😅The ghost part is great. I have not done microscopic photos but I did have a project of making b&w reversal slides from pictures in a book and other photos for school. The process for reversal was fun but scary, when you had to expose the film to light and then put it back in the can to finish processing I was always nervous. 😂

Format snobbery was rife in editorial work. There were numerous colour magazines on every subject under the sun, all in need of photographs, and pretty much all of them wanted roll film slide shots. Of course, 35mm was good enough for the Sunday Times colour supplement and other high end publications, but not for hobby magazines in W H Smith. The real reason for this is picture editors couldn't be bothered walking over to a lightbox and looking through a loupe, even if they owned such things. They wanted to sit in their chair and hold the slide up to the nearest window. This lead to the popularity of 6 x 4.5cm cameras, which roughly matched an A4 page, and were less expensive than 6 x 6 and larger 120 versions. You could buy slide mounts in every conceivable mask, including square cropped to A4 shape, which saved buying a prism head. Or just give the picture editor a square for them to crop, which they did anyway.
Larger cameras lasted longer in the press pack than they needed to, and you can find 1960s films of photographers using 35mm, various 120 and even large format press cameras. Picture editors simply didn't trust photographers to be able to compose a shot, and would often print from a tiny segment of the negative. This attitude lead to the establishment of Magnum agency, where highly regarded photographers could market their photographs as they were intended to be seen.

35mm negatives could be duped to 6x6 format.

@@arricammarques1955 Yes they could, but editorial photography for hobby magazines was not a big payer, and the cost of duplication would have been uneconomic.

My dad had a Puch Alpine scooter in the 1960ies. (Puch was an Austrian brand) I got one a few years ago to restore but I'm only half through it, TBH. Puch branded things are quite expensive here, the nostalgia factor, mainly. Everyone knows someone who had a scooter, a motorbike or a moped of that brand or had one themselves. Good memories and thanks for another interesting video!

Thank you Peter for sharing! It’s always great to hear your photographic Journeys. I have used many medium format systems, I will say for all of my printing needs, 6x6 has been perfect, I can print a square up to 24x24 and a 13x19 by cropping and the results are still superb. I have obtained these results with the Rolleiflex 2.8D, Hasselblad 500 C/M and Bronica SQ-A.

What a great raconteur you are Mr Elgar , I had a real bad do tonight and your stories cheered me up and settled me down at the same time. I remember in the 1980s someone showed me Polaroid B&W reversal film, I had a go of it and thought it was great. Unfortunately they discontinued it, I'd love to shoot it today, so easy to develop as well. As they say on my planet, live long and prosper , and I'm doing the wave but you can't see me. Best wishes Jake E.
