Very cool setup - while the idea makes perfect sense to me, I would've never figured it out myself if I needed to make a spiral (in particular the attention to the universal joints). Minor nitpick: At 4:56, that is not actually what a helix looks like from the side, a sine shape would be more accurate. A way to see this is to consider a point moving along the helix at constant speed (like the tool when threadcutting), then in the perspective on the right, it would be moving down at constant speed and swinging left and right sinusodially (since it would be tracing out a circle as seen from above), which will trace out a sine shape. But it was clearly meant as a side note anyway and doesn't really matter, and the important points were all clear.

Thanks alot for point that out. Those lines should be the tangent lines not the actual curve of the spiral. For more precise the whole helix is a smooth space curve. Only look like a sine in 2d perspective. I was trying to bring you the relationship of spiral & thread. Lucky me they're pretty much on point. So this's the example of always double check anything from the internet 😆.

The diving head and rotary table I have came from a machine built in the 40’s I think that actually had the gearing attachments to do these things using the power feed on the x or y axis. Very cool work you have done - the truth of mathematics is pretty cool to see it in action.

Very nice built. I don't know if it really matters (probably not so much because the result obviously works), but these universal couplings (cardan mechanism) introduce some inconsistencies. They do not transfer rotational speed constantly over the circumpherence.
That's the first thing I thought when I saw the setup, its pretty good (good enough for a chuck since the inconsistencies would be equally spaced) but not suitable for high precision work like if he was making a scroll compressor.
@@MF175mp Yup, he mentions that at the end of the video. Hooke joints' accelerations cancel when the end shafts are parallel and the joints are in phase. If you want to run in a non-parallel config, say to hob a helical gear, then you need CV joints, no way to make a Hooke work.

Why do I feel like I just watched a Richard Feynman lecture and understood every word? This man thinks his English "sucks." I can't understand a word when my primary care physician speaks, but a 33-year-old self-taught machinist in Vietnam spends 15 minutes explaining technical mechanical theory nails it without one extra word. I couldn't have done it. Amazing!

Trust me, anyone that's advanced enough to be trying to mill a flat spiral square acme thread groove doesn't need to hear anything anyway. They just need to get a glimpse of the right moment in the process that they can't get their mind wrapped around quite tight enough lol. Your English is fine anyway so I wouldn't worry about that, though I'd try explaining things less of just with fewer words in general just because most people don't absorb information like that. Least not ppl that are more mechanically or artistically inclined, and this may be machine shop, but what you're doing is no less art even if its mechanical art. You'll make a wicked engineer and of that I have no doubt!

So, there's another project for Cà Lem: make some small constant velocity joints. 😀

What you do maybe isn't all that complicated once the mind and ambition is present. But hell, you got so much energy and so much strive to make things that is complicated a goal to overcome. I am deeply impressed with your skill of machining. And you have a steep leraning cuver, and at the same time you make videos and edit. Cudos to you, I wish I had 1/1000 of your energy man!
