    Any rain jacket for any activity needs vents - that's the only way to release excess of heat and sweat (even shake-dry)

    DWR isn't marketing. For a WP/BR to be both at the same time you need the beading, once a material wets out (ie the face fabric is soaked) it can't breathe because water can't pass through water, just adds to it obviously. With beading some areas breathe and some don't which is better than 0 breathing. Abrasion rubs DWR off, if you have a non-shakedry hiking jacket you'll notice it wets out more quickly under the shoulder straps for example but reapplying isn't hard and only needs doing a couple of times a year with normal use. Shakedry has no face fabric so is less abrasion resistant, I know in V1 they said don't wear a backpack but not sure about newer stuff.

    Experiencing this in both the cycling and hiking worlds, I've found that waterproof clothing is only breathable if you control your effort enough to minimize sweating.
    High-end clothing is definitely breathable. But keep in mind:
    - If the clothing is impermeable enough to keep the rain 100% out, then it's impermeable enough to let out the high volume of moisture vapor you create with your increased effort.
    - If it's permeable enough to let out the moisture vapor you create with high-exertion sweat, then it's necessarily permeable enough to let some rain in.
    There's a saying I've heard in hiking regarding waterproof clothing: "You are going to get wet - it will either be from the rain or your sweat."

    DWR (durable water repellent) prevents the rain to stay on the jacket and prevent sweat-water to evaporate. Water is not breathable. If you havee a gore-tex jacket that's coated with liquid water, the breathable effect doesn't work anymore. Same goes for dirt on a jacket : the dirt prevents evoparation. If you want to keep your jacket breathable, you need to wash it with DWR Coating.

  • @Xarx42
    @Xarx42 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    So the explanation of gore material: yes, the water proof properties are coming from the material, but also from the coating. While the jacket will keep you dry from the outside, to get rid of (a bit of) humidity from the inside, while it rains, the coating needs to work. Otherwise the outer fabric will get soaked in water and consequently prevent any water transport from the inside to the outside. In any case its all physics. If the humidity is high overall eg, you cant expect the jacket will magically make the sweat disapear(because the air is already saturated with water).

  • @amishrider
    @amishrider 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    With regard to Gore-Tex...it is breathable or waterproof. Science says it can't be both at the same time but clever marketing labels use "and".
    FortNine (biggest motorbike TH-cam channel) did a short video on this exact topic a few weeks ago.

      good thing rain isnt full submersion. the underside and other areas wont be covered in water when it rains, so it will breathe in those areas. certainly is better than a plastic bag for that reason

    I believe it's only with Shakedry jackets they don't recommend wearing a rucksack. Also I think Shakedry jackets don't have a DWR coating it's the actual material that waterproof so doesn;t require it. Thats' what's appealing about them despite the cost is that it will always be waterproof countless washes later with no special treatment.

    My first pressure relief saddle was a Selle SanMarco short-nosed saddle, but the way the edges of the covering was finished wasn't neatly tucked in on the edges and it cost me a couple of pairs of bib shorts by wearing through the fabric on the inside of both thighs. I then went to a Fizik pressure relief saddle that was better finished and have no unusual wear spots on any of my kit after 16k kilometers in the past year.
