    I did this very question today at flight school (Ft Huachuca) and didn't fully understand how my answer related to the question ie the wind and air speed and how it affected my true course. Your on screen notes on the map put it all into perspective. Thank you.

    Hello Agentcapture,
    16 degrees West would be an addition of 16 to your heading. Magnetic Variation it is indicated with a W or E on the sectional, and indicates the location of the Agonic line in reference to your location, not the other way around. This is why East variation is indicated in the Western U.S. and West variation is indicated in the Eastern U.S. You add for West and you subtract for East to determine Magnetic Course from True Course.
