Yeah, it's called Hexproof in Magic. We also have Shroud, which means it can't be targeted period, even by your own spells and abilities. We also have a saying that applies here: "Reading the card explains the card. "
And remember, hexproof doesn't mean full proof. Cards like Supreme Verdict and Terminus in MTG are like the equivalent to Raigeki and Dark Hole in Yu-Gi-Oh. Might not be able to be targeted.. but doesn't mean it's immune to boardwipes. Again, Indestructible on a MTG card text doesn't mean it cannot be exiled or returned to the deck or hand.
There’s some weird stuff in Magic too. Most confusing for me is the fact that “Lifelink” and “Whenever this creature deals damage you gain that much life” aren’t interchangeable despite the second basically being the definition of the first.
A close friend of mine asked me yesterday "So wait, Mirror Force. Would I be able to destroy the God Cards with Mirror Force?" "Yep." "I thought they had protection from stuff like that?" "Only when they're summoned, Obelisk has on-field effect protection, but it's just from targeting." "Does Mirror Force target things?" "Nope." "The Gods die from looking in a Mirror. Kaiba be damned." _True_
Me and my friends used to think that "when this card is summoned, cards and effects cannot be activated" meant cards and effects could not be activated while that god was on the field. This made the gods Op. Looking back on it now, it is very stupid...
@@demetriusshuler1391 Kaijus didn't exist around this time. Even if it did, it could technically be destroyed by Kaiju effects. Afterall, what was that trap card that destroyed all 3 god cards in the movie between Kaiba and Yugi?
“Obelisk can’t be targeted, that means he’s immortal!” “Somehow I don’t think black holes discriminate between targets and non targets” “But muh anime!”
“Most of the issues would not be a problem if they read the card” 4 years later, after playing duel links for a few months, I can confirm that even still, no one reads.
Quinn Not everyone has kaiju decks. And most competitive duels not everyone knows the deck that they're using. So, even if they're using a competitive Egyptian God deck of some kind, depending on how it's made. I say they have a 50/50 chance of winning.
Aaron Cross Just because people don’t have Kailua decks, doesn’t mean they don’t run Kaijus. Lots of decks slip in a copy or two of Kaijus just because they are good at getting rid of big monsters or just pesky monsters. It bypasses almost all cards protection and can be brought down a lot easier sometimes than the monster you just tributes. And I’ve never heard of or seen a competitive Egyptian god deck. At best, I think they would go into a deck that likes to flood the board like six samurais who also have good draw power to get them out better.
The thing about that tho is it's a six sams deck with a god card splashed in. Sort of like how obelisk was thrown into some frognarch decks back in the day because it was just a really solid even more powerful option then monarchs. There wasn't a lot of ways to get around it either. Both of these decks would still be perfectly fine without them, they just COULD put them in, ya know?
What's funny is that I believe that there are handful of super specific decks that revolve around each God Card: Slifer - played in a fairy deck with lots of draw power Obelisk - played in a deck that revolves around getting effects from Tribute Summoned monsters (so basically monarchs) Ra - played in a deck that focused on making the gap in life-points as big as possible before switching it on your opponent That said though all three are incredibly niche and require time to set up, which they don't really have in this state of the game.
Actually, I’ve been slipping slifer into my side deck playing true king six sam. My turn 1 combo lets me get three tributes when I play against something like salamgreats, which has basically no ATK, so it’s a small floodgate that I can use. Of course ra isn’t the best card to use, because I’m giving up going into a combo that ends with a 3 material calamities and a borreload Savage with two negates and a decide talker if I don’t have extenders.
Slop I can’t tell if you are joking, but if you aren’t, then I’ll explain somethings If it’s a secret effect, that probably means it isn’t acknowledged by judges and isn’t public information and that the ruling would not be allowed. If it was printed on the card or the card got a reprint with new effects or tweaks to their old effects, then the ruling would exist if it was added as a readable part of the card. So, if you tried this “secret ruling” at tournaments, you wouldn’t get the effect.
I'm not too surprised that comments questioning targeting effect exist because, as was mentioned in another video, a lot of old cards were erratad due to inconsistent wordings. People had to figure things out like whether words like "select" meant the same as "target" and I don't think that there was a way for casual players to know with certainty without looking up each card's effect online. This possibly led to the casuals that owned the gods claiming the strongest (and incorrect) interpretations akin to the misinterpretations of Patrician of Darkness.
Oh god, Patrician of Darkness was one of the worst offenders.... Casual Scrub: "Yes I'll make your monster attack your other monster!" Me: "I'm sure that isn't how that works." Casual Scrub: "Yes it does! It says I can select who you can attack! Now I win!"
Your why nobody plays Egyptian god cards video was the first Yu-Gi-Oh card game video I watched. I really enjoyed learning about the game from a competitive viewpoint. It made me watch almost every video you have on the card game and I for one am glad that you make videos for yugioh. Thank you for helping me learn.
So when the DSoD movie came out, I got some of the cool alt art Obelisks and thought about how to make them viable, since I knew that the god cards aren't very good, but Obelisk has had some sort of usability before. So I did the research and figured out that the Igknights would work as they were able to swarm quickly enough to make tribute fodder, due to popping the scales. So I got all the cards needed and had my nice casual but useable Obelisk Igknight deck. Then about a month later, Master Rule 4 got announced. Yeah... so Igknights suffered huge from that. Terrible timing, right? Anyway, since then I did get some of the Duelittle Chimeras, Link Spiders, Zefra Metaltron to help with link arrows and patch some of the holes in the deck, but obviously it's a lot slower than it was before. Basically, I learned that any chance one has at making a god card work is not necessarily going to last that long. They require way too much resources and you lose a ton of field presence. Obelisk is the best of the three (considering Ra is one of the worst cards in the game, those contradictory effects), but the deck is still more of a fun collectors item than anything that's going to be winning games any time soon. Also yes, people need to learn the difference between targeting and non-targeting.
Dzeef i think you should just make a video reading the rulebook and explaining the game to ppl who dont understand it. Going over psct and how a card has to say something explicitly in order to be ruled a certain way
Those people doeb't want to understand the rules, that tge point. They want to play the cards like they were in their childhood and if the rules tell them that they cannot, then acxording to them the rules are wrong. I find seriously infuriating that konami keep publishing anime cards whitout their anime effects. They are basically selling bootlegs
sono un idiota; it's for the best for some anime cards to not have their anime effects irl. the anime and the physical game have drastically different needs when it comes to game design/card design.
I have been following you very closely for 6 months now, watched every vid you have! I think it would really benefit a lot of your listeners to read each and every card effect when referring to cards. Helps us remember and then they have no excuse for misunderstanding
I finally figure out the way to describe why i like your videos so much. Im a casual and i find it very intriguing to look inside the mind of a competitive player that breaks it down intelligently and honestly for the casual players and makes it easier to understand.
the magical reflect slime "strategy".... i literally did the exact same thing against a friend of mine except it was with amazoness swordswoman.... 8 years ago
The funny thing is that I am that 30 year old that hasnt played yugioh in 15 years. And I completely understand the things you say, and comprehend fully why the gods aren't very good. Its very funny to me that peoples' desire for the admittedly very cool god cards to be good clouds their judgment to the point that they refuse to admit their shortcomings. Also that people just cant wrap their heads around the idea tjat your channel is about high competitive tournament winning strategy. I listen to your videos because I love hearing about the game theory behind what makes a card or strat good or bad. Its excellent learning for an aspiring game designer. Thanks!
I don't care how old this video is, I need to comment anyway. I love that last comment where the commenter says they made their god card invincible and then your reply is just "...Just Kaiju it?" That was the thing that got me the closest to laughing out loud in this video
I'm sure it's frustrating for you to keep reading dumb comments, but are we really still fighting this fight? I feel like it's been established that your critics are gonna use non-logic, I'm trying to put this delicately but I think it's time to let it go man. Sit back with a beer, count the views, and let the idiots be idiots
I'm just saying as a real person and not just a YT channel I hope you don't walk around all day stressing the things people say the way I do with my shit rocket league teammates
The Egyptian Gods are wonderful for when I play against my 10-y.o. brother who I´ve taught the game a few weeks ago. He often wants to play over doing chores, but he always has to do his stuff anyways because he never beat me. I am pure evil.
I just realized that the whole thing about the "secret effects" of cards aren't technically wrong. I mean, they're absolutely wrong, but Relinquished used to have a secret effect telling you that you have ritual summon it.
Everyone else is mad because you argue against the god cards. I'm still angry because Slifer is called Slifer. Ra, Obelisk....and Slifer. Yeah I dont use them when I play but, if I HAD to choose one it would probably be Obelisk.
The original Egyptian God video is the first video of yours that I saw. I only had the illegal copies as a kid so I wanted to learn about the legal versions (didn’t even know there were legal versions until that video). It’s a great video and I have enjoyed your content ever since. Keep making amazing videos!
Keyon J especially ra. The other two are alright other than the 3 required tributes. I think slifer's effect is the best but he lacks protection and his atk is inconsistent
Honestly, they just need the anime effect and more protection because the gods were clearly meant to be very difficult to get rid off and they are ok. Whit the tcg god they followed the mtg guidelines too much.
In terms of general playability, "Ra Sphere Mode" and cards like "Mound of The Bound Creator" Make the gods at least competent. There are options, it does suck that the gods are terrible though.
Opponent: activate Ra Me: Madolche Nights/E-con/Widespread Ruin/ any other form of disruption worth playing Opponent: connection failed Alternitave definately legal play: Chain sparks when the opponent pays for Ra because Ash Blossom sais cards can be activated from the hand.
Nuh-Uh! The Egyptian God Cards are unstoppable, 'cause it was like that in the Anime! (I still find it funny that several cards were made specifically to replicate Ra's Anime effects)
I used to play YGO a lot back before problem-solving card text and legal god cards. Back then you couldn't always tell whether a card targetted or not just by reading it, you had to learn them on a case-by-case basis, and this is the mindset I think a lot of old and/or casual players are still stuck in. I was overjoyed when problem-solving card text was introduced, and I still think it's the best thing to happen to the game since the introduction of a ban list. (For example, Negate Attack and Mirror Force had very similar wording, one targetted and the other didn't. You couldn't figure that out without asking a judge or checking rulings online. It was a mess.) Also, back then the only Egyptian God Cards that existed were the old illegal ones without effect text, which is probably why many people still think the god cards as a whole are illegal. At one point, all that existed were. And since the legal god cards aren't very relevant, I think there are many people out there who don't realise they exist and are separate from the originals.
special summon Slyfer on your opponents turn and watch as they can't play most monsters without them being destroyed. is it an optimal play? no but it's fun
omega5040 I can name three archetypes that could counter slifers ability. Or you could Kaijus it. Seriously, if there are cards that like to be destroyed by card effect, which there exists tons, then slider is just a free pop for them.
I'm honestly glad that you made that video in the first place because it lead me into clicking all the other videos made by you to the point where I'm almost back into playing the game. I'm already making a deck and all. The only thing left is to try to qctually play the deck at a local which I'm currently scared to do because I'm antisocial as heck. With that said, great job on making that video and I cant wait to see what deck you make using those god cards.
I miss this kinda content, way more controversial. Lads got pure salty it was so funny. I keep coming back to these discussions. I love a bit of stirring the pot.
The double comma at 10:00 is a mistake originating from another language. Some languages use double commas to start quotations and two apostrophes to close it.
Tip: If for some reason really you want to play the E. Gods just pendulum summon them with the supreme king gates monster (not including the chicken)... though it still wouldn't be worth it the time and effort.
Hay man! I never was a yu-gi-oh fan but i have no idea why i started watching your channel... Think i just like the way you talk about your passion is good enough of a a reason for me to watch :) Keep it up! I have no idea if you are "right" or "wrong" but i get atleast a valid Content vid with a description why some cards are "bad" :)
"Oh no they don't prevent cards from activating forever, that would make them broken" Preventing cards... ...from activating... would be broken... AMENO AMENO AMENO IWATO
A lot of people fail at reading comprehension for sentence syntax. In addition to Dark Hole: Raigeki and Lightning Vortex are also great substitutes for Ra's second optional effect Then there's: Fissure, Hammer Shot, and Smashing Ground
people seem to be stumbling over the sequence in which things activate and deactivate, such as when one is normal summoned. A worked example outlining a potential board-state and sequence through the main stages and such could assist. This is probably outside of the scope of what you wanted to do though
Raigeki Break and Tyrant Dragon another good example. Raigeki Break doesn't say anywhere in context that it specifically is targeting Tyrant Dragon, therefore gets destroyed.
Just fyi, there are languages where the notation marking the beginning of a quotation is on the same line as dots and commata while the marks at the end of a quotation are up there.
Yeah Magic has hexproof and shroud where it's either a creature can't be targeted by any spells or abilities (shroud) or just spells and abilities your opponent controls (hexproof) it's why Lightning Greaves is used so much in Commander and got a lottery card in Kaladesh.
In duel links Marik has a skill called power of the tributed, where Ra gains attack equal to monsters used for the tribute, so you can pretty much not pay the lp cost and use the second effect to destroy monsters.
Magic does indeed have Hexproof (can't be targeted by sources your opponents control), and we used to have Shroud (can't be targeted) for far longer, but there's another mechanic that's complicated enough it causes similar confusion: Protection. Protection is best summarized by D.E.B.T. A creature with, say, Protection from White cannot be Damaged, Enchanted/ Equipped, Blocked, or Targeted by White sources. The magic word there is "targeted" just like with Obelisk the Tormentor. Leading to some confusion from newbies who say your Wrath of God (a white card and the equivalent to Yugioh's Dark Hole) doesn't destroy their creature because it has Protection from White. It's the same misunderstanding. Wrath of God just says "Destroy all Creatures." it doesn't target or deal damage so Protection doesn't interact with it at all. Even better is there is a card that is massive "casual bait" named Progenitus. I won't go into why it is bait, and I think it did see play in some reanimator decks IIRC but under normal circumstances it's just too costly to play for the value it provides. Progenitus simply says that it has "Protection from everything." Combine a slightly complex mechanic with the stupid simplicity of this card's rules text and you get newbies saying "Your Wrath of God can't destroy my Progenitus! It has Protection from everything! It has Protection from Wrath of God itself!" Now this technically isn't false as "everything" means everything the game keeps track of including card names, but that doesn't matter. It also has Protection from Coverted Mana Cost 4, White, and Sorceries, but it still doesn't matter. Wrath of God does not target nor deal damage therefore it circumvents whatever Protection a creature may have as well as Hexproof and Shroud. Another similarity I'd like to note that can be the cause of confusion like in the last comment is "Kaiju'ing". Magic doesn't Tribute creatures to summon other creatures like Yugioh does, but we do have some effects that revolve around Sacrificing; which I assume to be mechanically similar. While not baked into the summoning system it's still the same in that you cannot Sacrifice your opponents creatures to pay for your effects because that's not exactly a "sacrifice" is it? However like Kaiju there are exceptions to this but I'll focus on Diabolic Edict and its derivatives. The text on these cards simply says "Target Player Sacrifices a Creature." Obviously the comparison isn't 1:1 with Kaiju for many reasons but the idea is that regardless of protection on the creature, be it actual Protection, or Hexproof, Shroud, Indestructible, Regenerate, etc there is absolutely no ability that can save it*. Since the card targets the player, not the creature, and abilities like Indestructible and Regenerate merely prevent a card from being "destroyed and destroy effects" not being sacrificed. *Obviously not taking into account things like countering the spell or the player having Hexproof or Shroud themselves.
The not reading cards thing really permeates into duel links too. I main TDs and one of my favorite monsters to go into if I feel like I have a strong read on the opponent’s deck is sword breaker. I detach, declare the monster type, and pass. I’ll call dragon and people still think they can swing their blue eyes into me. Granted I’m at silver rank because I don’t go as hard on the game as I used to, but I can’t help but laugh every time it happens because it’s genuinely hilarious.
I actually managed to get all 3 God Cards from the Legendary Collection Binder from Walmart, which I remember being fairly cheap. The drawback is it's the ones that say cannot be used in a duel, but hey. They're pretty neat to look at, it's not like you have to actually play them.
As a retail worker I understand how frustrating it can be when people are so confident yet so wrong because they refuse to read what is printed directly in front of them.

“But muh anime!”

4 years later, after playing duel links for a few months, I can confirm that even still, no one reads.
In Germany the quotation marks are actually ,,sample" but the keyboard does not have a key for that lmfao
same in Slovenia

Quinn Not everyone has kaiju decks. And most competitive duels not everyone knows the deck that they're using. So, even if they're using a competitive Egyptian God deck of some kind, depending on how it's made. I say they have a 50/50 chance of winning.
Aaron Cross What? I’m just quoting probably the funniest thing I’ve ever heard out of Doug’s mouth lol
Quinn I'm just saying. And yes it was kinda funny. 😂

"Just kaiju it." the number 1 sure fire way to rid yourself of your worst problems! Except Darkest Diablos. Kaijus are his best friends.
What's funny is that I believe that there are handful of super specific decks that revolve around each God Card:
Slifer - played in a fairy deck with lots of draw power
Obelisk - played in a deck that revolves around getting effects from Tribute Summoned monsters (so basically monarchs)
Ra - played in a deck that focused on making the gap in life-points as big as possible before switching it on your opponent
That said though all three are incredibly niche and require time to set up, which they don't really have in this state of the game.
The only reason I'm even capable of understanding the difference between 'target' and 'destroy' is because of AoE attacks from MMOs and MOBAs.
Lol Yugioh players reading cards. That's cute.

Uhhhh my dad works at konami and he confirmed that the the god cards have a secret effect that's not printed so you're 101% wrong mate
Slop I can’t tell if you are joking, but if you aren’t, then I’ll explain somethings
If it’s a secret effect, that probably means it isn’t acknowledged by judges and isn’t public information and that the ruling would not be allowed.

Casual Scrub: "Yes I'll make your monster attack your other monster!"

*Yu-Gi-Oh!*
If you put a lp (low pass filter) on your vocal channel at around 70hz, you can get rid of the background hum in the video
Dzeef i think you should just make a video reading the rulebook and explaining the game to ppl who dont understand it. Going over psct and how a card has to say something explicitly in order to be ruled a certain way
brawlpwnagestudios "yugioh for dummies like you"
~by Dzeef
Those people doeb't want to understand the rules, that tge point. They want to play the cards like they were in their childhood and if the rules tell them that they cannot, then acxording to them the rules are wrong. I find seriously infuriating that konami keep publishing anime cards whitout their anime effects. They are basically selling bootlegs
sono un idiota; it's for the best for some anime cards to not have their anime effects irl. the anime and the physical game have drastically different needs when it comes to game design/card design.
Some cards should not be released at all an certain others should wait untill powercreep catch up whit them. But nerfing iconic cards is just sad
i think that would be an amazing video idea. It took me forever to learn a lot of the specifics of yugioh when i got back in a couple years ago.
I have been following you very closely for 6 months now, watched every vid you have! I think it would really benefit a lot of your listeners to read each and every card effect when referring to cards. Helps us remember and then they have no excuse for misunderstanding
9:10 insert farfa"sometimes but not all the time" reference
I finally figure out the way to describe why i like your videos so much. Im a casual and i find it very intriguing to look inside the mind of a competitive player that breaks it down intelligently and honestly for the casual players and makes it easier to understand.

Thanks!

That was the thing that got me the closest to laughing out loud in this video
I'm sure it's frustrating for you to keep reading dumb comments, but are we really still fighting this fight? I feel like it's been established that your critics are gonna use non-logic, I'm trying to put this delicately but I think it's time to let it go man. Sit back with a beer, count the views, and let the idiots be idiots
I find it interesting that you understand I should just sit back and get views, but dont understand these videos get views ;)

Good for you man! 1,000,000 views on a video is a huge accomplishment you should definitely be proud of yourself!
Everyone else is mad because you argue against the god cards. I'm still angry because Slifer is called Slifer. Ra, Obelisk....and Slifer. Yeah I dont use them when I play but, if I HAD to choose one it would probably be Obelisk.

Yeah it's really disrespectful that some jerk on 4Kids decided to rename "The Dragon of Osiris" after himself. What a jerk

That, and the guy has been dead for years.
The original Egyptian God video is the first video of yours that I saw. I only had the illegal copies as a kid so I wanted to learn about the legal versions (didn’t even know there were legal versions until that video). It’s a great video and I have enjoyed your content ever since. Keep making amazing videos!
We need the god cards to be retrained so they can be playable
Keyon J especially ra. The other two are alright other than the 3 required tributes. I think slifer's effect is the best but he lacks protection and his atk is inconsistent
Honestly, they just need the anime effect and more protection because the gods were clearly meant to be very difficult to get rid off and they are ok. Whit the tcg god they followed the mtg guidelines too much.
In terms of general playability, "Ra Sphere Mode" and cards like "Mound of The Bound Creator" Make the gods at least competent. There are options, it does suck that the gods are terrible though.
Towers need three sacrifices but still saw tons of play. It is probably possible.

"...just kaiju it?" i laughed so hard lmao
It was a mess.)
Also, back then the only Egyptian God Cards that existed were the old illegal ones without effect text, which is probably why many people still think the god cards as a whole are illegal.

I'm honestly glad that you made that video in the first place because it lead me into clicking all the other videos made by you to the point where I'm almost back into playing the game. people seem to be stumbling over the sequence in which things activate and deactivate, such as when one is normal summoned. A worked example outlining a potential board-state and sequence through the main stages and such could assist. This is probably outside of the scope of what you wanted to do though
Joey wheeler, who needs god cards when you have family 😂
Raigeki Break and Tyrant Dragon another good example. Raigeki Break doesn't say anywhere in context that it specifically is targeting Tyrant Dragon, therefore gets destroyed.

Another egyptian god + casual video, not gonna lie these are my favorite videos on this channel
Just fyi, there are languages where the notation marking the beginning of a quotation is on the same line as dots and commata while the marks at the end of a quotation are up there.
Yeah Magic has hexproof and shroud where it's either a creature can't be targeted by any spells or abilities (shroud) or just spells and abilities your opponent controls (hexproof) it's why Lightning Greaves is used so much in Commander and got a lottery card in Kaladesh.
i just love magic: The Gathering
We're not in the anime world, people. This is real life.
You need to make a video on how Dark Hole doesn’t target
I don't know why but I died laughing at "that makes sense, you certainly can" (4:06)
I actually managed to get all 3 God Cards from the Legendary Collection Binder from Walmart, which I remember being fairly cheap. The drawback is it's the ones that say cannot be used in a duel, but hey. They're pretty neat to look at, it's not like you have to actually play them.
That guy in the end got Kaiju'd through TH-cam
