Having been raised Mormon, it’s always fun for me to relive the church history from someone who actually knows their shit. But what struck a major chord with me is Matt’s point that since the reformation, the idea is “humans are instinctually good and by showing them they can be good, they can be gods as you” is something I have held onto for a very long time. Call it programming, but even since leaving the church, I have lived a life of believing the best in everyone, despite the legitimacy that people are always selfish in a capitalist culture.

There was a fantastic thesis in there about calvinism and the anxiety about being as visibly 'Christian' as possible to ensure going to heaven (and the whole secular disenchantment with the world where religion was taken out as a community thing and made into a personal relationship with god), that makes a very compelling story about how the separation of church and state meant something very sinister in relation to capital. I have probably not made much sense but you get the drift. Does anyone have a good reading that goes over this point and the history?

Matt has been dropping new tracks about the 30 Years’ War. He discusses the broad causes and effects of that conflict, going into greater detail on the development of Protestantism (including Calvinism and its characteristics in particular). The tensions of reformation fed the conflict, developing into one of the most destructive wars in European history. The war concluded with the peace of Westphalia, redefining the relationship between the rulers and the ruled, laying the foundation for our modern concept of the nation state, paving the way for the development of Capitalism.
      Highly recommend

I moved to Utah recently to help my mom and the mormons have been really nice for the most part. They DEFINETELY have a community here. I told one neighbor 4 houses down why I came and the next day my mom's across the street neighbor showed up with flowers wishing my mom well. One thing about Utah though is they have the WORST drivers. I want you to imagine the most selfish drivers, and they are probably 1.2 times more selfish. For example I turned left the other day, I had a green light, so the opposite direction driving straight is red. The guy ran a red light. You will see stuff like that all the time. I am in awe of how selfish they are here.

The IRS was going to yank the LDS tax exempt/deductible status. The Carter administration was pissed about church money flowing illegally to anti-ERA legislative campaigns in Florida (failed FL senate by one vote). Prohibiting blacks in the priesthood was the other issue. Prophet Spencer W. Kimball revealed that blacks were no longer cursed by God as Canaanites in 1977, so the church kept its tax breaks.

It interesting that you’re criticizing other people for not providing arguments when you don’t do it yourself. You seem to dislike Matt’s analysis and say he’s wrong but don’t provide an actual explanation or counterargument against it.
The closest you get is the “strawman” point. Matt has a Masters degree in specializing in historical materialism. His pop history work is specifically 101 version of that lense. Go into any graduate level course on Earth and you’ll be taught and expected to use exactly this analysis (among others). Historical materialism specifically says that all personal characteristics, morality, and virtue in history are irrelevant. The main drivers of history is economic conditions, and every single politician and important figure in human history is just an avatar representing that economy. Random chance and circumstances still play a role, but only secondary to the economy. Personal values and ideology are irrelevant. When it comes to religion, you treat them all anthropologically. The same way you’d treat the ancient Sumerian and Egyptians Gods. They’re all just myths and their main interest is just about how they came from and evolved with the economic system. Ex. The first Sumerian cities forming around the richest citizens who claimed to be able to speak to the Gods and lead are priest-kings.
The ‘materialism is too reductionist and undervalues the role of individual leaders and virtue’ argument is just as old as materialism itself. I assume that’s what you mean by “strawman” and “condescending”. Whig and religious people especially get triggered by it. But like I said, historical materialism is incredibly fundamentally to modern academia. Originally it was just one of many lenses (ex feminist, racial, liberal). But now it’s so ingrained in academics it forms half of “modernism”. Acting indignant and confused about it is like going to a philosophy class and being confused about utalitarianism. Again, everything Matt says here is just a basic bitch 101 analysis you’d get if you read any grad level materialist. Getting offended by it and calling it “against historical facts” means you’d also dislike all modern academia.
The rest is just criticism of the podcast production itself, not the analysis. And yeah, that’s the point of Inebriated Past. For proper podcasts he gets help to make it more entertaining, but Inebriated Past is the low effort rough content that he can make fast and quick for those interested enough in Matt summarizing grad level materialism even if it’s done in a boring and lazy way. On their Patreon they make that clear, but you probably just stumbled onto TH-cam so I don’t blame you for not knowing.
