Yep. My partner laid off at 52... 2 years later, still nothing apart from 1.5 months contract work. I think hes given up. Life has been shit since 2020. 58 yrs old and I got made redundant last October from the e-commerce sector, I was a Senior Programme Manager. It took me until July to find another role but I made the decision to go into the public sector and do a slightly different role where my skills fitted but I wasn’t involved in delivery as it’s soul destroying. Pay is a lot less but it’s not terrible and a lot less stress. LinkedIn is a waste of time as are agencies and other job sites… apply directly via company websites or give them a call even if something isn’t advertised. Try and remain positive, which, from experience is a challenge. Good luck

Good to hear you have your new role. As a career CS, 40 years, working in Digital, about to retire, the constant comparison between private sector delivery roles and public sector annoys me - where the public sector pay/conditions/pension is always raised. I am trained in Prince 2, ITIL, AGILE, member of APMP etc etc, and I know for a fact my counterparts in the companies I have worked alongside in delivering projects over the years have been on almost double my own salary. 10 years running without a pay rise is still a kicker. I'd love to hear your view on the comparison.

I think the key is to maintain your network. Each time I have moved, it is via network, not agencies etc. after 24 years with original employer, the shock of redundancy was hard, and I hadn’t maintained a network effectively. Since then, kept in touch and re engaged as required, and it paid massive dividends

LinkedIn is not a waste of time. I got my last job through it. They found me from a search. I've been a self employed contractor for years. It is really tough if you are the senior manager to take time out as you don't want to be replaced by the temp. It is a minefield as there is no loyalty from the company hiring you usually. Try another career taking your experience with you. Good luck pal, there are many, many older men in the same boat.

I do that on a freelance basis. I take care of elders or disabled in their homes- it gives the caretakers ( family) a break. Sometimes for a day, sometimes for a week to take a vacation. This is what works for me to maintain sanity and find some happiness in what can be a stressful time. a) looking for work regularly, but not every day. Looking every day can depressing and results in too much of 'the same thing' b) apply for jobs that are imperfect matches - one never knows what the employer sees - and they may have more latitude than they let on c) go for a walk every day d) read most days, and get the mind away from the internet for a while, and enjoy nature e) apply for survival jobs since its good to keep up routine, add to the finances, and do some networking f) don't be too hard on myself.

Anyone who's older and struggling to find work, start a window cleaning business. After 20 years as a packaging designer (in the UK) and at the age of 45, I found myself unemployable. I was getting interviews but no job offers. Desperate for cash, I started a window cleaning business as a stop gap. Knocking on doors, I acquired 40 customers in the first month. I never looked back. I enjoyed being my own boss and the outdoor work. It sustained me and my two children for 20 years. I retired 2 years ago and gave the business to a neighbour, who was struggling to find work himself. Do a good job and you'll keep your customers. The truth is that the jobs market is shrinking, although Governments like to tell people that there are more people in work now than there have ever been. Ghost jobs creates the illusion that work is avaialble and out there, which results in unemployed people questioning their skills, abilities and self worth. In my opinion the rapid increase of insecure work is a result of Globalisation. AI will also reduce employment opportunities over the next ten years. Society should be questioning why we have record numbers of people going to universities and racking up huge debts, who then graduate and end up working in the gig economy. If people need multiple jobs or income streams just to survive, society is on a very slippery slope. I wish you well in your search for permenent work.

I’ve worked for the CS for over 20 years and can attest to fact that the advertised jobs are real. They will do their utmost to recruit from within their existing resource first so if they advertise out it will have been a very considered decision to do so. I would advise even if you see a temporary post that’s suitable to apply for it because if you’re good at your job (especially HL IT roles), the CS in my experience will try to hold onto you. Once you’re ’in’ and make contacts those people will advise you of potential new postings and advice on how to apply more effectively and if your new work examples are from the CS then even better. Additionally I personally don’t think they age discriminate- they are ethical on that front in my 20 years of being with them it’s nice to see that new recruits could be anywhere from 18-60! Also yes definitely don’t waffle in your applications and keep them tight and tailored. I’ve helped on recruitment exercises in the past and it’s all about the *outcomes* of your examples and the *impacts* made. Anyway I’ll shut up now haha. Good luck!

stay strong man. I experienced the same nearly 2 years ago. I thought Id found a good job, fairly local so hardly any travelling...but after 2 months they got rid of me. I was given a days notice for meeting in which I was dismissed. Funnily I had a meeting with HR 2 days before that and there was NO mention of any issues they had with me. I suspect I was taken on to do some mundane admin work with the lure of the proper work coming later. They even messed around with my pay so my claim for unemployment benefit was delayed and I struggled with no money for nearly 2 months

It’s also very rare people are ‘let go’ lol that’s just scaremongering. The CS is massive and easily absorbs staff whose jobs have changed or if it no longer exists. If someone is let go in my 20 years experience it’s because they’re bad at their job and trust me you have to be awfully bad to get fired from the CS due to the strength of the TU and the department doing everything legally and by the book.

The reality is Britain has never really recovered from the recessions of the late 70's and early 80's. In the early 1960's unemployment levels in Britain were around 300,000. Just 20 years later this had ballooned 10 fold to over 3million unemployed as governments effectively closed down whole sectors of UK heavy industry and manufacturing. These higher paid jobs and the jobs they supported have never been fully replaced and the new jobs created have predominantly been lower paid/part time insecure service sector jobs.
Today unemployment still stand at around 1.7million (with 460k of these being 16 to 24 year olds) and this ignores the millions only working part-time who would like to work more hours.
Governments and the news prefer to talk about percentages of course; 4% unemployed here, 4.1% unemployed there etc, but this simply hides the scale of unemployment and is designed to make the unemployed feel it's their own fault for not having a job.
In 1970 4% unemployment meant about 500k signing-on, today 4% means around 1.5 million unemployed and looking for work and yet you'll often hear the news compare the levels of unemployment as being the same today as 50+years ago, it's not. Finding and keeping a job in todays Britain has never been harder..

I am actually happy as the role is a HUGE stress, it was a crap handover, no notes, and manager sending me messages "Has this been done?" and it was not covered in the handover, just constant stress, I don't need it. Told the agency I want minimum 6 month commitment and if its a case where the person leaving is going quickly with no notes, forget it, best contract was when I was supporting someone who had too much work, being left alone to do it all after a shit handover is not good for your mental health. The problem with civil service is the appalling pay and the total absence of benefits. The pension is held up as a great benefit, but it is tied to state pension age which I think devalues it massively as a benefit. Aside from the pension, there is basically nothing (unless you value season ticket loans and joke benefits like that). Compare that to good private sector roles where you can get higher base pay, bonus schemes, stock options, private medical, strong employer pension contributions (10%+), etc. I'd recommend looking at large private sector companies (retail banks etc) where you still stand a chance of being considered after 30-40 years of age... and avoiding the trendy (shit) little tech companies who basically won't entertain you if you are over 30. Apply direct to companies and do not rely on recruitment consultants, who were once useful but have basically become a total waste of time.

    • @MrBobsmith34
      @MrBobsmith34 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I don't agree about the pension. In a sense all pensions are linked to state retirement age because of tax treatment of early withdrawals and the civil service is no less flexible than most private schemes. The actuarial reduction rates for taking pension early are actually more generous in the civil service than most private sector schemes Employer contribution rates are almost 30% and because its defined benefits not contributions you are not exposed to market risk. To me the pension is a great benefit. There also the point that defined benefits are effectively undervalued when the size of total pot is assessed for tax purposes. If I had a standard private sector scheme I need to save well over 1 million in my pot to get the retirement I want which would complicate my tax affairs. I work in the civil service and I need to earn at least a additional £25-30K if I move to a standard defined contributions private sector scheme. An issue of course is that to gain full advantage of pension you need to join relatively young and build up years. In terms of other benefits I also argue that the leave at 5PM culture and the decent holidays are benefits.

Many don't learn English, coin in overtime and only ever about 3% English tops in some of these large companies, always looking for ways to oust you out even if u get a temp job in them, it's real eye opener and very corrupt, same in care sector, food places, many industries, it's British not welcome and foreign managers who have already been in these places 5-10 years, they recruit mainly their own. I've had 7 jobs in last year, they suck. I quit few days ago and I'm not a quitter but so sick of the ethics, I'm very over qualified but nothing in my industry for like 2 hour commute, I'm not 25 anymore...

Labour shortage mainly in minimum wage roles with high labour requirements I.e care. Immigration is necessary to fund the current pensioners (baby boomers) and care for them.State pensions are funded by current taxes, it takes around 5 workers to fund a pensioner. In the past 10 years pensioners increased by 2 million and thus immigration has increase by 10 million to keep up. We’re not having enough babies because we can’t afford it. Annoying I know

Honestly, I believe there's a ticking time bomb in that industry with AI advancing rapidly. Office jobs, as well as roles in banks and government where people work from home, are on borrowed time. These positions will soon be automated, with no need for people to sit behind desks anymore. In my opinion, it would be wise to diversify and explore a career where your skill set is more unique, as these jobs are oversaturated and becoming increasingly obsolete.

      @uniteallaction หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@ResoundGuy5 Ultimately, that's the most challenging part, but it could involve a combination of becoming self-employed and finding alternative part-time work, like I did. I've also included my previous post below, which goes into a bit more detail about what I did, so it might be worth checking out.

Banking has been decimated since 2008. Never recovered, many of the mid-level jobs were all automated in the years since.

@stevens1041 yep I would say within the next year or so the sector is going to be full of redundancies just like they're closing older storefronts on the High Street.

Would suggest buying and selling trading cards and other collectables. Just research what things are worth and head down to car boot sales. I spent £45 three weeks ago on three magazines and sold two of them already for £4850

There is a lot of bloat and nonsense with job postings now. Most of the job listings will either be:
-Internal without being told it’s internal but the company is gambling on finding someone better
-A fixed-term contract that someone who’s already working for is expected to reapply
-A job that’s already been given to a friend/family member
-A job that’s about to not exist and the position was someone who knows this with the company desperately trying to keep the post going
-A job that doesn’t exist but is actually three other jobs amalgamated into one due to “restructuring”
    -Stealth internship
-A job role that doesn’t exist but the interviewers will offer you a zero-hour contract version of the same role
    -Admin error
-Job posting from an agency that doesn’t exist anymore but they want the click-through numbers
-An article about training or volunteering… for some reason

Im a nurse 65 years old. Im planning on retiring in two years, but out of the blue, my supervisor is acting funny so im getting the feeling my time is short in this position. 7 years with good evaluations at a desk job. I dread having to look for another job at this age. There is serious age discrimination in the USA. Even for nurses.

Sorry to hear that. Good luck in the search. . I know a friend of a friend who lost his job; he's straight but actually does "gay for pay." I obviously don't recommend that, but it shows what's going on out there. These are tough and crazy times.

I was made redundant at 50 from my job as a quality manager in the wood working industry on £50.000/annum for a 35 hour week It took me 2 years to get back into work after getting a bus/coach license. I was on less than £20.000 for an average 60-65 hour week and had to move constantly to keep in work. Those last years of my working life was a real struggle and at the age of 62 I made the decision to retire early on my savings ... It was the best decision I ever made in my life. Don't tell me there's no age discrimination in the UK ... it's rife.

I will be redundant in a weeks time at the age of 58. I took VR for health reasons as I've been out sick for 9 months. I will take 6 months to get fit again and either study or get another job.
I'm not bothered in what field and as long as the pay covers the mortgage, food and spending we will get by. I can top it up a bit with the redundancy pay out. I will probably be calling in favours from contacts and, unlike the UK, the Irish job market is a bit more open.
Health is the most important thing for me just now.

Feel for you man. I’ve been freelance for about two years and in that time I’ve earnt the least I’ve earned since I was in my 20s. Hardly worked the first quarter of this year. Have tried getting FT roles in advertising and just don’t get interviews despite 30 years experience and willing to take a huge pay cut. I do feel that being a white middle aged man goes against you certainly in the Ad world. It’s such a rubbish time - I feel AI has reshaped my industry and I just have to accept that there’s not much freelance about and try and find a side line.

Wishing you the best for your application to the Civil Service. I would advise having a good read of the CS Success Profiles if you haven't already done so. In my experience Grade 6 & 7 job roles are heavily contested. My advice would be to detail check the job specifications and candidate criteria and weight your application accordingly. Sifts are anonymised and very strict on word counts. Good luck!
