@@tranquilitybase8100 agreed. I think there was definitely some hesitation on Disney's part to have a truly morally gray lead character. Doesn't really fit their family friendly brand.
That's a classic symptom of Disney star wars. Big and flashy but with no creativity. I mean even think about some of the character design and names of planets in the sequel trilogy. They just don't feel like Star Wars names and locations. It's like certain types of Modern art or somebody just throws some paint and gasoline on a chunk of concrete sets it on fire then sells it for a million dollars
@@RabidNemo People love Mando, and that was all Disney StarWars. Lets be real about the issues here. Its not "corpos" (jesus, that word sounds childish). The problem was Robert Rodriguez. He's a shit writer and director by all objective standards. The people who think the director is always right and the producers are always evil dont understand anything about the filmmaking process. Not having a plan (once again) was the problem with Disney's execution of this show. Sequels? No planned throughline. Solo? Unplanned reshoots and multiple director changes. What happens when they DO get their "corpo" fingers into the pie? Rogue One and Mando. Kathleen Kennedy is arguably THE most decorated producer in Hollywood history, yet she/disney/writers/directors horribly botched the sequels by not having a set plan and setting boundaries for the creatives to create....and then made one of biggest TV shows of all time (Mando)..because of planning and not giving TOO much freedom to the creatives.
In regards to the Hutt Twins. I think it really sums up the entire show. They come in, are built up to be a major part of the show, and then just vanish abruptly. When I first watched this show, I thought it was OBVIOUS that the Hutt Twins were laying a trap for Boba because otherwise their actions would make no sense. I kept waiting for them to come back...but it never happened. They're only in the show to give Boba a Rancor in order to have a riding scene at the end. Because it's fan service. Jabba had a Rancor, so must Boba. That's it. They're just a tool really, not an actual character.
The Hutt twins were among the most painful parts of this show because they had such a cool introduction. Just another waste of potentially quality characters (looking at you Mok Shiaz and Garsa Fwip). The rancor... sigh. The Rule of Cool was just too irresistable for the showrunners.
I feel the guts where setting a trap till the pikes came in because war is bad for business that’s a very hit thing to do plus whoever wins they will try to make a deal with. This show was more on him getting out of the pit and to world build and set up the characters for the other shows and in the end boba will give the place over while he’s not there now that he made it safe so he can do real work in other shows
I think the twins are going to return in season two because they didn't leave because they were not asked to leave but rather because they didn't want to be involved in the fight
To add in more to Boba's rather strange background before this show, Boba has had a long list of cancelled projects that would have made him the main lead or a major role. To explain his rather comical death in RoTJ, Star Wars back then was originally planned to be a 12 movie saga, but Lucas lost motivation as a result of his divorce and the films being rather expensive to make so he made RoTJ the last movie in the OT. Boba was originally going to be the main villain with Jabba as the secondary villain of the 3rd film. Because of the shift plans, Boba was killed off quickly just to jump to the Death Star II battle. After learning of his popularity, Lucas gained a strange fondness for Boba and attempted to capitalize on said popularity by trying to make a solo film with him. But as you can guess, it got delayed many times and eventually cancelled. In the Prequel era of Star Wars, Lucas was trying to make a Star Wars tv show known as Underworld and it was initially rumored that Boba would have been one of the main characters to explore the Underworld of the Star Wars universe. To add more to it, the cancelled 1313 game was originally going to reveal that the main character was Boba and serve as some advertisement for the Underworld show. Both projects were cancelled as a result of the Disney buyout. Disney also attempted to make their own Boba movie like the Anthology style like Rogue One and Solo, but as a result of Solo bombing in the box office, once again Boba's movie was cancelled after many delays with shifts in directors. So to see Boba FINALLY getting the main lead role in his show and to be so mediocre and a different direction for the character that didn't even make any sense was a big slap to the face of Boba fans after many of his projects getting cancelled like that.
Not only that, the show unintentionally made Boba into more of the bumbling fool that many people that mocked the character being as a result of his RoTJ death.
@@HistoryandReviews Don't know what to tell you, when that is one of the reasons why Lucas cut the 12 original films to 3. Especially when he had some trouble with the film budget during the filming of RoTJ.
I am a huge fan of the ideas in this show, desert planets, criminal undergrounds, sand people, and especially Boba Fett. And yet im left wishing they never made this garbage :(
think it could have done much better if someone other than Disney was involved. someone who actually knows and RESPECTS the lore and backstories of the characters.
Literally the two things people knew and loved boba for is the fact that he’s a cold blooded killer and keeps to himself and gets jobs done, and somehow they didn’t do either of those things, that’s why it failed and people didn’t like it
@@sinjin9994 He was just a background, four lines, one dimesional character who was beat up by blind man; at this point different fans have different headcanon for him. Lol!! Now, Jango on the other hand, he had an established personality...
I was hoping for a more Logan/Unforgiven/John Wick plot line of a man trying to move past his past life but idiots keep trying to bring him back into the game.
@@XiuFeanaro6 Star Wars Bounty Hunter mad Jango more complex yeah. A man who lost his family and was just trying to make a living for himself. He was cold when working but was a very caring person when talking to his friend Roz.
I remember being little and learning the meaning of "Bounty Hunter" and "Mandalorian" thanks to the character of Boba Fett. Then this show comes along and tells me he is actually neither and that he is very compassionate. I know that this is very personal but I was just like "wtf??!" the whole time while watching this, couldn't even get past three episodies because of the sheer frustration. This video did a great job to articulate to myself why I felt that way.
Yea, as someone else mentioned in the comments, the expanded universe proved that you could definitely make a a really cool character out of Boba Fett, without sacrificing his complexity and nuance. It's crazy that they had so much material to pull from and still managed to bungle the job.
@@certainpointofreview I think they just cannot commit to make a show about morally dubious characters without changing everything to make the whole thing more family friendly. Add that to the fact that in this show Boba is a passive character (in stark contrast to his previous characterization) and you just don't have a show about Boba Fett. It's more of an expansion to the Mandalorian.
I agree, he had no problem selling the rebels out to Vader, or in returning Han to Jabba who he knew would torture and/or kill him. I get that he had a bit of a reform with the Tuscans, but he became kind to the point of stupidity and gullibility. If not for Mando’s thinking, he would have been killed easily.
Also about Boba's mercy, he also acts merciless AFTER the sand people. When he arrives in the Mandalorian (not the other way around), he holds a bantha stick, meaning this takes place after his walkabout with the sand people. In this scene he is just as boba-esque as he is in the og trilogy, literally shattering stormtroopers. So yeah, he's merciful before he's supposed to become merciful, and he's merciless after he's supposed to stop being merciless.
Great point. I agree, his characterization in Mando S2 is weirdly a lot more in line with his movie persona despite being mere days (?) before the start of this show. He is far more aggressive and deadly. To add to your example, when he meets Bo Kattan and she insults his father's legacy he immediately threatens her with violence and proceeds to fight her sidekick Koska. Hell, even his voice in this scene sounds way more menacing than anything in BoBF.
I think a lot of ppl are missing the fundamental driving force of bobas character ... ever since episode 2, boba fetts defining characteristic has been abandonment issues ... Hes a clone who idolized his dad n then lives his life trying to justify his exsistance by carrying on jangos legacy ... Thats why he always wants to fit in with the group but he lashes out at ppl who betray him and cares too much about validation ... His character is consistent from prequels, clone wars, classic trilogy, through BOB
Wait wait wait.... HOW do you guys only have 40 subscribers???? This video is so polished and well done, that I thought this was a developed channel with at *least* a few hundred thousand subscribers. You certainly deserve that and more so here's my subscription to help you along! Fantastic video. We will watch your career with great interest!
Hello there! Thank you for the kind words, this is our first time doing this sort of thing so we have to start somewhere, haha. Really appreciate the sub. The next big thing on our horizon is, of course, Kenobi, but we have a few smaller projects in the meantime to fill the gap. Hope you enjoy, and let us know what you think!
Great breakdown. You brought up a bunch of stories, and character beats that I felt were bad but couldn't break down exactly why. Keep up the excellent work. I subbed
This is exactly how I felt about this show, what a great analysis, one of the best BOBF criticism video I've seen on youtube. I was so disappointed by this show. Initially I thought they're planning a second season since the pacing is so slow. But the weird out of place Mando hijacking and boring conclusion makes me think there wont be a season 2. Shame, it could have been the easiest show to make and be successful almost effortlessly. How can you mess this up so badly?
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video. I think a lot of us were baffled with how the show was handled considering it should have been an easy slam dunk.
Totally agree! Disney has this sort of ability, at least with me, where upon initially watching on the surface its enjoyable and you walk away thinking "oh that was a solid episode" while quietly noticing flaws and problems that don't bubble to the surface and become apparent until you reach the conclusion of the show and think "that was it?". It's hard to describe, but feels like I'm being duped for daring to be excited for a new star wars experience. It's when I watch videos like these where the dots I've subconsciously accumulated and one's I hadn't even noticed all connect and I see just how mediocre it all was and how poorly everything was executed. It bums me out to see stuff that could have been a really cool idea on paper get kneecapped by bad writing and bad execution. Unrelated but, I love your dual narration. it's a neat style I haven't seen much of before. I think having these larger video essays where you both participate is really cool because you both get an opportunity to voice your precise thoughts on a whole season or film. A bit of constructive criticism, I think the way you tag team these videos could be a bit more smooth. The key to making videos like this work is to have good synergy and compliment each other's roles neatly which I believe you're both capable of given the excellent quality of the video and editing displayed here. I also saw a comment talking about meme use, I kind of agree. I'd say you can definitely work memes and jokes into the fray it just need to be more smoothly and with more finesse. gotta make the humor fit more naturally and work to serve the script a bit better. Don't give up on humor just refine it, it adds a good layer to the video experience. Also this is the last and most subjective point, but don't be afraid to rag on Disney for the more egregious things, they are a billion dollar company with practically unlimited resources so I think it's fair to be a bit harder on them sometimes. ultimately you guys did a wonderful job and it'll be great to watch you grow, the fact you're already debuting with this level of quality is awesome and the future looks bright.
Really appreciate the comment. This is the exact kind of feedback that we are looking for. Obviously we are still learning and trying new things, but it's comments like these that really help us figure out what works and what doesn't. Hope you tune in when we do Kenobi!
The fact that you guys don't have hundreds and thousands of subscribers is beyond me. this video is so well put together and in depth. keep up the good work as you guys are surely destined for greatness.
Thank you for the encouraging comment! We worked hard on this vid and (at the risk of sounding cheesy af) to hear that people are enjoying it really does make the hours put in worth it. We've got a lot of cool shows coming out this year (Kenobi and House of the Dragon loom over the horizon!) so we will keep working hard to put out quality content on them.
@@certainpointofreview You'll find something to complain about with the other shows you mentioned. I can see it now, Kenobi comes out and you release a video called "Why Kenobi failed" trying desperately to get views with your negative clickbait videos. Your as transparent as a glass house
Because the best way to get subscribers is to make up fake controversies or rumors that the haters are searching for. If a channel like this gives an honest review or take of something, it'll only attract those looking for that honesty. Now, I'm sure they would *quadruple* their subscribers if they wrote "Kathleen Kennedy wrote the scripts and did the character developments and is now being fired for it!!"....
Including Mando season 2.5 was a way for Disney to ensure that merchandising of Mando and Grogu together can continue without a real interruption. The hard reset completely ruins Mando S2's finale. Everything is thrown away and it's cheap and very very Disney's SW.
You hit a lot of points right on the head. The way he seems like a side character in his own show, a passive idiot. My son and I were struck by his sheer INCOMPETENCE - not just in running a crime syndicate because, hey, he'd never done that before. But in FIGHTING! I mean, in the little we see of him prior to this show, he was always a canny, competent fighter. In his own show he's a total fool who gets rag-dolled by no-name tools in masks. It's a total joke. The show was absolute garbage until Mando, Grogu and Luke showed up.
I think the main problem with the series is that Disney tried to throw the old Boba Fett out the window and replace him with someting new. From The Mandalorian I can only suspect that they really didn´t want a bad guy in the main role so they invented a copy. When that didn´t work they tried this... My main point is that there was a prefectly good story to build from. In short: After the battle of Endor Han and Leia return to Tatooine in order to solve Han´s financial problems. Soon they enounter jawas and a captured Fett who suffers from memory loss after the Sarlac inicident. Although the end of the story is disappointing, we see a Fett who is much more in character and (when he does remember who Han is) clearly is out for revenge.
Someone already said it but there is too much corporate control. That's going to be the problem with Star Wars for as long as Disney owns the property. They gave Boba's character to Din Djarin while calling him an original character while a ruthless bounty hunter is neutered. Mando while "good" is overrated, the first season was arguably more creative than season 2 which was a member berries springboard season.
Yea, as long as plot beats are written by committee, going to have issues. If Kenobi is much the same, that will be pretty indicative of a franchise-wide problem.
But they makes wonders with marvel.. So the issue is starwars itself, this universe cant stand on its own without the skywalkers.. They are an important part, but instead of moving on they keep reviving the past, always the same story, characters, planets.. Starwars is living on the nostalgia from ep456 for olders,123 for youngers fans cause the owners dont thrust that an older or newer story will bring fans back. It show that people in charge are out of touch or doesnt give a f.. Starwars need a Kevin Feige like, someone that know what to do, like what he is doing, respect and love the material
@@77SBCR they do wonders with Marvel? My friend, my dude, my compadre, Marvel superhero movies peaked with Captain America Winter Soldier, and the first Guardians of the Galaxy, and a notable exception post 2014 is Avengers Infinity War. It's got nothing to do with the Skywalkers, there is several side stories that don't feature the Skywalkers(now decanonized) that are great stories. Kevin Feige also doesnt respect the source material, he's more than happy to change things to appeal to more tyrannical and dictatorial countries, and to satisfy Twitter weirdos in North America(The West).
@@HeavyMetalJesus02 yet marvel movies are hitting number1 everytime, look no way home. And yea thats called give what the fans want. I rather have a strong badass female introduced, than a show on a muted character with 3 min screentime in 3 movies 😂. Those movies you are talking about are phase1/2, those are past. Since there was ragnarok, infinity war, endgame, the tv shows like wandavision that pay hommage to sitcoms while making wanda therapy, introducing the scarlet witch. Some didnt liked it cause its not a mindless fight show without explosions every 5min, just stupid. Loki was mindblowing from the music to the acting and writting, to stakes with Kang coming. You can dislike it, but calling it garbage cause theres a female is so stupid, at least the show make sens and keep driving the story forward, not like starshit, overrated af and always about the same stuff. Woaw sand planet, never seen before. Except in EP 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9. And all shows. Wow so the story is still bout the skywalkers? No way 😱. Did we even saw something else?At least the prequels tried to show us this universe. Thats the thing, dislike marvel for womens :stupid but your opinion. But starwars movies and shows are so bad from every aspect, technically. They have much to learn from Marvel success. They tried to copy Ironman snap, shit was pathetic😂. On marvel side the only equivalent can beCaptain Marvel, but she got 1 movie and 10min in endgame so its not that big of a deql
@@77SBCR yes, and at 1 point James Cameron's Avatar had the number one box office, or still does. Does that make the movie groundbreaking or good? Not really it was a mediocre film that relied upon spectacle and novelty to make its money, and Eternals, and Black Widow hit number 1 as well? Are we chalking that up to merit or because of the few actual new movies in theatres due to Covid restrictions? I'm sorry man, WandaVision really wasnt that good, nor were any of the tv shows, did a terrible job of trying to make the viewer sympathize with the villain(Wanda). Loki was alright, but I was expecting Loki and Mobius TV show. Not the "Sylvie" show. It's fine if you like bad content, people like The Room. Also I thought you were talking about respecting the source material? What's this about badass females? I have no problems with badass females, there were a couple in the original LoTR movies. You're sounding like you're trying to project things onto me to strawman some sort of argument I never made. I am also referring to the casting of Tilda Swinton in Doctor Strange, great actress, but it was done to appeal to China, and then also making characters gay or bisexual, or race swapping characters even though it is not canonical to the source material. I never cared for Rey because her extreme levels of power clashes with what we know about the light side of the force, that It requires years of discipline and training. I don't like what they did with Finn because because they made a brainwashed child soldier defector into comic relief when he could have easily been one of the most interesting characters in the series. Why are you making arguments against me that I never argued or rebutted for in the first place? Am I misunderstanding something here?
The Mando episodes are definitely a highlight, and the Armorer is such a cool character. But just felt like that stuff needed to be in Mando S3, no Boba's show.
@@certainpointofreview again totally agree. I see this series as more of a missed opportunity. The Hutt twins especially. And why couldn't Boba recruit his old posse like Bosk and Dangar
I actually enjoyed the first 2 episodes a lot; thought it was an interesting subversion of the character, and his early decisions (outside of not killing the dog) could be explained as self preservation, then undergoes actual change through his time with the raiders. However, once that plot line was dropped the quality fell off a cliff and never recovered (not counting mandalorian season 2.5). If they had stuck with just explaining how Boba became the man he was in the Mandalorian, and relegated his gang wars to B plots for future Mando episodes, it would have been a stronger show for it (or, at least, a much more focused show).
Yea, we actually held out some hope in the first two episodes. Not exactly what we were expecting but thought there could be some potential. Turned out to be so many missed opportunities instead.
@@certainpointofreview missed opportunities? Do realize how much they gave us and how much they capitalized on? Granted not every person can get what they want this was a story, one boba didn’t have before. This was there story to tell not ours. If you want a picture perfect series make a fan film. Although it wasn’t absolutely stellar, this show set up the next stages of Star Wars and explained bobas time since the sarlaac. Any thing you break down can be seen for it’s mistakes and failures. I could make a video review about how bad this review is and it would work.
I just want to thank the editor for that subtle perspective transforming of the stormtrooper helmet, while Palp turned in his chair. Chef smooches right there.
I also get them wanting to use the actor who played Jango previously to be Boba... But the guy is in the 60s I believe and it's unlikely they could have had him do a lot of physical scenes. They could have put a stuntman/younger actor under the helmet for action scenes; maybe that would have worked better. But I think the narrator is correcting saying that this show had no idea what it wanted to be. I'm also certain that there was a lot of studio interference and parts... Just has that feel. On its own and not comparing it to the mandalorian I thought it was okay as a show but not really worthy of being Boba Fett's show. Same basic script with a new character maybe that would have worked better? Still need a lot of tightening of the script and characters given more to do but I think overall it wouldn't bother us all so much if they hadn't used a known established character
Really enjoyed this breakdown. I pretty much feel exactly the same way about this show. Hoping you all are planning to cover kenobi as well, subscribed!
Really glad I found this video, you guys deserve a lot more views than about 50k. You did an excellent job at articulating a lot of the frustrations and disappointment that many of had not just with the show, but with most of Disney Star Wars as a whole. Outside of The Mandalorian which is the diamond in the rough, a lot of the same mistakes are repeated throughout nearly every everything they've done since purchasing the franchise.
Our current (wishful?) theory is that they gave Boba the "B-Team" script writers, developers, etc. and, hopefully, they were saving the "A-Team" for Kenobi. Only time will tell. While bad shows make for entertaining reviews, we are very much hoping Kenobi is a winner!
@@certainpointofreview very wishful, kenobi could be great but the writing team doesn't have any encouraging previous work, one of the lead writers has very questionable experience, edge of Tomorrow is pretty good but it's not exactly a complex story, john wick 3 is the weakest of the series and the rest of his work is well awful and the director Deborah chow I mean has nothing of note to inspire confidence her previous movies I haven't seen but they are certainly no way similar to this and are not praised at all, maybe this will be the team's big break but icl a lot of things I'm hearing and seeing ain't instilling confidence
11:05 the recurring imperial officer that kept getting demoted in Star Wars rebels and appeared a total of three times had more character than 90% of the characters in the book of boba Fett put together
This review pretty much sums it up. 👍 The thing that bothered me most, was the amount of fan service in every other scene. Remember Cad Bane? Remember BD-1 from Fallen Order? Remember General Grievous' arm-spining? Remember that rod from the trash compactor in ANH?
What a fantastic video from such a small channel like yours. The only parts of the show that I find to be good after all is Cade Bane’s look and the theme. I really enjoyed listening to you, earned a new sub!
The only problem I have for the inspector gadget power rangers is that they never once said it was "morphing time" or "go go gadget" before activating some bionic ability.
I and most people I know thought it was far from perfect, but that it was worth watching otherwise and that it's probably going to be part of the live actions characters and intrigues that they're creating. It wasn't perfect, but it still was more fun watching it than watching most TV Series as far as I'm concerned (I'm not huge on marvel, and Star Wars is pretty much one of the few more "space and/or fantastic and/or super power stuff" franchise that I enjoy watching.). I've read a lot of comments saying that it somehow ruined the character of Boba Fett, but I couldn't disagree more. We never knew much about canon Boba, and there's still plenty of room for stories about Boba being a ruthless cold blooded killing machine before Episode 6......Expecting a guy to survive the Sarlac pit and not come out of it a different man would have been a weird artistic choice IMO. An entire series about Boba just being mysterious and nodding his head would have been boring IMHO (he could still do that in series precedes Episode 6, he just wouldn't be the center of attention 100% of the time.) They made his transformation from lonely revengeful badass almost unbeatable warrior/bounty hunter/killer by having him being captured by the sandpeople, being sick and to their mercy......proving his worth, become part of the clan, having the lizard experience (looked like the Sand people's interpretation of the force/the way it has a place in their own specific culture.).....and then Boba got overconfident and got his whole clan except for the warrior, killed (and seemed particularly depressed about that Tusken kid). That's enough events for turning Boba into an evolving character without erasing opportunities to be the bad ass bounty hunter he was in plenty of other projects.........and it's not like Boba's going around giving his rivals flowers and money.....He still is has some pretty badass abilities. I'm confident that he'll show up again in other shows.......could be very interesting if somehow Windu and Fett face each other........I'm not certain an older wiser Boba would kill him if it happens after TBOBF.......if it happens before Episode 6? He most likely is going to try..........Heck, maybe Mace is going to give him advices before getting killed and these advices are what will give him the strength to survive the Sarlac + Tusken.....I just hope that they will do it well. No matter what direction they chose for their character, I just want them to make sense and be well explained. (Luke briefly wanting to kill Ben in between Ep 6 and TFA doesn't make sense with the character, and I'm not sure how they expected us to accept that the guy who wanted to save Vader at all price because there was still good in him, was unable to see that Kylo could be saved and focus on that instead of entertaining the idea of just murdering him.......Just an example of a character evolution that wasn't well handed (It's going to take some seriously good writing to retroactively make this one have some sort of sense.)
Disney (probably correctly) realized that they couldn't have two helmted leading characters in two different shows... but agreed. Part of Boba's mystique was that mystery. I remember when I was a kid there was a rumor that was going around that Boba was female (obviously, an improbable one). But like, we didn't KNOW that wasn't true... impossible to know for sure. And that only made the mystique better.
I rly love ahsoka as a character and am so excited for her show, but if it’s just going to be another book of boba fett, then I wish they would have killed her off in rebels season 2 in her battle with Vader. Disney needs to show why ahsoka is worth making a show about and focus on interesting writing and not just nostalgia or bad character development.
It might be because I'm not a diehard know-it-all star wars fan but I genuinely liked this series as a filler between season 2 and 3 of the mandalorian, and I think that's what it's purpose was. Give some backstory to how Boba Fett survived and why he's back, then tease at season 3 of the mandalorian. No, I don't think it warrants a second season since it's simply be dragging things on for no reason.
Magnificent analysis that highlights the core of the problem. The production quality and actors did a superb job, but their hard work was undermines by terrible writing. This video is critical asset, worthy of recognition in the archives of the Jedi Order.
Reason why was because fanboys/girls expected him to jet pack out of Space hell go on a ravage killing spree and kill Rey Palpatiene. But instead we got a rebirth story with God Father and Dances with wolves story.
Thanks! We find having two narrators helps spice things up a bit. Though it's not fitting for the video essay format, we do enjoy discussing things in a more conversational fashion. When Kenobi comes we will have that return with the indiviudal episode reviews, though, of course, there will likley be a longer-form video essay reviewing the whole series at the end.
When I saw the mayor's office I immediately assumed (from how cool and McQuarrie-esque the design is, as well as where the story seemed to be going with Boba) that Boba would take over that chair by the end of the series. I guess that's still possible, but boy it went in a different direction than I expected
Amazing how after Return of the Jedi, Boba Fett is half-digested by a Sarlaac, starves in the desert, and yet manages to gain 50 lbs. Bad casting! Needed someone 30 years younger.
It’s so sad what they did for the established characters. All of the characters outside of Chad Bane were heavily bastardized and even with him all of his actions were ultimately pointless.
Yeah; when I was watching the show, I kept trying to find a way to explain how it could have worked, even though I knew that this wasn't working. My reasoning was "If I take the character that I saw in the Clone Wars, age him up to the ruthless bounty hunter we see in the show, and then look at the Sarlaac Pit as the lowest point of his life after the death of his father (because of his connection to his father's armor, feeling like a failure for being beaten so badly and being robbed by the jawas), then I can see the starting point that this character is coming from and how everything after that is a change." I personally think a scene of Boba breaking down after he got out of the Sarlaac Pit but before the Tuskens found him would have provided a decent status quo to start the character from to justify how he acts later. By the Mando episodes, I was furious and stopped making excuses. Leaving out an emotional scene after the Sarlaac Pit wasn't just an oversight in my opinion, it was disrespectful of this character. Because the show acts at the end like Boba Fett went through this massive character arc, but they a) never established what he changed from, b) it's not clear in the show what made him change, they just spit out a few half assed excuses that don't add up with what we've seen, and c) the show had gone out of their way to not focus on this character for half of it's run time, and now all of a sudden we're supposed to think they put effort into making this great character study? I was more angry with this tv show than I was in Rise of Skywalker; that's how manipulative and lazy it felt to me. And I didn't even care about Boba Fett before this
Honestly I feel like they tried to make a show for children with black and white morality rather than embracing Boba's coldness or at least trying to get to the root of Boba's coldness.
I would have preferred a linear narrative. I think they took the easy way when they opted for multiple flashbacks. I also found the final battle a bit anticlimactic. I didn’t like it as much as the Mandalorian.
Yea, the bacta flashbacks turned out to be a very lazy narrative crutch. Flashbacks can be useful, but they need to accomplish something and, unless in the hands of a true master, should be used sparingly. Not the case here.
No doubt. But this slew of medocrity is bound to hit profits evenutally. We are Star Wars fans for life, and will watch whatever schleck that gets put out with a Star Wars logo until the end of time. But casual viewers who don't have that loyalty are bound to eventually be turned off by medicore content. And even loyal fans can rebel of it gets bad enough: see S8 of GoT for example.
It was a decent storyline. The biker gang was too flashy and pretty much useless. I did enjoy the backstory with the Sand people and bringing in Mando,The Marshall and Cad Bane was well done. It was not the greatest but it was enjoyable.
I think the first two episodes were awesome. After that just okay. I don’t see it to be as bad as the general audience. The two things that really annoy me is what happens to Cad Bane and the biker gang. Character wise they’re just okay but they’re riding shiny mopeds.
This was rather well done. The switching of the narrator was an interessting idea, the script was decent too and the visual editing wasn´t bad either. But it feels like this is two different videos with two different ideas stitched together. The beginning was leaning heavily on memes and references, while the second half was a lot more leaning in the more traditional video essay direction. The one thing i actualy disliked was the looping background music. It didn´t realy fit the tone you were probably going for and it was distracting at times. All in all a solid video, espacially for such a young chanel. I will stick around to see where this is going.
Thank you for taking the time to share some constructive criticism. Funnily enough some of the things you mentioned are things we agonized over when making the video as well. For example, we also weren't sure about the dual narration, but we had been watching the show together and this was our first "big" project, so it felt right that both of us should take part in this particular video. That being said we are aware that it's definitely not the norm, and some future videos will only be narrated by one of us, depending on the show/topic (e.g., we have a video coming up early next week about House of the Dragon which Ax narrates alone). And the music is something we debated for a while---I spent a whole day trying different songs and even no songs (ultimately we agreed that our voices just sounded better with at least some bg music, but we definitely understand how it could be distracting for some, because at times we felt that too). All of this is to say: we're still experimenting with what feels right, so feedback like this is genuinely appreciated. The point about front loading the memes is definitely something we hadn't considered.
@@mattmurphy7030 It has been a journey figuring out which format works. For the actual individual episode reviews (if you look at our Boba playlist you can find all of them), that is exactly what we do, just have a coversation discussing our thoughts on the most recent episode. The issue is that given the timing constraints, and the fact that we both have pretty busy non-youtube jobs, they aren't at all as polished as this was. And, for what it's worth, they did not get a lot of views. We are still trying to figure out what the next steps are, but our current plan (subject to change) is to keep putting out these longer more polished video essays every couple of months, continue with the individual episode reviews for the shows we really care about (so, likely Kenobi, LotR, and House of the Dragon at the moment), and then do a few smaller one-off review and exaplantory videos in between. The next month or so until Kenobi comes out should be pretty busy for us. Ax is going to be spearheading some character primers for House of the Dragon to get people caught up on the lore before the series comes out, and YungDeegs has a couple other series he is watching for which he plans to produce some content around shortly as well. Regardless, all suggestions and feedback welcome, excited to see what new directions are in store for the channel.
The best part of boba fett was when mando appeared funny how they had to bring a completly new character to bring familiarity to a show that has one of the most iconic characters (boba fett)
21:00 While I agree that Boba didn’t have much of a character in the original trilogy, he was a character. Boba Fett’s reputation in the galaxy is the Respectable and Legendary Bounty Hunter. Judging Boba from behavior (for this examination, I will look at his development in the films and not any third-party media: games, books, shows, or comics), Boba displayed aspects of bravery, respect, moral ambiguity, stoicism, intelligence, skill, and seriousness. Boba first appears as Jabba’s (a great crime-lord) bodyguard (building his reputation as respectable), then is hired by the Empire to aid in the chase of Luke Skywalker (showing his skill), and in all cases, is shown to be a formidable obstacle to our heroes. Even when Darth Vader (a man who is known for his intolerance of failure) alters their deal, Boba - to his face - demands compensation from Vader and is granted his request. Boba is neither good nor bad, as he works with whoever can afford him (in contrast with the show’s representation of him, and I’m not buying into the Sarlacc psychological change of his morality). There is even subtle characterization when Boba flirts with one of the cantina girls in Episode VI. The Book of Boba Fett had much information to work with when developing Boba’s character (especially when including third-party media) but missed the mark. Imagine how interesting a morally ambiguous crime-lord or bounty hunter show would have been.
Tbh we agree. Some of the Tusken sequences were pretty good (the train scene is probably the best set piece in the show) but then they decided to just abruptly kill the entire Tusken tribe offscreen without any satisfactory conclusion. That made the entire flashback plotline ultimately feel like an empty waste of time. The Tuskens weren't real characters. We didn't even know any of their names. They're just a plot device. Similar to the Pykes they aren't given any individuality. They're just one big 'group' that exists to give Boba a cheap motivation to act. And it's a shame, because a couple of the Tuskens could have been fleshed out into proper characters. The warrior Tusken and the Chieftain, and even the little kid could have all been given more screen time and actual character traits. But because the show is trying to tell two stories in a ridiculously short timeframe, they had to basically rush to close the Tusken Raider plotline in an extremely underwhelming manner. The show needed to pick one plotline and do it well, instead of trying to divide its very limited time into two different stories. If the entire show had been Boba with the Tuskens (or vice versa, if the entire show had been the present crime lord story) it would have been much better for it.
@@certainpointofreview I do agree the show was a lil disjointed and yes at points I was watching mando season 3 lmao.Like who is boba fett😂.I did want more of boba being a anti hero and not just a “good guy”
It felt rushed. And there was really no story in it. Should have just made mandalorion season 3, after all the best episodes was during the 2 episodes just for mando
Holy FUCK! I was stunned when I reached the end of the video and found out that this was your first project! Your talent is undeniable! This channel is going places, mark my zuckerbergs
It didn't seem like a failure to me. Sure it went a little sideways at times, but its was good entertainment. For the diehard fans I guess it didn't follow all the " rules " but so what.
I think our crituqe was less about following established die-hard "rules" and more about fundamental problems we thought it had regarding plot, pacing and narrative, b u t, that's just us. Always happy to see a Star Wars fan like Star Wars content! Some our favorite Star Wars content isn't considered very good by most of the fandom either, but it doesn't matter to us!
Jason Wingreen right? He did have a good voice. Would have been hard to use him though, since I think he passed away a few years ago. That original cold tone though, so quality.
Amazing video man really glad to have found this channel - can’t wait to see what more you bring out, love the music and how it’s all been effectively used, you definitely know what you’re doing!
You're certainly not wrong on some of the problems with BOBF but overall I still (mostly) enjoyed it. A few tweeks here & there, Episode 5 & 6 transferred to Mandalorian where they belong, making 10 1+ hour long episodes, showing Boba, Mando, & Fennec giving the mod scooter gang battle tactics & firearms training, & showing Danny Trejo & Boba & the Rancor training together would have helped tremendously in my opinion.
This show really ruined the mystique of Boba Fett. It would've been better if they never did a Boba Fett show and just left him as a character that sometimes crosses paths with Mando.
SMH, What mystique? GL killed this dude off in the OT like some chump. Clone Wars, Mando, and BoBF at least give him more of a back story and a path forward unless you read the legends books on him. He is a side story of a side story. The whole series was a fan service trap that I gladly jump into again. Boba is a popular and beloved but highly overrated character in SW's narrative, similar to Darth Maul. He is not the hill I would die on for sure.
When Danny Trejo appeared... worse than Ed Sheeran in GoT for me. But yea, unlike with the Mandalorian, the rotation cast of directors did not serve this series well.
"Something, Something Crimelord..." LOL. Fantastic Essay, really like the tag team approach you both bring to your pov. I agree with all the points made which definitely mirror my own video essay on this series. Looking forward to seeing more on this channel
Appreciate the kind words man. Watching your Boba video now and completely agree with many of your points as well. Really enjoy the analysis of the admittedly solid visual and aural aspects of the show--That's something we neglected to do when making this video, and in retrospect I wish we would have made a section to point out the (few) things we liked about Book of Boba Fett because I think its important to recognize the good as well as the bad. Anyways, thanks again, always happy to meet a fellow SW fan and TH-camr!
Bringing Mando in was a mistake. Lack of character development. Lackluster action scenes. And more than one Director. The industry has issues. There should be show producers & only ONE director. Anything different signals to me that there are problems. Leadership, money, etc. I have seen from a very small number of critics that are good concerning this show. Most are really lame though.😆
Simple: they had one episode of dreadfully written material they stretched out to 6 episodes & 2 of them didn’t even include boba. Disney writes things based on points they feel they need, not on the characters ie. “we need a portal, a cgi battle, a plane getting eaten by an alien, 20 snarky jokes, etc.” Book of boba rarely had moments that werent blatantly idiotic. The most famous bounty hunter in the galaxy who pilots Slave 1 climbs out of a sarlac pit & suddenly is anti-violence & pro Tuscan raider? A crime lord who commits no crimes? A man who never removed his helmet but not never wears it? A galaxy renown killer who gets beat up constantly by random tatoine guards? A confident cold assassin who suddenly is a weak, pushover coward who needs a girl to pull his nuts back down? A smart & cunning killer is suddenly a bumbling Homer Simpson in space getting duped & bewildered by everyone he meets? Trains still exist to rob? Everything about the story is dumb. Even practically - he climbed out of the pit with his armor on, why would he go back to look for it in the pit & do some stupid face-first maneuver to find it? Real boba would have killed all the Tuscans, tracked the Jawas who took the amor, killed all of them & burned their ship, & continued to track & kill everyone on his way to finding his armor so he can go get vengeance on Han Solo & Luke Skywalker for his embarrassing demise.
This show was far from perfect, but in my book, it definitely had its highlights. I'm still happy I saw Cad Bane again... even if he got (presumably) killed an episode later....
Boba Fest should never have had his own series. He is an antagonist, not the protagonist. As popular as he is (he's one of my favourites, if not favourite, SW character) he should be used sparingly and defiantly remain mysterious. He should have been the main for supporting protagonist for the Mandalorian season 2 onwards, if anything.
There's definitely something to be said about Boba's short and sporadic appearances contributing to his cool, mysterious aura. I'd agree he works better as a side character.
I don't agree with that. Because Boba has worked as a protagonist (Anti-hero) in the Expanded Universe. Look up things like Boba Fett: Twin Engines of Destruction or the Boba Fett Blood Ties or Boba Fett is Dead comics. Or any of the older novels (Even if they are outdated by the prequels). Those are more compelling stories for the character than whatever the hell Book of Boba Fett is supposed to be. The problem put plainly is the absolutely horrible writing in this show, it feels so limp wristed and Boba is hardly the same character, like he needs someone to tell him what to do? In the old canon, Boba was crafty enough to out wit 5 Bounty Hunters and still deliver Han to Jabba. On his own. WHERE WAS THAT CHARACTER?
Great video bro, you outline every issue I had and some that I didn’t realize I had with the show as a whole. You showing how he was a cold blooded killer originally and now he was a wise old pacifist now made zero sense. And they completely wasted cad bane.
Glad you enjoyed! Yea, it was such an abrupt character transition. Our best theory is that the script writers were working by committee, so nothing was real consistent. And agreed on Cad Bane, such a disappointing end for a cool character.
Glad to hear it! Even though we obviously disagreed, always happy to hear when someone enjoys any Star Wars content! We are both noted apologists for the prequels (even though we admit they aren't quality wise very good at times), but it doesn't matter because we both enjoy them! Hope you still liked the video even though you came to a different conclusion.
There is no doubt that the Mandalorian was the best part of this show. I doubt I will ever rewatch any part of this series again, with the noted exception of Episode 5. That opening sequence alone... almost made up for the rest of the series. Almost lol.
I honestly loved the show and saw no flaws, besides maybe spending a bit too much time on Mando near the end. But other than that I definitely loved it.
@@freekill1018 no, I honestly don't know where people are getting that from lol. He does pretty well with all that the character has gone through in his life. Remember, he's gotta be almost in his 50s and isn't a Jedi and hasn't been raised with Mandalorian fighting teachings. Also, his views on life changed greatly after spending time with the Tuscan Raiders. And if you think that Boba Fett has always been an amazing fighter or something, I think people are forgetting how he "died" in Return of the Jedi. It was pretty silly lol, no offense to Boba.
Really enjoyed this, wish I had discovered it earlier. Some genuine laugh out loud moments and it really captures everything that was misguided about this show. Awesome vid. 👍
I think it can have a season 2 I could be very bias but my opinion I thought it was great my only problem was that boba Fett got moved over like a side character halfway through if they make a season 2 and just focus on boba then I would be 100% happy but that's just me ( oh yeah and the street gang cyberpunk kids was a big no for me didn't fit star wars at all )
What are YOUR thoughts on The Book of Boba Fett? Do you think it warrants a second season?
No.
A 2nd season could be made but it needs more focus next time
It was a wasted opportunity. Disney was too afraid to have a character that was a mobster, which is what the show needed.
@@tranquilitybase8100 agreed. I think there was definitely some hesitation on Disney's part to have a truly morally gray lead character. Doesn't really fit their family friendly brand.
Let Disney Star Wars die, kill subscriptions if you have to
I get the feeling that Book of Boba had too many corpos in the room and not enough design/ artistic leadership.
Need less corpos.
@@john-danielkelley1307 right??
Whoo! I’m not the only one on TH-cam saying ‘corpos’!
This show made me feel stuck between to pipes
I feel the guts where setting a trap till the pikes came in because war is bad for business that’s a very hit thing to do plus whoever wins they will try to make a deal with. This show was more on him getting out of the pit and to world build and set up the characters for the other shows and in the end boba will give the place over while he’s not there now that he made it safe so he can do real work in other shows
I would only of enjoyed the Rancor if they gave a damn good reason for him not to use his FREAKIN' SPACE SHIP.
The films being expensive had nothing to with it when they all made money! Durrr
It was originally called “Star Wars Live Action Television Series” I remember, I looked it up daily from 2005- 2008
@@vashythewabbit8288 so what your saying is that the show is more in line with his original appearance
@@HistoryandReviews Don't know what to tell you, when that is one of the reasons why Lucas cut the 12 original films to 3. Especially when he had some trouble with the film budget during the filming of RoTJ.

I agree. Just fucking look at his fighting scene(s) near the end of the mandalorian season 2. He's portrayed pretty well.
If only Disney had the balls to make decent characters
Just have to hope they don't bungle the new characters in Kenobi!
Hard agree. It is made all the more frustrating because there was that good story. A real missed opportunity.

No way 😱.
Thank you for creating this video. I saw your other format and I prefer this style with the calm music, and I can listen to it in the background.
Thank you for the feedback! We will definitely be making more video essays like this in the future.
It has it's moment's. Cade Bane intro, flashbacks were good, love the armoror lore exposition scene.

I hate the vespa gang… it’s just out of place. And the chick that undermine Boba and he’s not slapped her on site was just insulting
Don’t forget when he kills bib in cold blood and those storm troopers it was AFTER his time with the tuskins
Really enjoyed this breakdown. I pretty much feel exactly the same way about this show. Hoping you all are planning to cover kenobi as well, subscribed!
We definitely will be! And fingers crossed that they do a better job than they did here.
@@certainpointofreview we can only hope so…my expectations are pretty low so it can only go up from here, right?? Lol
Appreciate the kind words. Agree on your assessment, our only hope is that Kenobi is another gem. #Fingerscrossed
God forbid this happens to the Kenobi series.

This review pretty much sums it up. 👍
The thing that bothered me most, was the amount of fan service in every other scene. Remember Cad Bane? Remember BD-1 from Fallen Order? Remember General Grievous' arm-spining? Remember that rod from the trash compactor in ANH?
I’m not complaining
2:00 You gotta admit though that it is cool to hear the theme again
What a fantastic video from such a small channel like yours. The only parts of the show that I find to be good after all is Cade Bane’s look and the theme.

The only problem I have for the inspector gadget power rangers is that they never once said it was "morphing time" or "go go gadget" before activating some bionic ability.
What fans want Bobba Fett? A few people living in mommy's basement? He's wack and insignificant.
Thanks for the review. The Book of Boba Fett had beautiful sets, choreography and costumes but was hamstrung by a weak and unfocused story.
You had me hooked from the first line! Amazing video and amazing channel.
Haha thank you! We have some fun things in the pipeline we are excited about, hope you keep tuning in!
He should’ve kept the helmet on it killed the mystique
Disney (probably correctly) realized that they couldn't have two helmted leading characters in two different shows... but agreed. Part of Boba's mystique was that mystery. I remember when I was a kid there was a rumor that was going around that Boba was female (obviously, an improbable one). But like, we didn't KNOW that wasn't true... impossible to know for sure. And that only made the mystique better.
@@certainpointofreview Or maybe just keep the helmet on in the streets and off when in his chambers and certain scenes etc.
This video is critical asset, worthy of recognition in the archives of the Jedi Order.
you should have been in the show
Reason why was because fanboys/girls expected him to jet pack out of Space hell go on a ravage killing spree and kill Rey Palpatiene.
But instead we got a rebirth story with God Father and Dances with wolves story.
Great dynamic having both of you speak throughout
Dude the only thing Disney wants the show to be is, profitable.
Nice video, hope you get more popularity!
Thanks! We do too haha. Appreciate the comment. :)
the quality of this video does not feel like it came from a channel with only 400 subs keep up the good work
It was a decent storyline.
Who ever created the mods and their scooters, needs firing , they don't fit in star wars at all .

Please make more content, love finding new channels
Imagine how interesting a morally ambiguous crime-lord or bounty hunter show would have been.

less than 1k subs and u have made a great video. high quality video, good editing and voice overs, definitely deserves more subs
The tusken raider scenes were really good.Y’all need to accept not everything needs to be over the top Jedi vs Sith

Original Boba also had a great voice, sadly removed.

How do you only have less than 1,000 subs?! You’re a great TH-camr keep up and your channel should pick up
This show really ruined the mystique of Boba Fett. It would've been better if they never did a Boba Fett show and just left him as a character that sometimes crosses paths with Mando.
Unfortunately, we have to agree.
He is not the hill I would die on for sure.
everything I’m hearing right now, makes no sense.
I don't call it a failure I call it not what it was hyped up to be
It wasn't bad but it wasn't what people thought it was going to be either
The reason: Robert Rodriguez
Too much control was given to a guy who hasn't made anything good in about two decades. He's way past his prime.
When Danny Trejo appeared... worse than Ed Sheeran in GoT for me. But yea, unlike with the Mandalorian, the rotation cast of directors did not serve this series well.
Alita: Battle Angel was good
I'm getting HEAVY Quentin Tarintino vibes from your editing... you've gained yourself a subscriber!
I thought it was alright, hated the biker gang though they were pretty cringe
Bringing Mando in was a mistake. Lack of character development. Lackluster action scenes. And more than one Director. The industry
has issues. There should be show producers & only ONE director. Anything different signals to me that there are problems.
Leadership, money, etc. I have seen from a very small number of critics that are good concerning this show. Most are really lame though.😆
True! Disney only did this just to please another casual fans. 🫠
Amazing quality content from such a small channel!
We will watch your career with great interest
Hopefully Disney rectifies this series next season.
Very curious as to whether there will be a next season. Plot-arc wise, I'm not sure what direction they would take the characters.
Sometimes it’s just the the Mandalorian season 3
Simple: they had one episode of dreadfully written material they stretched out to 6 episodes & 2 of them didn’t even include boba.
Disney writes things based on points they feel they need, not on the characters ie. “we need a portal, a cgi battle, a plane getting eaten by an alien, 20 snarky jokes, etc.”
Book of boba rarely had moments that werent blatantly idiotic.
On his own. WHERE WAS THAT CHARACTER?
for me the highpoints of the show make up for the rest it gets wrong.
I think its ok but no so bad or good, its lot of time better than the Rise of the skywalker.
I’m agree it could have been better but it wasn’t bad bro…
I actually liked it lot.
This is the best Bona Fett video review I’ve seen - and I thought I had seen them ALL - well done sir! I’m subbing now
Appreciate the kind words. Welcome aboard!
reason why I enjoyed it: The Mandolorian
There is no doubt that the Mandalorian was the best part of this show. I doubt I will ever rewatch any part of this series again, with the noted exception of Episode 5. That opening sequence alone... almost made up for the rest of the series. Almost lol.
I honestly loved the show and saw no flaws, besides maybe spending a bit too much time on Mando near the end. But other than that I definitely loved it.
Really you didn't feel even a little like boba was a chump in this I mean he acted like a straight up wimp compared to his real backstory
That's because it ain't Boba... cpt Rex came across Boba just before ROTJ and killed him then took his armour and ID 🤣
