Assume x^189-1/x^189=y subtract both, you will get x^189=5-y/2
Put the value of x^189 in the equation and you will get the answer as √21.
Formula won't be required.just common sense.

Yes. The algebraic manipulation is independent of the exponent 189, that is, x^189.
Note it says IF x^189 + 1/x^189 = k THEN ...
So just let y = x^189 and then argue as IF y+1/y = k THEN ...
The value of x or y is also irrelevant since it is assumed that the proposition is true.
