    I had a 20” bar on my 046 which made for a nicely balanced unit. When I fitted a 30” bar it nose-dived on workbench so now setting saw down on ground like before it’ll have nose wheel in dirt. I should have thought about saw balance!

      Yes its something to consider but id rather take nose heavy then bending over indeed!

    We talked about this briefly on one of my videos. It's definitely a personal preference. A long bar is nice when you are cutting small, soft woods. But try standing up to buck a 16" white oak and you are going to be there awhile. Just doesn't work well. You need to set the dogs and push that saw through the hard wood. Just can't do it standing up. Better than a long bar is to find a way to get the log up and off the ground. Now that is a back saver! Good video and good discussion!

      @HomesteadJay  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey North Fork! Yes we did I remember chatting about it it! For me my 257 is perfect because I don’t have large redwoods around my area haha so the 28” bar I can buck almost anything! Anything hardwood that’s large I can cut 3/4 of it with this bar and finish with the echo 257! Good chatting

    • @travis2539
      @travis2539 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HomesteadJay That is my saw, right on. I have had my echo cs-590 for 12 years now. And i have even used a older 26" bar on it with no problems. It is actually a really great saw for the price. And i have had zero issues. I am picking up another one for my teenage son to run. But going to keep him with safety chain and 20" bar for now. A video on the topic of " If you only had one saw" would be awesome, especially for people getting their first chain saw for fire wood cutting.

  • @AppalachianLife
    @AppalachianLife 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Clearing up small trees and limbing like you are doing in the video a long bar on a medium chainsaw like the husky 257 looks like it may work. I normally am bucking 12' to 24 inch hickory and oak. I don't think a 28' bar would do so well on my medium chainsaw. It takes every bit of the power of my chainsaw to run my 20 inch bar.

    • @HomesteadJay
      @HomesteadJay  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey John! Thats exactly it! I run this husky for a set size of logs to buck up! I am not cutting 28" oak with this lol I use it for all my pine slabs I burn in my outdoor wood boiler and use this for bucking as you saw so its very specific for my situation!

  • @lowellwhite8810

    Well, that peewee stuff you're doing i do with my pruner saw (52cc w/12 inch bar). i see no reason to tie up a powerful high $ chainsaw with long bar and skip chain when i can do just about all i need with 20'' bar and full chisel. i am in SEast so lots of oak.

    • @HomesteadJay
      @HomesteadJay  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Theres a time and place for short bar indeed. If im cutting firewood poles in a pile or being held up by a excavator the shorter bar is key as its gonna cut faster.

    ey, as far as 50cc saws go, I got a older MS270 (snow flake/cold weather version) and a 550xp Mark II, the MS270 screams with a 20" 3/8 pitch round chain noooo problamo... Wether its falling a 20+ inch tree doesn't care... Its just happy to burn gas and hose me down with chips. As for the 550xp that one has a 24" SugiHara bar, runnin a 3/8" sprocket for the 3/8 pitch full chisel square ground chain. Let me tell ya... 50cc, don't have no issue with that sunk in a tree. However a 28" or larger I'd defiantly only do bucking with, without stepping up to the ol 60-70cc saws. But I'd definitively say a 50cc (at least the two I have) can easily handle up to a 24" for regular use( some felling, an a lot of bucking ) maybe a 2-4 hours of cutting a day. If its an 8 hr day I'd say, yep go with the big boy 70cc to sling that 28" + chip sprayer. But where I live about 90% of the trees on my land are 30" diameter or larger at the base. I don't feel like making 12 cuts with a 10" bar to make it happen if ya know what I mean. (cough... walmart pro saws.. cough)

      @HomesteadJay  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Gitty! Thanks for sharing your two cents on the subject! Around me I have a very young forest and a 20" bar is sufficient for all my felling needs on my CS-590 I love the long bar on the husky cause its my designated buckin saw I dont fell with that heavy lady haha thanks for chatting!

    I don’t usually run a log bar for limbing . I like it for bucking though. It gets pretty thick where I’m limbing and I like having a lighter saw that I have complete control over, especially when there’s vines and briars. You’re the only other person I’ve seen that carries while cutting wood. I believe you should always have a gun of some sort with you when you’re in the woods. Personally I like a revolver. No worry about the possibility of a jam, it always goes bang, and if it doesn’t, just pull the trigger again. Easy to do with one hand if the other hand is immobilized. No slide to rack (try clearing a jam one handed). 2 speed loaders (1 in each front pocket, in case something happens to one hand, I always can get ammo out of my pocket with a good hand) and a crimson trace on the grip. It’s surprising what comes to the sound of a saw. Bears are curious, and rattlesnakes/copperheads like brush piles, but my biggest problem has been a sick fox or raccoon. Before they start foaming at the mouth, they get super aggressive and will just run up attacking and biting at you. Another reason I wear chaps. Nice video, sorry for the long comment.

    • @HomesteadJay
      @HomesteadJay  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Denny! Dont be sorry for the long comment Ill chat all day long! I always bring my gun because I dont know who/what is out here! We live near the NH white mountains and safe to say theres plenty of curious wildlife! Ive been startled by a coyote and saw a bear cub just this year so yeah! Once i expand my gun collection I think id invest in a revolver for said reasons you just said. Id rather have it than not!

    Always run the shortest bar you can get by with. Why? Here is why, long bar and chain costs more every time you buy one, long bar reduces power, long bar is harder to control safety wise, takes longer to sharpen chain.

    • @HomesteadJay
      @HomesteadJay  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I respectfully disagree! I run a skip chain which has prob less teeth then my full house 20” on my echo! It also depends what you are cutting/bucking so the long bar is perfect for my situation!

    • @rickringler5021
      @rickringler5021 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As I said use the shortest bar you can get by with. In your case it is 20, don’t run a 24 if a 20 will do the job. Skip tooth chain is great.

    • @sticks7971
      @sticks7971 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree with homestead. Use the longest! Not shortest bar. Kick back with short bar far worse . Physics.

    It might be nice to us a longer blade, but there are some real downsides. The longer the chain, the more friction and powerloss. Also you'l need more oil . But that is not that bad. The biggest problem is safety. Longer blades tend to give accidental kickbacks when touching somthing at the far end, but even worse when lowering the saw gives you much more risk of cuttinge your own feet or leg when getting tired of the bigger weight and the londer blade. SO i do not realy agree with you that longer is bigger. If so, they would just make one long size ;-)

    • @HomesteadJay
      @HomesteadJay  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The longer bar on the proper saw is actually safer since your not bending as much and the tip is farther away from your head if there was a kick back

    That chainsaw you got looks small to us. That bar might help you out for them small jobs you do. It's not good to be running a chainsaw in the woods with a gun on your side you might fall down. You might get hurt.

    • @HomesteadJay

      Hey Mark! I always have it on me, not chambered for that reason though. I dont carry it one in the chamber for the reason if it gets hung up in the brush and gets pulled out of the holster or if I fell! There are a lot of coyotes/bears up here (NH white mountains) so yeah I always take it! Plus I never know if there is anyone out here who knows! Rather have it than not!
