The biggest thing I see common when I hear a Linux fanboy saying "anyone can install Linux". I think of the times I've "fix" families computers and see on r/computerhelp because they enable notifications to random sites, and get notification bomb saying they got a virus. My grandpa told me "McAfee" is notifying him he has a virus and other "AV" telling him he has a virus. That's a typical average user. If they believe their web browser can scan for viruses then they can't install Linux on their system
I've only recently adopted Linux as the main OS I use most of the time, but I think you're spot-on in your criticisms about the issues with Linux that prevent it becoming as popular as Windows.
Thanks, it's interesting to hear opinions on this topic from an experienced Linux user. Unfortunately some people misunderstood your take on this topic and they take this personally.
That happens more and more these days, man. Misunderstanding, that is. Taking things personally seems to be a sport on YT lately. I've indulged in it myself. There are better things to do now.
Operating system usage is just another form of identity politics these days. It's part of intersectionality for a lot of people who see it as one checkbox on their whole life/worldview and public facing identity. The amount of people who use it because Linux improves their workflow seems to be a lot smaller than the people who do it for a cause, cult-like.
I dual boot Linux and Windows I see pros and cons of both. I have known a person who wasted a lot of money replacing very new GPU and PSU on a Linux install. I told him that I would install Windows 10 on a old spare drive and see if the issues were still there. He would not, and it later turned out to just be a driver issue with the GPU. It turned out alright though as the parts were later used to make a second PC.
I won't say that I've never fallen victim to a trap like this one, but I learned, dusted my breeches off and went on. GPU drivers in Linux can be a source of some pain, especially for Nvidia cards I tend to favor. It takes a while for the drivers for Linux to drop sometimes. As Marvin the Martian might say, "Delays, delays..."
Windows most popular? Most computer users never install an OS, it comes "free" with the machine. So it's not popular, ie chosen from a number of systems tried first.
Hey Kent I agree with your points on the community of Linux being divided and needing to stop, it's not helpful to anyone. It's one of the main reasons I started this channel a month ago but have not posted any videos because I just know I am gonna get trolled being a noob. I only have used Linux off and on since 2019.
When 90% of typical home computer users (guessing, of course) spend most of their time in a browser, what the hell difference does it make which OS they use?
In most cases it comes down to money. MacOS is for all those who can afford to throw money at a problem. Windows is for those who can afford to keep throwing money at a problem. I'm not a wealthy man, and I'm willing to do the work to learn new things. Linux works for me.
@horusfalcon Why do you claim that Windows users have to throw money at it? I haven't "thrown money" at Windows in many years. Do you realise that there's a mountain of free Windows software?
@@horusfalcon I'm not sure it ever comes down to money where the OS is concerned. When more than 75% of home users were raised on the mother's milk of Microsoft Windows, its a foregone conclusion that most of them will stick with Windows. Its not because they're weighing the cost of Windows vs somethoing else. They're not even considering "something else." Do you honestly think most Linux users are running it because they can't afford something else? PUH-leeeze!
@@danjuroff -- Your previous, for context: "I'm not sure it ever comes down to money where the OS is concerned. PUH-leeeze!" There's a bit to unpack here so let's address that last point first. I'm sorry you took the mistaken impression that I think "most Linux users are running it because they can't afford something else." I was speaking from _my own experience, and my own viewpoint,_ as the last two sentences in my previous to you bear out. It's not that I _couldn't afford it_ -- I _did_ afford it for quite some time, and decided _I was tired of paying for something that I had to keep repairing anyway._ People have their own reasons for choosing Linux over Windows. Cost is certainly a factor for me, but there are other factors that really swung the decision, too, among them _reliability._ If, as you imply, the price of an operating system is not a concern for you, all I can say is it must be nice to make enough money that you feel you can afford to waste it on Windows and its attendant baggage. Me? I grew up in the Projects, in a single parent situation. Most of my life I struggled to make ends meet, to provide for my family, and to just live as best I could. When I got to the point I could afford better, I chose _what I had already found to be better for my use case - Linux._ I have been and still am an A+ since 2003. I did computer repair and support on the side starting in 1981. I still support customers who run Windows, and I tell 'em all up front that Windows issues are what make up the majority of my repeat business. I am asking my customers who wish to migrate to Windows 11 to look deeply into the matter if they care about their privacy, the data they produce, and all the recurrent costs of "software as as subscription" that are baked into Windows these days. I hope I have answered your concerns, and that you will have a better understanding of my point of view.
nope they like me just fine, so do the Mac and pro linux people :D the only people that don't like me are hubby tech people :) but I will go and ask my it and dev coworkers if I am isolated lmao.
Linux veterans doesn't get the fact that somebody can be a nerd without ever using the terminal. Isn't someone who develops plugins for Blender on windows for example a nerd in his or her own right? Be it on windows or Linux, many people just want to be a nerd of a single category of software be it image editing or cad design or whatever. A computer is ultimately a tool and a great ecosystem of apps is the lifeline of a platform. Not all people is gonna be a system administrator or network administrator or coder. Someone may be coding for Blender for example. How that's going to be drastically different in Linux than on windows i would like to know for example
Third party support is what is really holding Linux back. If Linux had the same driver and software support it would be a no-brainer. Computers are used to do work. Anything that impedes that is going to piss users off. You can't expect professionals who have used photoshop their whole careers to move to GIMP because it's open source. Not gonna happen.
@@cyberbillpshow me how adobe just works. Or Microsoft excel. Some companies have proprietary software to interact with these and their file formats. Do those binaries just work? How about tools that interact with COM objects, or PowerShell specific scripts? Yes there are a lot of alternatives. Yes a lot of software does work. But to say it *all* works is a braindead take, and if you run 5 Linux machines you should have the experience to know that plenty well.
@@cyberbillp nah. For example, I can't update my Cardo com unit firmware on Linux. There's no driver. I can run the utility using wine, but unless there's a driver, that's useless. I use Linux 98% of the time but I still need a Windows install to do certain things.
That redhat thing of killing Centos is pretty crazy like you said super sad! But lot of people complained at the time, you can see older videos complaining about that and how they want to move away from CentOS and to stay away from CentOS Stream etc, the ciommunity was not ok with it and not 'fine' with it.
No anger here. The main objections I have to Windows started with Licensing 6.0 and the ushering in of Software as a Service. I had heard about Linux, and tried it in 1996. I saw a vision of my future, free from SAAS and other such schemes. Over the years, I've become comfortable with what I use, and constantly amaze folks with the work I do on my Linux systems. Now I'm retired, and still running Linux. It's that simple. I am systemd-free because I choose to be for my own reasons. (Systemd is a Red Hat product, man.) I tell folks about Linux mainly when they see my systems and ask about what they are running. A few of them have switched, mainly on the basis of the merits. Some of them have switched back. We're still friends. I agree wholeheartedly with you about all the anger lately - it's like there's something in the water. I get angry, too -- I'm only human. I do try to keep it real, though.
beautiful, the truth hurts, but it is necessary. I've been using linux for more than 4 years (and windows too), and it's clear to me that not everything can be done in it, even at the beginning that some things take you more time configuring a software to make it work, than actually using it. pd: the community is toxic, I know that the ego of being intellectual can blind people, I see it a lot in the tech area, but in linux they are too much. good video, really appreciated, ty.
"'Whuts teh difference beetweeen u and me?" Im seeeting on my ballsack. "It's still the same sheeeety world we in!" Bingo. That's why I follow your Channel.
Yeah, well this is the "Kent hates Linux" channel so the rant is no surprise. I won't go into all the reasons why people end up stuck on Windows rather than using Linux though the endless cries of "Linux is so hard to use, it's only for techies" messages on every post on how Linux is EASY to use actually counts for a lot. Scare tactics, alas, work. I am reading a lot of people who have switched who state they were kept away by the endless claims that Linux was a terminal driven experience. However, one of the main reasons people are not using Linux as much as they could - for free - is simply that they do not know about it. I mention Linux and people go "What?" When I show, they are amazed. What is happening is a number of factors that ARE pushing people to Linux now. It's a combination and screaming the desktop use figures do not mean anything is rich given the Windows fanbois have been laughing at Linux desktop share for years from the same sources. Fact is, Windows share is dropping, Mac usage is dropping and Linux desktop share is rising and rising steadily. It's also interesting to note when we get spikes in Linux desktop use like Microsoft's announcement of Windows 11 and insane hardware requirements people cannot afford to meet, Recall being accounced, data shifted over to OneDrive without consent, Recall will not be able to be deactivated... Each moment of 'Microsoft abuse' has led to a leap in Linux desktop use. I hold that Linux is on the rise as: 1) It is a usable OS for Average Joe contrary to Kent's endless rants. 2) More and more people are getting to hear about Linux and can see videos on it being used, and boot from USB and see how Mint is all GUI and not typing lots of commands to get things done. 3) Microsoft abuse reached switch over pain levels driving many techies towards Linux. 4) Ever increasing cost for hardware for both Windows and Mac is forcing people to seek the only affordable alternative. 5) Oh, Valve's work with Proton is also helping as well. People have comfort zones and Windows has been the comfort zone for so long it's the default. But when you have to buy a new laptop for Windows 11 and will have to buy ANOTHER machine for Windows 12 with a NPU... people cannot cope. I know. I'm the one giving them Linux. And very happy they are too. I will now count the minutes until this comment is deleted.
@@adsonn8740 It's already happening. People just CANNOT afford the new hardware for Windows now. And not once - Windows 11 - but twice - NPU powered 12. Besides, since when has choice been a bad thing? Well, answer: When Bill gates used illegal practices to eliminate any and all competition but that's a long story. BTW, I am old. I was there.
Dude, nobody gives a shit. I wonder what would you Linux users do if Windows was not around. You would have to find something else to hate, probably Mac. All you talk about is Windows this, Windows that. Use whatever you like and stop moaning. As for reasons for not using the Linux: 1. Audio quality is shitty, it was always like that and still is 2. Problems with drivers and their quality, because you can't have most of proprietary drivers from manufacturers like in Windows. 3. Lack of professional software for audio and video editing, those you have in Linux is simply not good enough 4. Same goes for programmes like AutoCAD, no good Linux alternative 5. Solving problems can take hours, 90% of people don't have time for this, people have jobs and family and don't want to waste their time 6. The most important: There's no standardization in Linux, you have dozens of distros and desktop environments, no standard for package management solution and many other things. No unification, no strategy and vision for the future how Linux desktop should look.
@@ПрљавиХари Well, this is the Linux hate channel. It's Kent here ranting about Linux! I didn't start it! And people do care because I know they watch the videos by Kent and co, and read the comments and get scared away but.... inaccuracies regarding Linux. I personally do not hate Windows. I like CHOICE. Microsoft eliminated choice. Microsoft FORCED Windows upon us with many an illegal practice. Choice is a bad thing? In regards to Windows... as a technology it's nothing like as bad as it was - but likewise Linux. Only Windows users stay locked in time on Linux and describe it like it was in 1999. Now I am aware of the limitations of Linux and why I do not recommend it for certain use cases. However, for the VSt majority of users, no really, Linux is more than enough and for free. TH-cam creators run studios. they are locked in and cannot use Linux. But the vast majority of people are not running pro-studios. In fact, most users just, and I quote "Do Google." You could give yer average laptop use a Chromebook and they would be happy now. The issue I have is that monopolies lead to abuse and what do we have no from Microsoft? Masses of abuse. Forced hardware upgrades, Recall which is total spaying in a can, massive telelmentry, which cannot be turned off because the next update will override attempts to stop it. Data copied over to OneDrive without consent. Ads in the UI... and it goes on and on. Monopolies are BAAADDDD! I value Linux because it prevents landfill! I also welcome BSD, tho it is not ready for the desktop at all. Unlike Linux with BSD you really DO have to drop the terminal to do critical stuff like install software. Anyway, I like CHOICE! I'd welcome any number of OS's that will do the job. Bring back GEOS! Choice is good! Well, it always used to be. I like choice. That's not a hate thing. That's a pro-thing. And, like I say, the one who is ranting - for the Nth time - is Kent.
I agree that monopoly is bad and availability of choice is good. I also don't hate Linux or Mac OS, unlike most of Linux users who hate Windows religiously. I've used Linux occasionally in the past but switched back to Windows and i am satisfied and will continue using it in the future. It's not about terminal or Linux complexity. Learning terminal is not that hard, I've used Termux on Android and i already knew basics. As for complexity, Gentoo, Arch and Nix OS are not for beginners but you can also learn basics. It's all about lack of professional software and proprietary drivers, problems with screen tearing, audio problems etc. As for Windows, you can remove all bloatware with unattended. xml install and than disable 90% of telemetry with tools like O&O shutup. I have Windows 10 installed on old machine with 4 GB RAM and it's working great. Using 35-40% RAM idling, about 60% under workload. It runs perfectly fine and supports all software that i need. 4 years without reinstall, stable and without any significant problems. That's what most of the people wants.
I use Windows on my workstation, as I need to, all of the software I need is on Windows, but I use Linux on old used ex business laptops and tablets, just for web browsing and youtube watching and just messing about, horses for courses I say, I like Linux, I like Windows, and I also like MacOS.
The part about saying people didn't care about Red Hat killing CentOS is very incorrect... a vast majority of the Linux community back then and STILL to this today hold a huge amount of resentment towards Red Hat for what they did to CentOS
@@KentsTechWorld I'll look for your videos about this. I think I may have tried CentOS once, decades ago, and said to myself, "Ahhh.... none for me, thanks, I'm driving." I didn't really need an Enterprise-grade OS at the time, so that may have influenced my decision. Red Hat yanking the rug out from under CentOS, and their other general nonsense kinda soured me on them a long time ago.
I haven't figured out hows that software suite thingy is related to this. I use for example Visual Studio Code + extensions and Blender + plugins, Google suite and MS Office. It is known that Adobe is limited and that affect about 1% of computer users. That is not related to any OS. It is related to Adobe. I don't see any reason why this would matter. 1% of computer users can choose between Apple and Microsoft, 99% have much more options.
Something being popular doesn't make something the best. For instance in in the 1980s a song called shuddup in yet face was number one for many weeks keeping Ultravox Vienna off the top of the charts. Vienna was clearly a better song. Novelty records always top the charts but not because they are good but because it panders to the less intelligent people in society. The song living next door to Alice reached 35 in Australia when it was originally released and number 3 when re-released in the UK. Then a naff comedian added the words (Alice, Alice, who the fuck is Alice) to the same song and it went to number one. The neanderthal beings in the UK lap that shit up. Never confuse popularity with what is good and not good
being the best, and being the best tool for the job is not the same lol a bad tool can be the best tool for the job. The best tool can be the worst tool for the job. And being popular shows that what ever it is, for that time being is giving people what they want the best. So that it's the fastest, or most stable, or most durable etc but what gives the users what they want the best aka the best tool or tool set for what they need. So it is the best
If I had $5 for every time a linux user told me that I was imagining things about better driver support in windows and "of course, it's proprietary software" I would be rich. Linux users are completely delusional about why linux isn't being adopted on the desktop. It's NOT a better experience, unless you know what you are doing - but that doesn't matter for most users because they don't.
10:15 You using a nonfree mouse affects us because you contribute to the popularity of such mice and therefore nonfree hardware in general, making it harder to find a free one and less likely that a given one (if we don't choose or chose before learning about software freedom) is. One's boss using Word affects that one by creating compatibility issues
Honestly, Arch has been the easiest to use for me. But the big bonus is actively making fun of myself because of the distro I use. Sweet sweet self deprecation.
Been using Arch for 5 years now. It's been pretty solid, only a few issues over that time, was able to fix them all using forums and the Wiki (though it really could use an update and makeover to make it a bit easier to understand).
For the average Joe Linux is considered a 3rd contender if they even know about it compared to Windows and Mac OS. Just talk to anyone who isn't a nerd or geek and ask them about Linux. And people are scared of change, this isn't the same as expecting a person to try a pepsi when they are use to Coke and even then some people will never try pepsi. This doesn't mean they are stupid, they just don't have enough knowledge to make a better decision thats all.
Linux sucks hard as a Desktop Operating System. If operating a computer operating system and burning hours in fixing computer operating system related problems is your hobby, go for it. Everyone else should just stay away.
I've just been battling Windows 11 trying ot help a neighbor with my KDE running laptop. He is stuck with Windows 11 as he has to use ADOBE! But he is quick to agree that my UI is way easier to navigate and fix issues with than Windows 11. I put Xbubtu on his old laptop. He cannot use it now as work requires Adobe products but he hates Windows 11 as it's harder to use than KDE or XFCE. You won;t believe that but tis a fact,
Still watching the video. But if respectfully disagree. It depends on your use case. If you are using your computer for work (in an OS agnostic environment) or just internet/office use, and you do not need applications that has no or poor Linux support, or are not effortlessly used with a Wine GUI. One would generally not have issues on Linux. Generally most people, that have that use case, are not switching because of the inherent friction there is in understanding a new OS, plus the same experience for that use, works fine on windows. So why expend the trouble learning a new tool unless you experience something that really makes you look for something new? I don't know either. But yes. If you use your os for more advanced stuff, especially with applications with bad Linux support, ya in for some tinkering. And there I agree with you.
Well if my windows install runs flawlesly why would i choose a atfom, that will 130% give me problems f?om the get go (nvidia, usb soind blaster external, logitech g29). All this works in windows with extra features and serves my gaming well. I see no sense in switching from windows. Recall and copilot on the other hand i do not want that piece of malware on my win install but Microsoft be like ultimate scumbags. So sooner or later ill be forced to switch, but it wont be anything unix and command line stuff...
@@roklaca3138 Linux is NOT reliant on the command line. This is a persistent and I now hold malicious myth. You may have good reasons for not switching to Linux - though MacOS is BSD so finding another 'not Unix' alternative is going to be interesting for you - but the command line is not one of them. BSD is reliant upon the command line, yes. But Linux is NOT! I use KDE. Installing softare - Discover. Changing settings - System settings with more control and config, and easier to access, than Windows. I know. I was just working with Windows 11. It was easier to hit the router. You can change the font hinting in the KDE GUI. File management - Dolphin. Unless you are using a specialist distro, Linux is command line free. I mention this because it always comes up that Linux is about typing masses of commands to get things done. Yeah, that was true circa 1999. Not so now. Like I say, you can go with what you like but the whole "command line" thing is a fiction, about as true as use of CMD in Windows.
Why are the majority of web servers using Linux as their Os instead of Windows or Mac? Even Microsoft runs Azure on linux becuase its not only the standard but because it has a far better security model that Windows, Windows has a massive attack surface there are many techniques you can use in Windows you can't in any other major OS because of that. Even as mainly Widnows users the security model for Windows has been poor for many years, but it has improved and continues to improve but I would never trust a windows system out of the box compared to a linus system out of the box to run a server explosed to the internet.
There are many reasons but two of the most obvious ones.... Linux is free and servers don't need a GUI. The desktop scene is very different, and that's what's being discussed here. The GUI is important, as is compatibility and market share. Bigger is better. There are too few Linux users to make it a viable desktop option. Additionally, Linux destop GUIs lag way behind the alternatives.
@@toby9999 I think you didn't read the rest of my comments I know it's free but it's also because it's more secure because of it's security model. Windows has a poorer security model that only since Windows XP/NT did it try to made a good faith effort to fix but because of bad security practices becoming commonplace has lead to many programs needing admin access to run.
I met a brain dead Linux user in real life and I threw everything he said in the garbage. Apparently he uses it for his job but over my dead body am I switching to Linux because "WiNdOwS bAd" or some shit like that when Windows 11 24H2 is getting the job done for me and is nice to use imo
Nor should you, Black Cat-san. If you like what you have, it's working for you, and is affordable, why on Earth would you want to change it? If I ever go back to writing ladder logic for PLCs I'll likely have to use a Windows XP machine with a serial port. (I have two such laptops in my reserve pile...) Um... If you've not seen the old black & white movie _Kuroneko_ you probably should. Good stuff. Typical crazy ending, though.
well, I made it through the whole video and I have to say it sounds like a skill issue and that’s pretty much it it sounds like you missed the entire point of Linux and that’s fine Linux requires patience and understanding and people that are not lazy and want to learn but then the same thing is applied for windows we all had to learn windows at one point and people had to learn macOS as well so yeah, definite skill issue. Now the good part is this video is gonna go down in Linux meme history as the biggest skill issue on the Internet. Anyway, have fun.
Linux is a tool that serves people not an end unto itself. The minute another tool serves people better. Linux should be dropped like a hot potato. I am way too invested in learning some other things to give Linux the band it requires . Linux would not be a good tool for me.
skill issue :D dude I am using linux everyday and have been for over 20 years. there is a massive different between having the skill to do something, and needing to use it or wanting to use it if it should not be needed. I am also a trained car mechanic, so by your logic I could be okay with cars that break down, and need repairs all the time, cos I have the skills and should not complain :O Go look at my backlog and you will see plenty of "learning" videos, maybe some could help you out
40 minutes to say "MUH PRAGMATISM! I'M ACKTHUALLY SMARTER THAN YOU!" This rant was all edge no point, 2/10. No enlightening takes can be gained from it.
MacOS is the best until you want free software. Linux is best until you need to use Adobe software, play certain games, or make money selling software. Windows is worst until you, well, want free paid software, play all kind of games, basically do anything.
Linux is clearly superior to windows 11. Windows 11 is a polished turd, there isn't a thing on this world that would make me go back from Arch + Kde to Windows 11 . History show in all market, that people will move to a better thing if it's out there. That's how VLC, audacity, OBS etc took over other not so good paid tools for creators on windows. OBS is the best example. before that many used paid bad product, and then people started to talk about OBS and it delivered in a great way, and it did no marketing or "forced" people in to use it. All it did was providing a better product! So yes people will move to a better product if it's out there. They do all the time. Oh and back before OBS, we where all told and "forced" to use other tools as it was what the big timers use etc. I could make a video hours long with examples about this happening in all markets and not just OBS and tech

Linux works for me.
non.
Its not because they're weighing the cost of Windows vs somethoing else. They're not even considering "something else." Do you honestly think most Linux users are running it because they can't afford something else? PUH-leeeze!"
There's a bit to unpack here so let's address that last point first. Cost is certainly a factor for me, but there are other factors that really swung the decision, too, among them _reliability._
If, as you imply, the price of an operating system is not a concern for you, all I can say is it must be nice to make enough money that you feel you can afford to waste it on Windows and its attendant baggage. Me? I grew up in the Projects, in a single parent situation. Most of my life I struggled to make ends meet, to provide for my family, and to just live as best I could. When I got to the point I could afford better, I chose _what I had already found to be better for my use case - Linux._
I have been and still am an A+ since 2003.
I think this guy must be isolated even from windows community.
nope they like me just fine, so do the Mac and pro linux people :D the only people that don't like me are hubby tech people :) but I will go and ask my it and dev coworkers if I am isolated lmao.
Well, he certainly has a unique point of view... but I don't hate him for it. Let him keep underestimating us...
EVERY thing just works in Linux now. Stuff not working is ancient history.

3 2 1... watch out Kent, they're in the trees!
(Systemd is a Red Hat product, man.)
I tell folks about Linux mainly when they see my systems and ask about what they are running. A few of them have switched, mainly on the basis of the merits. Some of them have switched back. We're still friends.
I agree wholeheartedly with you about all the anger lately - it's like there's something in the water. I get angry, too -- I'm only human. I do try to keep it real, though.
Good to see you are still angry! I thought after using MacOS you will come down a little, but cleatly you didn't have your Mac bricked yet!
beautiful, the truth hurts, but it is necessary.
"'Whuts teh difference beetweeen u and me?"
Im seeeting on my ballsack.
I mention Linux and people go "What?"
When I show, they are amazed.
I hold that Linux is on the rise as:
1) It is a usable OS for Average Joe contrary to Kent's endless rants.
I will now count the minutes until this comment is deleted.
lol nothing is going to change realistically, and you're not going to see that huge bump in linux market share that you hope for unfortunately.
The part about saying people didn't care about Red Hat killing CentOS is very incorrect... a vast majority of the Linux community back then and STILL to this today hold a huge amount of resentment towards Red Hat for what they did to CentOS
you did not see many videos about it.
that was what I was talking about.
1% of computer users can choose between Apple and Microsoft, 99% have much more options.
i don't think the CC got the word "turd" right a single time.
I am triggered! What follows is my 12 part dissertation on why Linux is the best operating system, bar none:
Just kidding.
Never confuse popularity with what is good and not good
being the best, and being the best tool for the job is not the same lol
a bad tool can be the best tool for the job.
Most used operating system client side is Android.
Even Linus Torvalds said that he is sad that his main goal (which is the Desktop OS) in trying to get Linux as a proper Desktop OS has failed.
(I have two such laptops in my reserve pile...)
