they history of our country, I'd say no. We may be about to make a whole lot of new bad decisions and actions. I hope not.

Shock? As a student of history, no. Not one of these shocks me. Nor do the bad decisions of the last 5000 years. We are dealing with humans, after all. And we make bad choices. On the other hand, judging people in our past takes more than "oh, how horrible", because we also have to recognize the morality of the time. A lot of the things we find evil, were business as usual at the time. The real question is: Did we learn anything from these stupid decisions? Are we committed to never doing anything similar in the future? Sadly, at this juncture in they history of our country, I'd say no. We may be about to make a whole lot of new bad decisions and actions. I hope not.
