Blind Faith only did the one album before parting ways, but the entire album is incredible.

Steve Winwood wrote and sang the song for Blind Faith - Some say Steve is singing about a break-up or the meaning of life, while others claim that it’s about war and death, or even drugs.
The song appealed to people in the now of 1969: the end of the ’60s, war, space exploration, and the ever-present uncertainty of life. I've always believed to let people take from it what they want… and what they need. You guys seem to always understand that; it's one of the things that make y'all special. If you
want a banger/rocker from this album, listen to 'HAD TO CRY TODAY' great vocals, and Clapton guitar.

I see it also as a metaphor for the state of the counter culture movement: I'm wasted and I can't find my way home. The high hopes and utopian dreams of youth were dissolving under a massive hangover and loss of ideals. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

Great ear! that British rock element is courtesy of Eric Clapton. Steve Winwood is one of the best vocalists of this era, and he is also an astonishing (and underrated) guitar player. But he became famous as a kid for playing Hammond organ. He toured with the biggest American blues acts when they came to the UK because there was basically no one else.
Everything he touches is solid gold. He is the most low key, unassuming rock God you will ever see in your life. He looks like someone's older brother who does IT.

Winnows started out with The Spencer-Davis Group. They had 3 big radio hits, "Keep On Running," Gimme Some Loving,'" and "I'm a Man." Winwood was age 16 when their first song was released. He then went on to join Clapton in Powerhouse, then he formed Traffic with Jim Capaldi, then he joined with Clapton and Baker and Grech to form Blind Faith, then he moved on to Gender Baker's Airforce. After that, he went solo

I remember the yet not well known Spenser Davis Group playing a small venue in my German hometown. When 'Gimme Some Lovin' came out, most people thought singer Steve Winwood had to be black.
Multi instrumentalist, singer, song writer, Winwood seems quite underrated today, perhaps he was not the typical front man, and more comfortable to sing from next to the drummer. A truly brilliant musician. Much later in L.A., I got to meet many music heroes of my youth, through my friend Terry Reid, one of the greatest singers / musicians, many people have never heard of. The guy who put Zeppelin together & more. There is a great version of 'John Barleycorn Must Die,' just Winwood and his acoustic guitar.

I saw Cream in 1968 and Blind Faith in 1969 and after being impressed with Baker's work on "Toad" I found the solo on "Do What You Like" to be much too similar which detracted from the song leaving the sense that it was merely a vehicle for a Baker solo rather than a legitimate composition with a dynamic impact like "Toad".

  • @CuriousGeorge1111
    @CuriousGeorge1111 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Thanks for playing one of my very favorite songs--so haunting, hypnotic, rich in acoustic texture, with a great metaphor, and beautifully sung.
In hopes of contributing to your excellent reaction, here is some context.
Winwood started as vocalist in the Spencer Davis Group, at some unbelievably young age, like 16. He sang vocals on some great soulful hits for them, then created Traffic, and added brilliant composer and musician to his resume. He then joined with Clapton to form the doomed band, Blind Faith.
Clapton had just emerged from the disaster that was supergroup Cream's breakup, which ended from conflicts between its star members, and the huge touring demands that the band had. Clapton wanted Winwood to join him and form ANOTHER, similar band, with TWO of its former members. Winwood said no, because the conflicts would remain, and the touring required of superstar rock band would destroy them, and allow them no time to write new material. Clapton talked him into it, and they named the band Blind Faith, for their baseless hope that the band would last.
Winwood was right, and the band disbanded after this one album, with this fantastic record on it. Here is an absolutely fantastic live performance by Winwood and Clapton, not to be missed: th-cam.com/video/8L82II1lNjo/w-d-xo.html
Winwood reformed Traffic, made some classic albums, then went on to a solo career in which he remained surprisingly relevant, and made a number of stellar albums. All very worthy of hearing.
Hope you enjoyed that, like I enjoy your insights, dedication, and enthusiasm. Peace.

My favorite Steve Winwood song. Beautiful song, beautifully sung. I heard some interview w/ Chris Blackwell (Fresh Air probably), who I think "discovered" or signed Winwood. He produced those Spencer Davis Group hits like Gimme Some Lovin' and I'm a Man (or maybe he was the manager?). He went to a club that had multiple rooms and heard Winwood from behind a door in another room. He couldn't believe a white kid was singing like that, cause he was just a kid then. Always a great distinctive voice. Chris Blackwell super interesting too, produced Bob Marley and bunch of other people too.

This is such an amazing song. In the 70s as a teen, I used to drive around with a boom box in the back seat. My Dad was Police Chief at the time. My sister and I would drive around smokin weed, so this song had meaning as well. Get straight then go home. My Dad knew I was a stoner and was cool about it. Just warned me to be careful because of his job. Plus I'm 4th of five. The older sibs were 60s trip takers. Guess they teed it up. Lmao My sis and I recorded this song for a radio contest. One guitar 2 part harmony. We came in 2nd.

You have to do this one that he did about 6 years ago at his home in England. Just him, a guitar and a fireplace.

Steve Winwood is in the Beethoven on Mt Olympus club of modern music. Neil Young, John Lennon. Roger Waters. Tommy Iommi. Jimmy Page. Pete Townshend. There are some key artists that when time passes on their influence elevates them. Immortals.

I remember hearing this song for the first time as a kid on an episode of 21 Jump Street. Johnny Depp was deep cover in a juvenile prison and this song played during some montage when he was having a breakdown. I must have been 11-12 and i NEEDED to find out what song it was. It hit me in the heart and soul even as a kid.

Slammin' album! Beautiful merging of the styles of Clapton and Winwood. Every song on this album is a groove! This is definitely a "sit and sip with headphones on" album! At this point, Clapton had played in The Yardbirds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, and Cream. Steve Winwood had been with The Spencer Davis Group and Traffic. Ginger Baker on drums also came with Eric from Cream. Ric Grech on bass was with Family. After this album he went on to team up with Ginger Baker in Ginger Baker's Air Force and joined Winwood in the next iteration of Traffic.

Steve Winwood did a solo album JOHN BARLECORN MUST DIE . He started as a solo effort playing all instruments but missed the musical collaboration so eventually most of the other Traffic members join in, continuing on Traffic's rock jazz fusion mix. Two not miss cuts from the album are GLAD and EMPTY PAGES. The whole album is outstanding. You Tube has a 2005 PBS Soundstage featuring both songs in live performances but you should also check out the album cuts.
Winwood and Clapton recorded LIVE FROM MADISON SQUARE GARDEN (2009). Talk about a concert.... I wished I could have attended they and the band are killer.

Hyde Park 1969 video is surreal. Seeing Ginger Baker’s cascading drums, along with the other greats is a visual feast.
    Highly recommended.
