Just a small correction, Stellar tera type doesnt make the pokemon have no weakness, it actually doesnt change your typings at all, and it just provides a damage boost for the moves you use, being a purely offensive focused tool. It also makes it so Tera Blast becomes stronger, and hits everything for neutral damage and terastalized mons for weakness
it also drops your sp.a and attack when you use Tera Blast, the first Tera Blast used has a pseudo-STAB boost at around 1.2× and the general damage boost only applies to the first move used of said type; status moves are exempted from this rule, if the type of the move matches your pre-tera type it get's a 2× boost compare to the standard 1.2× boost and it works completely different for terapagos, honestly I don't blame him for being wrong you need a fucking PHD to understand the mechanic....... still a bad mechanic in the games btw, too gimmicky
added bit it provides a 20% damage (stab moves do 2x instead of 1.5x and doesn’t get the 20% boost) boost to all moves but only for that type once and tera blast stellar goes from 80 to 100 base power and when you use it, it lowers your attack and sp attack by one stage
Additionally, since the boost is small and there are no defensive benefits, it pretty universally sucks. It's viable on maybe 2-3 pokemon in singles and pretty much none in doubles (barring terapagos itself). So, it's an accurate translation that the cards are terrible too at least.

Excellent production quality right out the gate great work! 3:16 stellar tera mons do not change their weaknesses in game. Thank you for making this, you've put to words (and video) my issues with Tera as a mechanic. It felt like a weird pointless tag for like, a whole year, and only now when they're about to move onto the next gimmick do they start printing support cards for the tag. I hate this mechanic, because I just built a deck entirely about spreading dmg wide on the bench. But now there's just a random layer of defense with 0 investment that I can't even play around.
keep up with the good work mate!!! ur style is so cool and u're full of charisma good video (and i agree 100% with the points u made, god i wish teras made more sense... theyre rlly beautiful tho)
Correction: you say that there are only two Tera Pokémon with Support/Bench Abilities (one of which barely counts) but you actually show another: Skeledirge; it's Incendiary Song does not require it to be in your Active slot. Also, I feel it would have been worth also mentioning other upside(s) of having a Type and Attack Energy Mismatch: the ability to hit Weaknesses for massive damage you otherwise wouldn't be able to and/or to change your Weakness so you aren't weak to your opponent's big threat.
True, true. I did gloss over skeledirge since his support is damage based and I was more-so talking about energy accel. and draw power, but you're right. I also agree with your second point, and I do bring up that the type changes throw a wrench into weaknesses, which I do like.
No way you only have this many subs. You’ve definitely been making content for a long time this video is too perfect. Idk who you are but you’re amazing!
Great take and entertaining delivery. I will say, as someone who's played a good bit of Hydreigon, that Hydreigon's "stellar" attack (the one that requires 3 different energies) b/c it actually CAN get 2 knockouts by sniping two single prizers BUT he has a solid 2-energy attack that he can use most of the time. You don't typically need to build around one attack or the other since they are both useful at different stages in the match.
Love the video! You make a really good point about the Tera rulebox. It doesn't seem crazy game changing in most matchups, but overall I think it's a decent, fun gimmick that doesn't necessarily HAVE to be game changing and can just kinda be there for those random opportunities where it does come into play (maybe you retreat a Tera with like 30 hp left onto the bench and then it's protected, forcing your opponent to require gusting). And I think like you pointed out at the end, the main appeal behind Teras is the unique typing combinations that develop, especially with the newest set of Stellar Pokémon that use 3 different types of energy, which I think is just really cool. It'll be interesting to see how Teras continue to develop especially once all the Sword and Shield era seta rotate out in March, thus losing all Vstar abilities and such.
The think the intentions of the game designers for the Tera mechanic's bench blocking ability is as a way for the designers to print strong bench sniping attackers that don't need a card like Manaphy in the format, and in everyone's decks as a mandatory one of, to keep it in check from destroying the standard format like greninja and regidrago+kyurem would without it. While putting the effect on only fully evolved pokemon is puzzling, I think that is done to promote a quick pace of gameplay as the strong bench sniping attackers in G block on all either only hit one target or have limitations set in place to hit more than one target like weird energy costs and or are put on a stage 2. Also the issue you brought up with the big basic pokemon not needing the protection from sniping isn't true in expanded, which still sees a lot of play in Japan, and cards like Terapagos in theory can slow down or even outright stop Alolan Raichu otk, a solid meta call deck, from functioning, which in some cases can even be better than a universal check like Manaphy because the Tera trait can't be shut off like bench barrier can. Fantastic video, I'm excited to see more. Keep it up!

Tera from the start should have the gimmick of always acting as 1 type on defense, but 2 types on offense. That Dark Charizard for example should act as a Dark type on defense, but when attacking, it should be considered Fire and Dark type. Is this that interesting? No, but it shows how much of an afterthought Teras really are because this idea was pulled out of my ass while watching this vid and it’s better than the official gimmick.
@ because that’s how it works in the video game. In the games, even if you change your type via Tera, your Pokemon still gets the Same Type Attack Bonus on moves that are native to its type. So back to Charizard. If it Tera’s into a dark type, it essentially has 3 STABs being Fire, Flying, and Dark.
@@monte_2000 yes but you're still attacking with 1 attack per turn Making teras attack for 2 types will just buff them without a real reason and create some wierd interactions in the meta
@@sammalatesta1325 I actually didn’t know that teras protect you from your own attacks until I made this video, and I’ve also had that exact thought. I’d love to see a super powerful attacker that damages one of your own guys and instead gets negated by tera. Still jank but a cool idea.
This is soooo well made, kudos to you, I always enjoy watching this kind of rant videos about the design of cards (mostly about yugioh since that has been my niche for a few years now) special since I coming back to pokemon tcg after being away for some time Hope you post more content eventually :D
I believe the predecessor of the Tera Pokémon was the delta species, mostly switched type pokemon with a ton of cool mechanics from the EX era, two decades ago.
Yeah, Tera is a weird thing to lean into. I liked it a lot because the video games make amazing use of surprise Teras for offensive or defensive reasons, and I miss Delta pokémon mixing up the types a bit. But like you said, since Stellar isn't treated as anything really in the TCG, most of the stellar buff cards have just been buffs to normal or Tera pokémon, basically just targeting archetypes that are already popular. Unrelated, I also really enjoy building weird "grass" types to beat up dark charizard. Good times.
Related(I only thought of this after) to the Stellar energy attacks problem is how Dragon type has been treated in the TCG. I get it, Dragons are strong in the VGC already, and pokémon definitely does not want more types. But Dragons being basically no-weakness no-resistance pokémon with unusable attacks makes them suck way more than they need to be, until they added Regidrago because he suddenly made the disadvantage of multiple types moot. With a little help from Ogerpon.
I would have actually loved to see more mechanics closer to the games. Firstly in the game the Stellar type does not work as a real type; it does not alter your type. It's more like a modifier giving you a small boost on all types, but only once per type. Stellar blast lets you use Stellar as a type which is super effective against Terastalized Pokemon. I wish that the Stellar type would be the anti Tera mechanic that punishes overuse of Tera Pokemon. How I would like to see Tera Pokemon interpreted is to have basic Pokemon with a Tera type and then you evolve to an ex which inherits the type and weakness. Let's say you want to play a basic Ogerpon ex, then you can attach a tool that Terastalizes the card with no evolutions, maybe giving a bonus ability in Ogerpon's case. This makes you reconsider your deckbuilding choices and might put you in a bad spot if you have too wide of a type pool.
Clicked for the Tera slander, subbed for the great commentary and googly eyes. If I had a nickel for every game I lost by forgetting you can’t attack benched Tera’s…
Love this video- Just wanted to mention a correction on stellar type in the video game- they retain the same weaknesses they had without the terastallization (trading type change for a one type boost in damage to each of your moves… some people make use of it in VGC, a lot of people think it’s fairly subpar) which is probably why the cards also retain weaknesses with meh feelings
this was a really well made video! I know almost nothing about pokemon, being more of a magic the gathering fan, but this might get me interested into trying a game or two!
I feel like they're making the ex's and stuff kind of disappointing and just bringing the exciting stuff back later in the generation, kind of how a lot of people didn't like VMAX's but the VSTAR's were really cool. Maybe the trainer's pokemon coming back will make the ex's and maybe even terastalized pokemon more exciting. Plus, with legends Z-A in the future there could be sets about MEGA EVOLUTION coming back 🗣🔥🔥 Anyway, I'll just stick with my larimar rain shenanigans for now. Excellent video, you deserve more subs :O
I also would like to hear your opinion on the HP and damage bloat on the current format. Like, why should Conkeldurr hit for 250 when non-ex stage 2 mons only have 180 HP max
i'm coming here from the tcg pocket and I just gotta say. Since when the fuck was 180 damage with not only no downside but also the chance for more damage a 2 energy cost attack. Sheesh the powercreep has gone crazy
THATS MY BIGGEST GRIPE Mewtwo and charizard tera are on my death list I hate how fast a game goes. AND so many people use these decks (sorry im talking about TCG Live for context) it makes the game feel so boring.
I cant tell if the googly eyes are 3D or real. But it has to be 3D, but the rigging required is amazing to me if so. Either way its so fun, and thank you for bringing quality and IQ into discussing Pokemon cards. Ppl are starving for originality.
Turning every Pokemon into a crystal chandelier got visually tiring very quick. As someone who these days plays only very casually and mostly collects, I find these variants super lame compared to mega evolutions, delta species, dark Pokemon and even Vmax.

Is this that interesting? No, but it shows how much of an afterthought Teras really are because this idea was pulled out of my ass while watching this vid and it’s better than the official gimmick.
Why should they count as more than 1 type? Makes no sense and just adds random weakness interactions
@@monte_2000 yes but you're still attacking with 1 attack per turn
Making teras attack for 2 types will just buff them without a real reason and create some wierd interactions in the meta
@ correct, but the theme of the mechanic is still intact. There’s no way to make the mechanic be completely 100% from the games.
@@kingt1954 idk why you're stessin bro. You must be new because Pokemon have been able to attack as multiple types before. Look up Hoopa V.
I like this format of video, please make more, you’ve earned my sub
I think there could be some interesting decks with the protection from damage from your own Pokemons attacks
@@sammalatesta1325 I actually didn’t know that teras protect you from your own attacks until I made this video, and I’ve also had that exact thought. I’d love to see a super powerful attacker that damages one of your own guys and instead gets negated by tera. Still jank but a cool idea.
Hell yeah, love all these new tcg channels, feel like not nearly enough talk about actually playing the game
please make more. omg. it's so good. I can't get enough.
This is soooo well made, kudos to you, I always enjoy watching this kind of rant videos about the design of cards (mostly about yugioh since that has been my niche for a few years now) special since I coming back to pokemon tcg after being away for some time
Hope you post more content eventually :D
Keep up the good work this video was really fun to watch!
Thank you puppet man, I have left this video more knowledgeable about the TCG than before I had watched this video.
BANGER. Love this make more videos RIGHT NOW
I believe the predecessor of the Tera Pokémon was the delta species, mostly switched type pokemon with a ton of cool mechanics from the EX era, two decades ago.
This video is outstanding! S-tier production quality.
best pokémon video i’ve watched in a long long whike
I love Tag Merchant as the term for support cards for a specific tag.
SPLATOON SIDE ORDER MUSIC!!!
This makes you reconsider your deckbuilding choices and might put you in a bad spot if you have too wide of a type pool.
great vid for such a low sub channel you earned a sub!
as someone who just got in to tcg collection and havent really touched the actual game this was a very enjoying video to watch.
Imma be real I only realized Tera pokemon were different to ex pokemon when I tried to use a Glass trumpet with a Venusaur Ex in play.
Would watch more videos like this about pokemon tcg
i love the animation so much. the googly eyes really add to it
This video was an absolute banger, thank you for providing unique and meaningful content to out community!
Clicked for the Tera slander, subbed for the great commentary and googly eyes. If I had a nickel for every game I lost by forgetting you can’t attack benched Tera’s…
Your editing is unreal - quality vid!
Love this video-
Just wanted to mention a correction on stellar type in the video game- they retain the same weaknesses they had without the terastallization (trading type change for a one type boost in damage to each of your moves… some people make use of it in VGC, a lot of people think it’s fairly subpar) which is probably why the cards also retain weaknesses with meh feelings
Really great work here. Absolutely poised to dominate
So... you're saying, it's a TERA-ble idea from the devs?
this was a really well made video! I know almost nothing about pokemon, being more of a magic the gathering fan, but this might get me interested into trying a game or two!
side order lobby music is so fire 🔥🔥
The 'labels' are usually referred to as traits (ancient trait, tera trait, etc.)
Plus, with legends Z-A in the future there could be sets about MEGA EVOLUTION coming back 🗣🔥🔥
Anyway, I'll just stick with my larimar rain shenanigans for now. Excellent video, you deserve more subs :O
Dude this is awesome! Def earned a sub :)
this video rocks, liking and commenting and all that jazz to feed the algorithm monster
I knew i needed to subscribe the moment a saw you eyes!
I will continue to watch any Pokémon TCG content you do.
I love your lil cutout avatar guy
Lost zone enjoyers eating good
I also would like to hear your opinion on the HP and damage bloat on the current format. Like, why should Conkeldurr hit for 250 when non-ex stage 2 mons only have 180 HP max
YES. THANK YOU.
i'm coming here from the tcg pocket and I just gotta say. Since when the fuck was 180 damage with not only no downside but also the chance for more damage a 2 energy cost attack. Sheesh the powercreep has gone crazy
THATS MY BIGGEST GRIPE
Mewtwo and charizard tera are on my death list I hate how fast a game goes. AND so many people use these decks (sorry im talking about TCG Live for context) it makes the game feel so boring.
Love the content, you rock my man!
WOW AN ACTUAL PTCG VIDEO!
AND NOT JUST ANOTHER UNBOXING VIDEO
Dude keep up the work.
So frraking good for a ptcg video
Wow what a cool video on a topic im interested in, I wonder what other content this creator has made!
The quiet gorilla: ....
I cant tell if the googly eyes are 3D or real. But it has to be 3D, but the rigging required is amazing to me if so. Either way its so fun, and thank you for bringing quality and IQ into discussing Pokemon cards. Ppl are starving for originality.
Wow fantastic video! Great job
YOUR CHANNEL IS AMAZING!!!😀👍
Love the video dude, more Pokemon tcg content in the future?
Loved the style, keep explaining me random stuff
Great video, please make more!
Good video
I feel like not enough people talk about the GAME aspect of the Pokémon tcg
Turning every Pokemon into a crystal chandelier got visually tiring very quick.
As someone who these days plays only very casually and mostly collects, I find these variants super lame compared to mega evolutions, delta species, dark Pokemon and even Vmax.
i hate Charizard ex and it should be deleted
i love Galvantula ex and it deserves more love
this isn't usually my type of video, and i cant say I've watched many tcg related content- but the production quality is insane and your personality kept me. great video.
i subscribed five seconds into the video because i loved the funny eyed paper guy
