- Residents in Phoenix, north of Durban, took up arms to protect their families and community after a spate of violence and looting gripped large parts of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. Fake news, vigilantism and a lack of police presence stoked the fires racial tensions in Phoenix where at least twenty people were killed during the violence.

Some of them were just racist thugs that got a thrill from taking advantage of the anarchy to kill innocent people. They must pay for their crimes. It must be a lesson to those that protecting oneself, family and property is different from killing unarmed innocent civilians whose only guilt was being Zulu and transiting through Phoenix. Two wrongs don't make a right. Not all Indians are racist but some are. Not all Zulus are criminals and thugs but some are. We need to be pragmatic that's what's missing in South Africa and led to this mess.

People claim about the massacre killings in Phoenix which is definitely wrong and unlawful. If 1st person got killed , why was there NO POLICE. If 2nd person got killed then why still no police. If 3rd person got killed then why still again no police. Again 4th person got killed then why no police. Now the death toll reached 200. Ask yourselves the question , from killing 1 person to 200 ppl no police whatsoever knew there's a massacre going out there and they needed to be there before the 2nd person get killed and also to arrest those involved in killing so that this killing or killing can be stopped instead of waiting for more n more n more ppl getting killed. Whose to blame for in all this. Before the 3rd person gets killed the police suppose to be out there to put a stop to this violence. It's common sense that police needed to be out there to stop this carnage from taking place. Which law abiding citizens wants to see all this happening. We have a district police station and they did nothing to put a stop to this killings. Actions has consequences to both the looters n killers when you do wrong. Instead of putting the blame on this n that just accept that police failed to protect and bring law and order to both looters n killers. No excuses.

Shame. The people of that township live in such bad conditions. I wish the government can help them in some way. I wish I was a billionaire yoh I promise you I will build homes for them. Proper homes with proper running water and schools and employment opportunities.
That's what the Indians don't understand these days. We came from the same circumstances. Our people have not taught their children the poverty the Indians in Durban were subjected to. We were living in these conditions until the building of Chatsworth because of the Group Areas act. The Apartheid government realised that poor Indians were living on valuable land as squatters around Durban. The rich Indians lost out as they sold their homes on the cheap but the poor benefitted from renting proper brick houses instead of squatting in shacks. That's the main reason the Indian community is split between the ANC and DA. The rich lost while the poor gained housing and low paying jobs. Phoenix was created to house the poorest Indians and overcrowding of Chatsworth that's why Phoenix has so little investment compared to other Apartheid "Indian" areas. The people living in the shacks next to Phoenix is the biggest failure of the ANC government who promised housing etc. Those informal areas grew out of the building of Phoenix in the 90s. It is disgraceful that they have to live like this. Moreover many Indian businesses are paying slave labour wage rates to both Indians and Zulus while they live in Umhlanga, gamble fortunes in Suncoast and Sibiya and drive fancy cars. Every community has to take a hard look inside and decide what type South Africa do they want. The politicians have failed. A new solution is needed. BTW I emigrated from South Africa because I saw this coming. I was born and raised in Durban like 4 generations before me. My forefathers and relatives built that city but I want nothing to do with it as I see the hate and negativity there. It's toxic.
