  • Here's a second finger pick comparison video for all of you banjo nuts out there. I decided to make another video comparing my favorite picks that are available right now since many of the picks in my previous comparison aren't readily available to purchase.

Great review, Gabe! Just wanted to say that I would encourage you (and any banjo, dobro, pedal steel, or fingerstyle guitar player that wears fingerpicks) to check out Landis fingerpicks. Ron Landis is a master metal engraver that is well-known in the coin world and has been making top-shelf fingerpicks for a few years now. They have an awesome teeth-like texture on the inside that really grips your fingers, perfect for sweaty banjo hands like mine. I love my Hoffmeyers, Yates, and other picks, and think we should have lots of options in our toolbox, but I can say that Landis picks are my go-to for every situation. You can look up his website and check then out - order a set of his standard designs risk free with a money back guarantee. Anyway, just wanted to spread the awareness, they're great picks that we should all get to try!

Thanks. I’m just starting. My fingers are small and dry and cold, without fingerprints. Just keeping the picks on is challenging. I’ll keep testing out new picks.

Nonsense! You sound great. These videos of yours just led me to find out about The Lonely Heartstring Band and Full Cord. So thank you for these pick comparisons and for putting out some great music!

Cobalt BP Picks are worth a try & they have several different options to choose from. They have the standard "pre USA National" style. They have a variation without the bottom hole to prevent breaking & they have a style very similar to the Shelors but nickel silver with cobalt plating. I actually just got off the phone with Bob Perry & I'll be test driving two variations of his picks in just a couple days. I'll be comparing them to my Showcase 1941's made by Bill Stokes. After I was unable to use my old Nationals anymore, the 41's were my go to picks. Now that they are no longer available, I'm looking for my new go to pick. I'll come back to this video & drop a comment with my results. Gabe has given me several options to choose from & my search may take a while. lol

Update: The Cobalt BP's are the REAL DEAL!!!!!!! They are as comfortable as a set of the stainless steel Shelor's but produce the tone of nickel silver National style picks we've all come to love. I played two live sets at The String Bean Memorial festival. I used the BP's on the first set & my old standby Showcase 41's on the later. The tone was pretty well identical. The only issue I had was missing strings from playing too aggressively. The cobalt plating makes the picks fly right off the strings. lol This is something that I'll have to get used to, but the adjustment will also be very good for me. It will make me play lighter & with more accuracy therefore, I will pull better tone & get better economy of finger motion. It's a win/win in my book!!!!!!!

Hi Gabe, I just found your video after going down the banjo pick rabbit hole with MIchael Sumner at Midwest Banjo Camp 2021. I struggle with pick noise, and discovered that the SS picks are too thick and too big for my small fingers. I was looking for finger picks that were thinner in gauge that would be ideal for smaller hands. Thanks for the discussion. #banjonerds

Thanks for the comparison, Gabe! I've used and loved the Hoffmeyers for a while, but now I want to get all of them! How do you feel about the slightly cheaper 1941s? I've used those for the brighter sounds, but maybe the Dotsons or the Shelors would work as a high-end alternative to those?

I like the 1941’s, but I believe they are no longer being produced unfortunately. I think any of these picks would be a could replacement.

Chad K The Showcase 41's were the closest thing to the old Nationals that I could find, but sadly, they are no longer available. I'd say any of the sets featured on this video are good candidates or Gabe wouldn't be wasting his time with them. I'm trying out a couple sets of Cobalt BP's in a few days. Bob Perry is a less known maker, but several well known banjo players are using his picks. Rob McCoury, Jesse Baker, Dale Perry to name just a few. We'll see how well they perform next to my trusty 41's.

@@Crossing_Rivers I sincerely appreciate your offer, but I recently bought a set of "Cobalt BP Power Picks". Once I got them shaped to my fingers & within a day, they were performing FAR beyond my expectations. I foresee myself using the BP's for as long as I can get them.

I keep going back to my “Roy’s Own” picks. I do have the Yates 8s. The Roy’s have that little bit of “grab” on the strings that I like. Not a fan of picks that glide over the strings.

I tried a set that a friend had around the time they first became available and I didn’t like the wide round blade shape or the spikes inside the band. Since then he’s come out with a more standard blade shape that I feel might be more my vibe, but I found the spikes to be irritating to my cuticles.

Wow! I was seriously looking for just some advice about picks because I’m new to Banjo playing. I recently bought a used Epiphone and the rolls and the G being where it is, it’s really tough for me. Especially after being a well below average guitar strummer since I was a kid. Hearing you sample the picks kinda discouraged me. I know it takes a lot of practice and I really am putting in the practice and learning time. I want to at least be able to make the banjo sound half way pleasant. I really must be horrible with hand coordination because it’s about week 4 or 5 and I’m really lacking in any progress of what is probably supposed to be normal. I’ve decided to go to my area’s local bluegrass legend to begin lessons. I really hope it helps because I don’t really have the money to make the weekly drive, not to mention the cost of each lesson. I love the sound of the banjo. I even like the sound of my low-end banjo and I’m sure it’s not close to the standards of a pro like you. Well, even though I’m not getting far with playing and understanding the banjo, I’m very eager to get it out for my slow going basic rolls practice. Thanks for the video. You are blessed with some super talent my friend. 😊
