How to play limit hold' em by Sal T Balsak. 1. Raise your pocket pair pre-flop (everyone calls). 2. Flop a set, bet again (everyone calls). 3. Turn is mildly connected or suited to the board, bet again, (everyone calls). 4. River is another mildly connected card, but not suited, bet again, everyone folds except one player who raises you. 5. Call raise. 6. Watch them turn over their runner runner gut-shot straight. 7. Wish you were playing no-limit instead. 8. Repeat.
Sal T Balsak You should bring up the guy that limps Q's flop a set on a K high board and just calls you to the river, making you believe your top pair was good.
There are many components to poker secrets. One plan I discovered which successfully combines these is the card crusher fixer (google it if you're interested) definately the most useful plan i've heard of. Check out all the interesting info .
Last time i watched this i went on to get 8th of 1456 players in the SCOOP 6 max $11 buy in, it was my first ever two day tournie, day two i was card dead but managed a decent finish. Im about 10 hours away from that very same tournie so thought i would pop over for a refresher. Im searching YT for ANY Limit content at the moment. Thanks DNegs.
very insightful D-Neg. i rarely play limit and i do not find many helpful limit (short) videos to help educate me. limit seems more action packed and loose, which in turn makes it more fun while also limiting massive up/down swings. i really enjoyed this vid! & this is also the advantage you have over other amateur poker vloggers, you actually provide useful & highly experienced advice on mixed games (not just NL and PLO).

Thank you so much! When I read Mike Matusow's book he said: "Limit and no-limit are as different as piss and water". This is magnanimous. Same rules, same water base, but different in **perception** and I was always wondering what the strategy differences were. Excellent.
Really appreciating your 'how to' series, Daniel thanks. Helping me spot adjustments I haven't been making on these games. I hope you will be covering the full set of 22 games from the Dealer's Choice bracelet event. Thanks so much for sharing the information.
I'd love to see a video to transition from limit to NL. I realize pretty much all the videos are around NL, but having always only played limit poker in casinos, I'd love to hear your take on the transition in that direction. As always, thanks for the videos and advice!
Daniel - you're amazing and I know you will never read this, but would love to see some scenarios where you compare a hand of no-limit to limit poker. I feel like this has made me feel like I need to play looser pre-flop, but I don't feel like that's a winning strategy. Since people don't bluff, when you have pocket 4s and have a bet / call in front of you, I don't feel like my 4's are worth continuing with. Your video made it seem like you need to re-raise in that situation. I like your other lessons where you actually talk about specific hands. I feel like this one was more about the rules than the strategy. Also - the strategy is probably quite different between low-limit (2/4) and high limits and also heads-up v full ring. Thanks so much, though, for this resource. Very helpful
Daniel, great video! I live in Brantford and our casino only has limit holdem (I know that you've played there in the past). I don't play there as much as I'd like, and I've been meaning to studying up on more Limit. I think this is going to greatly improve my strategy going forward. Thanks for putting this kind of content out!
3bet pre with any two cards. Bet on every street with A high. Raise the turn with bottom pair. Man I LOVE it when players like this sit down at my LHE table.
This was really helpful. I went to play at a casino poker room for the first time this week. The only table was a limit hold em table and I played. I was surprised how different the strategy was with betting. I started to catch on after about a half hour. I found I was the only one betting and it helped me to clean up on some made hands with 5 people in. But my strategy felt all over the place and I was second guessing all my decisions. Looking forward to playing again soon with some of these strategies.
So if everyone is opening their range and playing aggressively wouldn't it be better to be a little nitty? Would the stakes really change your strategy like in a 6-12 game?
John Barry I play 6-12 half kill on a regular basis and I absolutely think It's essential to tighten up your range when on an aggressive table. Going nuts with 2-2 or A-Q in a multiway pot despite not connecting with the board, like Daniel suggested, is just going to cost you big bets in the end---as he mentioned, nobody is folding for just 1 bet in limit.
I think that the advice in this video is for mid to high stakes games but is far too aggressive in low stakes like the 3/6 I'm currently playing. Where everyone plays pretty passively and very rarely bluffs. Raises preflop usually means AA-QQ and AK, AQ, some players I play against never raise, no matter what and checkraises don't exist. People do go too far with their hands but don't call the river without a pair. If you triple barrel with Ace high all the way to the end, you're just giving your money away, I've made that mistake a few times. You pretty much have to have the best hand to win but if you have a better and more disciplined preflop strategy and can make good reads postflop you can still make money. I'm still chasing the two big bet an hour goal, currently winning about 1.75 bb/hr live.
What limits are comparable in skill when comparing Limit to No limit? i.e - if your a solid 400nl reg online and jumping into limit poker for the first time where should you start? Also, on same note how should you be treating bankroll management if you would normally want to have 50 buy ins as a NL reg what is going to keep you comfortable playing limit?
400nl is like 8/16 Limit holdem. HIghcard value goes up compared to nuttiness in NL, also ofc thinner valuebets, less bluffing frequency as betsizes are smaller compared to the pot. 500BB would be a "loose" BRM, would rather go for 1000BB, but I would also go in NL for a tigther BRM. Daniel. you are totally 100 % the best poker player there is. I love Tony G for his aggressiveness . And his obnoxious table manners. It's all part of his game. If I could combine the two I'd be the best player this world has ever seen. Love you both.
This was very helpful. I'm looking to start playing live low stakes limit at my local card room soon, and need to know stuff like this. I played online NL tournies at Bovada for a couple years, but I'm making the switch to live
you are bad ass man I love how you show your bluffs sometimes if you think about it that's pretty genius if you got your guy double guessing himself a lot of the time he'll call more often when you go all in with the nutz
I been struggling with my limit holdem games . I tend to play 2/4 because I am not a millionaire . I tend to play too conservative and only win like 2 to 3 hands in a 2 hr session . My question would be if you do what Daniel recommends , wouldn't you lose more money if you dont hit hands ? Unfortunately I get dealt alot of garbage most of the time and have no luck at all . Any advice ?
Let's say I play middle suited connectors (like 6-7s) and bet the flop. At some point, might it make sense to fold them if none of my draws hit instead of bloating a pot I'm highly unlikely to win? I guess it's an investment in showing people that you'll 3-bet with crap sometimes, so your value bets will get called when you actually have something later. I don't think you can do this too often though and still be profitable. I'm sure Daniel has more of a tolerance for variance than most people who play limit hold em too. Not sure how well this will work at the tables I play at, but I'll give it a shot sometime. Definitely interesting to hear his perspective on limit hold em.
This has been helpful I’m been playing like no limit do to the videos I been watching. Ya I play magic the gathering and I like to play aggressively I like to rush ppl so thank u now I know limit is where I need to be at and to stop playing basically scared like in no limit
The biggest pot I won in Limit Holdem was with a pair of 8's. It was a 7 or 8 way capped pot, I had 8c9c and the flop came 6c7c8d, it was capped again on the flop, turn was an off suit 2, it was capped 6 or 7 ways again. The river was another 2. I turned over my hand and muck, muck, muck, muck... The dealer ships me a mountain of chips, its so much fun when the dealer has to stand up and push the chips in 4 or five loads. :-)
Hey Daniel, thank you for the tips, you are doing a great job! :) I want to ask you, what's your favorite poker variation? I hope you'll see my comment...
Two thing one the tanking is so bad for the game and fucking brutal agreed. 2. It’s interesting how poker culture changes because originally I played 2-4 limit my first scared day playing live at Borgata. But I don’t see that any more anywhere
“Just, it’s a friendly thing, it’s a love tap, it’s a punch in the face just to remind you guys, like to speed up a little bit. Ok? So with love, it’s punches with love. That’s what we’re going with.” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 This is the most Canadian thing I think I’ve ever heard you say! You’re one of my top favorite players and I hope I can see you at a final table someday! 🤞
BRO. One of my worse pet peeves is people who talk to slow. Slot Thanks for the tutorial and for not talking hella slow. I gave up 15/30 for slots with my wife and i think imma get back to my local casino. And just watched your vid for the update on poker after covid. Thanks Daniel.
Hi everyone ! Hi Daniel ! Thanks for sharing some thoughts about Limit Hold'em. I's a very fun game I started playing a few years ago. Could you guys tell me where I can find some videos ? I've been searching for a while but it's hard to find long tournament / cash game videos on Limit Hold'em. Thanks a lot ! Good luck at the table. Peace from France.
What a raise means on each street in Limit: Preflop: I have two cards. Flop: I still have two cards. Turn: I have two cards that connected with the board. Maybe a full house, maybe a gutshot. River: I have at least top pair. Or I'm just an idiot.
great video...makes sense...I always wondered if I was correct when I was playing limit when I was playing so many pots I just couldnt fold when I normally would fold playing no limit.
I honestly believe learning limit poker makes you a better no limit hold em player (obviously you need to study no limit still) but it really helps you with the mathematical side of things.
I wonder at what games this advice is applicable. In the card rooms I play in, I feel like this wouldn't really work until 15/30....maybe 8/16. But next time I'm playing the 15/30 game, I'm definitely going to try this.
Played Limit last night. I'm UTG with QQ. SB has 3, 6 offsuit. SB Limps and I open pre flop. SB calls. Flop is 5, 2, 6 rainbow. SB Checks, I bet...SB Calls. Turn is a 9. SB Checks, I bet...SB calls. River is, of course, a 3. SB checks, I bet. SB calls and wins.
Average John first of all, it's straddle, second, depends on casino, even within the same state or city. Some only allow button, some button or utg, some anywhere but blinds. some any amount, some a specific amount. as a general rule, only button straddle is worth it, and that's very debated.
I find this advice very whimsical, and people will lose their money playing this way unless they have a lucky day. If you have a limited bankroll, you should only play pairs and big cards preflop, fold small blind garbage unless great odds, fold bottom pair on flop, see a turn with pairs to hit a set if you can do so cheaply or you know it will be a huge pot , only play A or K high flush cards unless late position and good odds for any 2 flush cards, suited connectors when cheap. Get in cheap and wait to hit. Value betting and 3- betting preflop is the best advice he gave, but only reraise preflop when you are sure you can get folders (rare in many limit games), its actually harder to 3 bet late because no limper is going to fold so you are putting more money in against too many players and you havent seen the flop. Tight aggressive, rarely bluff, raise from late position if you have a draw so you can get a free river card. Know your player.
Daniel, i think you should consider reviewing viewers hands. Would allow for more interaction with the community that watch your videos. Awesome video btw!
This was not explained well. If it's 3/6 then pre-flop and on the flop the bet and raises are by $3. So calling is $3, raise to $6, raise that to $9 and so on with $12 or $15 being a typical max for each street (although some places through out the max when it's heads up). On the turn and river it would be $6 to open then raise to $12, raise to $18 and so on.

Hey Daniel How much would you charge for private coaching sessions? (Could be done through Skype or FaceTime etc) I'd love to learn from the best in the business (in my opinion)
Daniel Negreanu alright cool thanks for the fast answer man, and yes I will definitely continue to religiously watch all your videos for sure! See you at the tables soon
I don't know Daniel this may be true for higher limits like 10/20, but I play 3/6 and 4/8 and I found it generally better to bet on folding and knowing hit frequenxy actually. I don't know how many times near the button or on the cut off I have had say 10-j and raised pre and flop 5-10-2 and have an a ace 10 guy bet into me I reraise they call and another guy calls. The turn rolls to 5-10-2-q-k and slows down the action a bit they bet I just call/call and the guy shows ace 10 and with pocket jacks in the lead all along and sometimes someone else is along for the ride for a weird river king. I have done thousands of hand analysis with my shuffle machine and it's generally true 9 handed that you will have the best hand only 3 out of 20 hands. Knowing this and the fact nobody folds why get aggressive with pocket 88? When I play it's 5 -6 players to the flop every time 2 pair usually wins and so many flushes man! Heck when I play and reraise or bet out I get people winning off me with one spade on the flop no pair when I hold ak top pair or 2 pair and it just runs ut to their flush more often then even the 2 pair holding up
The annoying thing with those games is that you can only find online action in Pokerstars (good reason for Daniel to be making those videos), and the competition there is tough even at the lowest of the lowest levels. I din't try limit hold'em, but I tried Stud H/L, Stud, Razz, 2-7, Omaha H/L, everyone knew their basic stuff.
Limit is a different game than No Limit, you are going to get sucked out on more, but youre going to pick your spots and get a lot of dead money into a pot, then extract value to the river, so when you suck out, you win big that more than covers the times you get sucked out on. Its about handling the swings, maximizing your winnings and minimizing your losses. And if youre playing tight, youre not putting your money in with garbage, you're going to be able to make money.
I would have thought the younger generation would be faster than the elder generation as with the immersion of online poker and the time restriction related to it. Guessing I'm wrong but maybe the higher standard online games have a softer/no time restrictions but I don't know, I've never done them myself.
If you're playing 100/200 LHE, the betting increments are $100 pre-flop and on the flop, and the bets on the turn and river are in increments of $200. So if you 3-bet preflop in 100/200 LHE, it means that the opening bettor made it $100, the first raiser made it $200, and you're putting in the third $100 bet to make it $300 to go. If you're 3-betting the turn in a 100/200 game, you're making it $600 total for your opponents to call. The other thing that NL players often get confused about is when we say "I was playing one and two at the Borgata last night..." In this instance, that means that we were playing 100/200 fixed limit poker of some kind, where as if we say "I was playing one-two last night," that means that we were playing 1/2 NL. 100/200 is really big game, btw.
Limit games are basically all 3 chip 6 chip raise or 4 chip and 8 chip raise games. 100-200 is basically 4-8 limit but for high rollers using 25 Chips. Buy in for 2 racks for $5000. The game is no tighter than 4-8 limit. Believe me!
While there is definitely some good advice in this video, it is taken to the extreme and I don't see how it could be useful to a beginner. Daniel advocates for very loose play here, which is exactly how beginners play FLH anyway. It is a losing strategy.
Bogdan Alexandru I think the problem here is Daniel is a no limit player. He sees the betting patern as just another bet to justify pot odds. This style of play is way too loose and aggressive though most people would not play this way on a limited and tight bankroll. Someone like Daniel has won multiple bracelets and over 15 million in cash so he has nothing to fear.
This strategy seems risky for high limit tables like 20/40, 30/60,40/80,100/200 unless you have unlimited funds to risk and throw away. This might work on 4/8 maybe, and even then you're throwing away money. I disagree with the champ for Limit advice.
I’m a bit surprised to hear him say these things. In limit Hold’em, he is exactly the sort of person I consistently beat. And that’s with some bluffing of my own. All it takes is having a decent hand, not even a good hand, and only betting with one of them, as opposed to pocket 2’s, which he mentions.
There are regulars at the Live! Casino outside of Baltimore who play tight. You cannot beat them with this strategy. They would all fold, except for the one or two who have better hands than you. Then they would take you to the end, except for the table captain Sheldon. He always calls.
I agree. If I see a player playing like this, I exploit them by waiting until I have the cards to keep re-raising them. To me, this strategy doesn't seem profitable everything because you throw away too much money on hands where the flop doesn't go your way. 3 betting in limit isn't going to push anyone with a halfway decent decent hand off the pot. I do think my willingness to fold gets noticed/exploited sometimes, and maybe then more 3 betting and less folding could be a good a counter/curveball to make opponents put money in the pot.
I tried playing this style my first time out and got hosed ! The table unfortunately was super aggressive . I never been on such an insane table , these guys were whacked . It was just down right crazy and didn't help most were wasted ,lol . I only won one hand that was chopped by 2 other ppl besides me . So this experience sucked to say the least .
Oh man it’s the best. If I’m lucky enough to get a bluff on a big pot on the river to work in like the first half an hour I’m there it’s just like hitting an ATM machine for free. Make sure you show the entire table your 8 high and then just watch them call you down every time no matter what with like K high just to try to “look you up”. Your 4th pair can make you so much money because they’re on TILT (As much as you can be in LHE) trying to “make you pay”.
I liked everything about this lesson. The strategies were well-explained. Thanks for doing these!

I turned over my hand and muck, muck, muck, muck... The dealer ships me a mountain of chips, its so much fun when the dealer has to stand up and push the chips in 4 or five loads. :-)
Great video! Thank you for doing these little poker educational videos.......great stuff! Taking lots of good notes so far.
Hey Daniel, thank you for the tips, you are doing a great job! :)
I want to ask you, what's your favorite poker variation?
I hope you'll see my comment...
Two thing one the tanking is so bad for the game and fucking brutal agreed. 2. It’s interesting how poker culture changes because originally I played 2-4 limit my first scared day playing live at Borgata. But I don’t see that any more anywhere
The worst is the guy in the 1 or 10 seat that feels like he has to show the dealer his cards every hand.
“Just, it’s a friendly thing, it’s a love tap, it’s a punch in the face just to remind you guys, like to speed up a little bit. Ok? So with love, it’s punches with love. That’s what we’re going with.” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
This is the most Canadian thing I think I’ve ever heard you say! You’re one of my top favorite players and I hope I can see you at a final table someday! 🤞
Does this strategy work for all limit games or higher limit, say 20-40 and up?
I also am learning a lot thanks for the info and good luck to you in the future
What’s a three bet? What’s value betting, don’t hurt me I’m new 😭
BRO. One of my worse pet peeves is people who talk to slow. Slot Thanks for the tutorial and for not talking hella slow.
I gave up 15/30 for slots with my wife and i think imma get back to my local casino. And just watched your vid for the update on poker after covid. Thanks Daniel.
Hey Daniel, can you make a video on PLO8 strategy, give us some tips?
so if you have a gutshot on the flop, the best way to generally play it is to check raise flop, bet turn and check/fold river unimproved? thanks.
"Its a love tap. A punch to the face." Hahahaha.
Great vid. Got a new found love of mix games. Loving 7-2 lowball and razz. Thanks Daniel.
Congratulations on all your winnings. Thanks for the videos also!
I like the 3 bet pre flop and raising on draws on the turn. I'm about to drive the 3/6 players at my local club crazy.
More rake is... just kidding, I enjoy these videos a lot. Thanks for the great work Daniel :)
Daniel! Would really like too see a How to Play OFC Poker video. Cheers!
What a raise means on each street in Limit:
Preflop: I have two cards.
Flop: I still have two cards.
Turn: I have two cards that connected with the board. Maybe a full house, maybe a gutshot.
River: I have at least top pair. Or I'm just an idiot.
is daniel a sucessfull limit players or is nl and tournaments his best games?
great video...makes sense...I always wondered if I was correct when I was playing limit when I was playing so many pots I just couldnt fold when I normally would fold playing no limit.
I honestly believe learning limit poker makes you a better no limit hold em player (obviously you need to study no limit still) but it really helps you with the mathematical side of things.
Does Daniel have any videos of limit Holden games being played? I'd like to see him play limit.
If you have a hand !Play Aggressive before pre-flop ! Check raise on the flop. Build the pot. Win big Pot.
Legend says if you are fast enough, Daniel responds!
Are you saying "free bet" or "three bet"?
Is the stratel bet always an option or just at specific casino's?
*straddle
Average John first of all, it's straddle, second, depends on casino, even within the same state or city. Some only allow button, some button or utg, some anywhere but blinds. some any amount, some a specific amount. as a general rule, only button straddle is worth it, and that's very debated.
Thanks. 🍻
Hi Daniel. It would mean the world to me if you said hi back. :) thx for the video I didn't know much about limit.
Daniel, i think you should consider reviewing viewers hands. Would allow for more interaction with the community that watch your videos. Awesome video btw!
So is the pot the limit? Or is there like some predetermined limit to every bet. Sorry if this was explained in the video :)
No, generally it is 3 or 4 raises over the high end of the limit stakes. E.g. in a 3/6 limit game, the max total bet would be $24 a street.
Ah that makes sense, thank you :P
This was not explained well. If it's 3/6 then pre-flop and on the flop the bet and raises are by $3. So calling is $3, raise to $6, raise that to $9 and so on with $12 or $15 being a typical max for each street (although some places through out the max when it's heads up). On the turn and river it would be $6 to open then raise to $12, raise to $18 and so on.
I meant 'throw out'
would like to hear something like 2-7 NL single draw

Hi Sir. Can you do a video on Pot Limit Holdem please? Thanks for the great lessons. @Daniel Negreanu
Can the Blinds fold after the cards are dealt before they put their money in the pot?
Hey Daniel How much would you charge for private coaching sessions? (Could be done through Skype or FaceTime etc) I'd love to learn from the best in the business (in my opinion)
Daniel Negreanu alright cool thanks for the fast answer man, and yes I will definitely continue to religiously watch all your videos for sure! See you at the tables soon
Google Daniel Negraneau, Masterclass
In before Daniel flexes or talks about his muscles.
Edit: 2 minutes in. New record! lol
This did help me win more pots thank you Daniel
Heck when I play and reraise or bet out I get people winning off me with one spade on the flop no pair when I hold ak top pair or 2 pair and it just runs ut to their flush more often then even the 2 pair holding up
Well, I guess you have to decide which Guru to follow. I‘m with Sklansky.
Should you have the same starting ranges in limit as you would for no limit? Can anybody tell me?
punches of love? hahahaha. Gee thanks. I can feel the love. Does thin value mean thin profits? More time needed at the table to make a buck?
The annoying thing with those games is that you can only find online action in Pokerstars (good reason for Daniel to be making those videos), and the competition there is tough even at the lowest of the lowest levels. I din't try limit hold'em, but I tried Stud H/L, Stud, Razz, 2-7, Omaha H/L, everyone knew their basic stuff.
Great video D! Really explained some good strategies!! Tyvm
you are my all time favorite poker player. it would be sick to play with you someday
What is best simulator?
This video makes me want to play limit hold em so bad!
And if youre playing tight, youre not putting your money in with garbage, you're going to be able to make money.
where are the muscles?
awesome video, it was hilarious when you yelled reraise! with aq
im so new what does 3 bet mean?
I would have thought the younger generation would be faster than the elder generation as with the immersion of online poker and the time restriction related to it. Guessing I'm wrong but maybe the higher standard online games have a softer/no time restrictions but I don't know, I've never done them myself.
I've never played limit before. How do you three bet in limit 100/200 if the first two rounds cannot exceed 100?
Limit games are basically all 3 chip
6 chip raise or
4 chip and 8 chip raise games.
B, he is not advocating playing loose. only being aggressive when you do enter the pot
"Statistical nightmare" very similar to Sklansky's "mathematical catastrophe." Let's hear it for the old school!
Great tutorial. Thanks Daniel.
excellent heuristics daniel, thank you very much
do Razz
But winning a bluff in limit hold'em is soooo much fun.
How to become a player like you . Help me please
