- Are you using a flutter tongue when your chart says to "growl"? You're doing it wrong! Flutter tongue has it's place, but the REAL growl just hits different! Try this technique, and you'll blow away your friends on your next solo. Go get it!

Are you a gigging musician? Freelancer? Band leader? Did you know I developed an app to help you organize everything? It's free! Find it here: linktr.ee/GigBoss
I’m a comeback trumpet player after 20+ years and have never growled before. Played more classical music. Can’t wait to try this 😊. Thanks!
Thanks so much for this video! All ive really seen on how to growl is flutter tongue but the actual "growl" sounds so much better! Thank you for making this video 🙏
Happy to help!!!
Thank you for the video. I also learned how to growl first. I believe it was while listening to Cootie Williams tapes as a kid. In fact, I often find myself accidentally growling on flutter tongue passages. Thanks again for your work.
In all my years of experimenting on my Old Cornet I’ve never heard of this growling effect and I can,t wait to see if I can master it and give it some to my Band Friends yeeooo 🎺🎶🎺🎶🕺🕺🕺😂😂😂
Thank you so much! I play trombone, and I've always been told that I had to roll my r's (flutter tongue) to growl, but I cant roll my r's! Ive tried so many techniques over the years, but none of them have worked. I'm so glad I found this video because now I'm actually able to do it!
Oh cool. I'm going to experiment with this in my singing! There's a way to do this and keep my voice clear (like not phlemy haha) and I think that's what I hear when singers growl.
I think making it sound phlemy is really just to. get people closer to what you need to do to get the uvula going. It's a close sensation, but not exactly what you're after. So I would say yes to being able to access that while singing with no phlem, though I can't pretend that's something I've done myself. Ha. Good luck!
@@AdamMeckler Thanks! Super cool that this trumpet video taught me something I could use singing! It's Nikita btw haha
Thank You sir love it! 🎺

I have been wondering this! I play Caravan and the usual lead trumpet does a great growl on it. When he’s not on the gig I play lead….and have been needing to learn how to growl!
🙌🏼🙌🏼🎺🎺 you got this!!
That’s so funny. I’m the same way as you- I do mostly classical music, and I have never been able to flutter tongue and always growled instead. I need to work on the flutter tonguing lol
Yes!! Haha
Nice information. Thanks for sharing.
me trying to do it with a $1 recorder
What if you get no sound when trying
Do German jazz trumpeters "growl" better?
This is a rolled German "r" which they learn naturally as a little kid.
I've never been able to master the German "r".
So how exactly do you make that kind of air flow. Like ik you said to do that thing with the back of your throat but i can't seem to get it, what is it supposed to feel like. I'm a freshmen so it could be lack of experience and stuff but i wanna learn it.
I speak dutch, so its pretty easy for me to growl :)
Yes!! Haha
How do I get it? Sounds goes all over the place with a long note
Does it hurt your throat)
Shouldn’t hurt your throat but it might feel weird and/or uncomfortable if you do it too much. Takes lots of air. Might sound like trash…cause that’s kind of the point…? Put some grit in that sound!
Dang... I'll never be able to do this. I've got no uvula...
Its way harder to growl high notes
Same with flutter tongue, though. High Notes will always be some kind of problem :)

Hmm. Keep your embouchure strong throughout. It takes a lot of air, but you can’t let it blow your lips wide open. I could see it hurting the throat if you did it too much, yes, but it doesn’t hurt my throat when I do it in performance in short bursts.
