    That's absolutely insane that Uro is the #2 best Simic card ever printed in the 28 year history of the game, after just 12 months.

      Uro is just so damn broken. Ramp decks have 3 main weaknesses: losing tempo, running out of card and not drawing ramp pay offs.
      Uro literally fixed all these problem. Sure you’re still losing tempo playing Uro, but at least he gains you life, and a top decked Uro late game is +6 healing, which is significant vs burn/aggro. He draws you card so you don’t run out of stuff to play after you ramped. Then Uro himself is a ramp pay off when you recast him.

    • @09Dragonite
      @09Dragonite 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      What's funnier though is the #1 which would have gone COMPLETELY unnoticed as a card if Uro had never been printed. Uro singlehandedly upheld the conditions necessary for people to even play cards such as Growth Spiral in formats outside of standard. Sure, it is instant speed Explore, but how many decks even run Explore right now other than Titan? And it only had more points because it saw play in Simic Flash just before Uro and Oko were even printed. Good grief 😂

      @@09Dragonite Growth spiral was heavily played before Uro came around, and was banned in it's own right. It's a very good card too-instant speed matters.

      @@09Dragonite Except that Growth Spiral was being played before Throne of Eldraine. The Simic dominance started when Hydroid Krasis was printed and added to the black-green mid-range decks to make Wet Golgari. They eventually just dropped the black and made full on Simic when things like Nissa, Who Breaks the Game was printed.

    When Growth Spiral was spoiled, I was blown away/impressed by the art more than anything. My initial thoughts on playabillity: it was just a harder to cast Explore, so not as good. But then I realized it was at instant speed, and it had blue in it's cost, so it would probably see some good play. Even then, I really underestimated how strong this card was, even though I liked it as a pet card in a lot of my budget decks.
    Sure, it's not as strong as Uro or Oko (whos bannings allowed GS to surpass them), but it still amassed more points than Hydroid Krasis (a mythic), which was released in the same set, and was never banned in Standard, unlike Growth Spiral.
    I'm just glad this powerful common got fabulous Seb Mckinnon art to go with it! :)

    As someone who first got into Magic during Ixalan, I always find it weird when people talk about a time when Simic wasn’t busted
    I mean, Blue manipulates cards, and Green gets you lands to play those cards
    Those are, like, the most fundamental parts of magic
    So it seems natural that it would be the most powerful

      I played from some years before the arena, and green usually was seen like white is now and was point at as the weakest/one of the weakest colors. Besides, aside from some very lock archetypes, the things blue did didn't line up well with the stuff green was into. That's also the reason why i don't like the youtubers pointing as green/simic as the problem with mtg when the whole color pie is in jeopaedy and broken cards are coming out in other color combinations

    • @TheShinyFeraligatr
      @TheShinyFeraligatr 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, and neither color used to do anything at all to actually interact with your opponent - a lost art in these days, but once one of the pillars of the game. Because of this, most UG decks are three color decks - BUG or RUG or WUG - because if you're playing two colors and one is green, if Fetches or good fixing are around you can play 3.

      I think it was best when green was ‘strong but not broken’ (khans era,) but yeah i feel you there. Green is objectively being lushed way harder than what is reasonable. When we have cards getting banned in modern and legacy back to back sets due to the exact same design mistakes it should make us all worry for the longevity of the game. Even in urzas block they fixed their mistakes but now its been 2 years of the same damned mistake over and over and it doesnt look like wizards is gonna stop lol.

    • @julianfacundocalabrese1176
      @julianfacundocalabrese1176 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@mr.joesterr5359 agreed on that, in the last 8 or so sets standard felt like modern at times, people who enjoy lower power games has nowhere to go really, and it comes down to the new phylosophy in design (FIRE) and i suspect some executives at hasbro are putting their spoons on the soup thinking they are chefs, and pushing for more staples and boost more sales, the same can be said for making 100 products a year which must be impossible to make them all desirable and balance at the same time. I also really miss the old block/semiblock system, in this one shot planes they really have to cram a ton of things together and everything feels empty, there's no constellation decks in standard because there are too few cards for that, there's like 8 or 10 tribes in kaldheim but none got good support, there's barely any mutate to write home about, the game just keeps losing more and more charm and confidence

      It's definitely another Simic card that shouldn't have been printed. The idea is fine, but they just stuffed to many useful abilities on to the card. Like it could have just made serpents on your turn, or it could have just tapped opposing cards, or it could have just sacc'd a serpant to be indestructible. Toning it down just a little would have at least made it fair. But it's a swiss army knife in a single card. It's just too much.

    Uro would have still been good if it's escape cost was 6 mana and 6 cards. As printed, it's ridiculous. Escape is basically flashback. It should cost _more_ than you'd expect to pay for the spell if you hard cast it, because it's an inherent 2-1. This is fundamental design principle of MtG.

    This list provides a pretty good insight on why playing Magic and especially Standard has been a rather unfun experience over the last two years.
    Elk-standard and Growth Spiral into Uro drove me out to even launch Arena for quite some time ... I'm just worried that WotC hasn't learnt the lesson yet.

    • @Ceracio
      @Ceracio 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm kinda worried about this too. Personally it was that meta where every single game I played on Arena was against either a Simic Flash deck (Reclamation, Cutthroat, Wolf, etc.) or a Mono-Red Cavalcade of Cancer deck. Couldn't stand it. Ended up uninstalling. I've been having quite a bit of fun in Brawl recently, but standard is still a ****fest, from the little I have played it.

    • @Ceracio
      @Ceracio 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@garettkutcher9531 That would... That would actually be brilliant. It would solve the repetitive nature of standard while insuring that more cards see competitive play AND forcing WotC to actually think about the rarity of cards when designing them. It would be very weird for rarity-shifted reprints, though.

    What’s the max number of points a card can make from standard alone? Or in other words, at what point is it impossible for a card to make it onto a list through being played in just standard?

  • @mightyone3737
    @mightyone3737 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I still cannot believe they printed Oko able to elk other people's stuff as a plus ability. Speaking of which, did you ever do a vid about the Top 10 Most Obvious/Stupidest Cards, IE ones that you needed 0 skill to play and win off of. Could be luck based wins, could be just a stupid beater like an Eldrazi that just blows up everything, could be Oko and he just elks everything until he wins you the game by himself. Cards that work so simply/well that you just need to cast that stupid card to win, and few decks could do anything about it. Not including any 'combos' that are givens, IE cards that specifically work with another card by name, just single idiot button cards that win.
    When I started playing, the thing that grabbed my attention for real wasn't power level, it was that cards were interesting (and could be pretty complex). I already played other games that were simple (and Crazy 8s was really cheap to play for example), what made Magic a bit different was that bad but interesting cards regularly saw print, and sometimes the bad but interesting cards ended up being decent anyways. I liked Homarids at the time, because you actually had to plan ahead pretty far or you were toast. Another one, look at the original text of Tacklemaggot and weep, for example, but we played with it as 12 year olds, it's not like cards needed to be stupid to see play among casuals. I think the real problem here was that WotC tried to tap into the less nerdy demographics that weren't as literate/good with numbers, and they needed to dumb the game down or it'd never reach those people. Growing the game is good (and makes a ton of money), but game quality at times does suffer.
    The closest we get to that kind of zaniness lately would be Eldraine, where really offbeat stuff like Clackbridge Troll got made. Of course, they pushed the rest of the set so hard that the interesting cards didn't see much play, but if you wanted weird cards, they did exist in that set to a degree that they hadn't for a long time. Theros Beyond Death felt like the opposite though, so I doubt we'll be seeing tons of interesting and complex cards.

    If oko isn't #1 then it's probably hydroid krasis, since it's not banned everywhere

  • @Krunschy
    @Krunschy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Getting banned ín a competitive format should add like 20 points to a cards score in my opinion. This probably isn't enough to make up for how much play they had seen if they were left untouched, but it does compensate for it at least a little bit, thus helping to put their powerlevel into perspective.

  • @RiseInAfterlife

    Only reason Oko is not #1 is cause he was banned in almost every format.

    • @ninguemsabe3255
      @ninguemsabe3255 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For sure, would be one of the best cards of the format. Many of the decks that currently run Violent outburst/Ardent plea and do some sort of cascade combo would instead just run shardless. Not only that you can actually run shardless in a normal deck, without cascade tricks and have it be good.
      Really doubt they will make shardless modern legal, but... who knows?
