When I was 7 years old or so I would get angry if somebody would comment "you're a piece down", I would rephrase this as "my opponent has an extra piece", just to emphasis too myself I had an army willing to fight left. I feel this child-logic saved me ALOT of games.

@@ChessCoachAndras It still works for me. In the example in the video the person is actually winning. But that is even irrelevant; these kind of evaluations play tricks in your mind, where all you need to do is find the move that gives you the best chances

I remember watching a GM game, I forget who it was, where White sacked both Rooks for both Bishops and went on to completely dominate Black in the middle / endgame. Marvellous play, and really hammered home the fact that piece values are not static things, but can change depending on the position. Rooks are better than Bishops, except when they aren't.

Was white the one sacrificing? Because your comment immediately made me think of the game Karjakin-Radjabov, Sochi, 2008 where Radjabov sacrifices two exchanges to absolutely crush Karjakin with black.
@@bustermadman8061 I just looked up that game and no I actually don't think that's the one I remember. It was a while ago and I'm not 100%, but I'm pretty sure I remember White saccing both Rooks for both Bishops, but White's Bishops end up overpowering Black's Rooks in the endgame.
Still, Karkakin-Radjabov 2008 was a nice game.

Great video! About 5 minutes in when talking about the candidate moves in the position, my guy saw all 3 of the same candidate moves as well, and as you my hand wanted to go for Qf6, and noticed there are fun complications with the pawn on d5 hanging, if white goes for that. I didn’t pause my video to think about it - but would have been good to unpack that line as well in the video. I’m sure that a lot of sub 2000 players would probably scrub Qf6 off their list as soon as they notice that their move leaves d5 hanging!
I cannot recall exactly but there is a famous Botvinnik game where he sacrificed an exchange to create a weak color complex on the kingside, similar to this game. Definitely a theme to remember.

Great video again, Andras. The nugget that I took from it is to always look for moves and/or a plan for your opponent when evaluating a position. That’s advice I’ve never heard before elsewhere (and I consume a lot of chess content!). It’s this kind of thing that keeps me coming back to your channel. Congrats on the 30K subs. I’ve heard that this is the point where for others (like Chess Vibes for example) where their channels really started to take off, so hopefully the same will happen to you. I know there are some, including myself, who rate you up there with the TH-cam giants like Danya, Rosen, etc. but tbh it’s a bit of a mystery why you don’t get more engagement. Maybe it’s just frequency of posting? Anyway, good luck to you and keep up the great content. 👍

There was a lot for me in this one - was pretty pleased with myself for coming up with the same three candidate moves as you did, although a bit worried that I didn't spot Bh3 in response to Re6 at all 😮 trying to evaluate positions and not just material is something I'm trying to work on - material imbalance is just not a comfortable experience (yet). For context I'm about 2000 rapid on lichess. Keep the great content coming!

Great lesson coach! I thought white was better because after Re1 he's going to push the e pawn and break open the position, but after ... Qf6 2. e4 Nxd4 3. Nxd4 Qxd4 white has nothing

I've turned round enough blunders in my time to keep fighting hard. However my positional understanding is nowhere near good enough to know when an exchange sac is a bonus (obvious tactics aside). Noting that in this position the 2 rooks are totally inactive is a golden nugget I hope to cling on to!

What was the plan for the candidate moves that were the alternative to the blunder? Seems like they all were general positional arguments.
Play the board and don't get played by sentiments. Constructive insight on how you can fight against a negative mindset
