I NEVER COMMENT but I am blown away by this remarkably executed, PERFECT video! Everything from the snare rim beat, to the overall jam topped off with phenomenal tuning! DAMN!
Mick Hudsin thank you so much Mick! We wanted to get all those snares sounding as close to each other as possible and you make it worthwhile. Appreciate your comments, we hope you’ll consider subscribing if you haven’t already. Many more quality videos will be coming down the pipeline like this in the not too distant future.

I thought the Catalina Mahogany sounded best on my crappy phone speakers and then I listened on my monitors and I still think it sounds the best. That is a nice drum.
This was a tough choice. I had to listen to it three times and I seem to like different ones each time but in the end I say the Brooklyn steel and the limited addition copper for the win
Thank you for sharing this video! This is an EXCELLENT example of less is more in my humble opinion. I thought the Chrome over STEEL sounded much better than the Chrome over BRASS! I was also very impressed with the Renown and Black Copper!
I've been contemplating buying this snare over the last few days. I tried it out in the music store and couldn't believe the sound and feel of it. Considering the standard snare that came with my Gretsch Catalina Maple kit of 7 years just broke, I think it's time.
Is that a good snare for rock? I'm trying to figure out a snare to go with a renown shell kit. I'm a guitar player and my son plays the drums. I'm wanting to upgrade what we have to something we could take on stage... and of course I play gretsch guitars lol just curious on opinions
Cool video! Is the Gretsch Renown an 8 or 10 lug drum? I've seen it advertised and it looks like an 8 lug, but this video looks like a 10 lug. Maybe it's been updated?
WOW! I never expected the Copper piece to be that dry and really useful. Also, I never expected the hammared brass snare to sound like that, it's like the snare bed just dont really follow what's goin on up there:/
@@ivannio5836 you'll find very subtle differences in sound sometimes when comparing snare drums using the exact same heads and tuning. Much of the difference can be felt when playing and tuning and also impacts the drum's ability to project and hold it's tuning.
This is a great way to audition snares! Please do more! Seamless editing. Accurate tuning. Nailed it.

Excellent comparison video! Thank you doing that.
It’s amazing how dry the copper snare is after hearing the drums before it. What a difference!

That's definitely a nice drum, the Catalina series has always been a great sound at a very reasonable price! Glad you like it!
Mahogany is an awesome wood for drums. Old mahogany Premier drums sound incredible when fitted with good modern skins.
Great video. I could clearly hear the differences, I think it wasn't so processed in the mix, and it was fun to see.
It shows how good Gretsch snares are.
Unfortunately my favourite Gretsch bronze wasn’t here,
It’s absolutely brilliant.
Thanks for the comment Roy. Wish we could have included the bronze in there, but we shot with what we had in stock at the time.

Good choice... that copper drum is a firecracker and the steel's got a great, bright/smooth tone!

Great video. I'm the proud owner of a 6.5 x14 chrome over brass brooklyn.

Hey, great observation. You're correct, those were both 10-lugs in the video!

Gretsch make the best steel snares..
Thanks a lot for great demo :)
You’re welcome Ivan!
Funny how the Catalina and the Brooklyn 5,5" sounds alike. In my ears...at least ;) I like the Renown maple too

@@DanielDossey Thanks for your reply. I do understand your point. Sound alone says nothing about how it feels to play the actual snares.
@@ivannio5836 exactly!
6.5 hammered brass! does it all and does it all very nicely 👌
You can say that again!
@@RuppsDrumsDenver 6.5 hammered brass! does it all and does it all very nicely 👌
Renown sounds the best to my ears, but to each their own.
The Brooklyn Steel sounded the most versatile, and the Maple Renown was nice as well. The Copper was very controlled.
Pfff they all sound great!
Rrrriiiight?!?!
What heads are you using on these and are they the same..?
They weren’t all the exact same heads, but they were all coated single-ply heads tuned to approximately the same pitch. Hope this helps!
beginning sounds like Smashing Pumpkins
Brooklyn. Brass for the win
Where’s the USA CUSTOM BRONZE.
It’s fabulous..!
I would to hear them with kick and hat instead the rim tick
Thanks for the comment Lamont. We'll be doing more of these in the future and will likely play on hats instead of the rim.
Isn’t it ouvbious. The big Brooklyn brass non hammered. I hate the hammer effect. All the other snares were either too blah or too high and bright
That IS a sweet, SWEET drum!
I agree... I hated the hammered. Personally I loved the copper.
Does the beat remind anyone else of I Miss You by Blink 182?
Ha! Yeah, it definitely does. Good ear.
Aluminum
Amen! So tasty.
Thanks very much for this.....but do we have to have the click? A bit distracting.
