This is one of the few channels that, as soon as I see there is a video, I immediately click on it to watch it. Others I just drop into my watch later box and don't watch it until I have some free time.
I think a lot of "experts" in many things in comics may be able to learn something from this. Great video. i'm going to pay attention to dialogue "bubbles and their lettering" more now.
Asterios Polyp is such a brilliant book! I was so stoked to see it on your show. I feel like people could teach courses around the ways Mazzucchelli bends and flexes and explores the craft of cartooning in that book.
What a fab video! I love this, thanks so much, very articulate and a great analysis of the lettering. Very enjoyable, first time watching your vids and I'll be back for more for sure 😁
I love how the balloons "look" like the person they are attached to. It reminds me of the dog that looks like its owner, you know. I mean, how do you make clear that this thing belongs to this person specifically? Well, you design them to look alike. It's a simple, yet very clever idea.
There's a lot of this going on in the book, too. Like purposefully almost making a point about the way it's built, but in a way that isn't entirely distracting, honestly. It's just a brilliant piece of work. - Hass
Would you say that when an artist letters his own comics that it gives the lettering more personality? I remember reading once that Moebius was surprised that lettering was a separate job from the artist himself.
I think it wholly depends on what the letterer wants to do with it, but also boring things like time and pay factors into it. A lot of Marvel and DC books have a "house"style that limits what a letterer can even do with it, so you'll see a lot more playfulness with indie books generally. - Hass
Have you considered doing some videos on webcomics? I'm mainly asking because the fairly recent pages of Paranatural By Zack Morrison have one of the most amazing fight sequence in comics I've ever read. Two smiultaneous fights that cut between them by way of cobmination of the movement from the previous panel keeping a continuous flow during the entire scene. You should check it out.

Haha thanks Nathan :)

I read Polyp just the other week and was all hyped about the lettering. I'm so glad you uploaded this.
I think I'll do a second part because there's some nice art touches that definitely need discussing in this...

I'll probably pick it up then!
I've never been disappointed by a book I've blindly bought because I trusted you.
In the earlier issues of Batman by Tom King, Batman's speech bubbles and font for his dialogue is noticeably bigger than everyone else's.
Ha! Never noticed that. I'm going back to check it out!

Strip Panel Naked And so the student becomes the master...

I'll take a look -- I've had a lot of webcomic recommendations so need to just find some time to actually read them!

That's not how to pronounce "Mazzucchelli"...
