FINALLY TESTING STRATHMORE TONED BLUE MIXED MEDIA PAPER | Drawing a Butterfly on a Flower!

  • In today's video, I am testing out one of the new artist papers I got recently: the Strathmore Toned Blue Mixed Media Paper! Yes, I know, this paper has been out for a long time and I am just now getting around to trying it! Let me tell you guys, I was a little surprised by this paper, but you'll have to watch the video to find out why exactly.
    In the video, we demonstrate by coloring a flower with a butterfly on it with the Caran d'Ache Pablos Colored Pencils! These pencils work well for details but they're also opaque enough to stand out on toned papers. I think the choice of pencil was well-suited for the paper, but what about the paper itself? If you have tried out other toned Strathmore paper, you probably already have a pretty good idea how this paper might perform! I hope this video helps some of you guys out if you're curious about this paper!

    Thank you for providing the reference image I really appreciate that. I love how your butterfly came out and hearing the pros and cons of this paper. I actually have this paper but haven't used it yet but do in general like the vellum surface for colored pencils.

    So intrigued by this blue toned paper 😱! I knew someone who use tan paper before- really makes illustrations pop 🙌🏻. Like the tan paper- this blue paper is making the light colors in the illustration POP 🤩. The butterfly is GORGEOUS 🦋! I love all the details 💛🖤! I like the look of the subtle shadow background you made. Such a pretty drawing 💗! In the cover art on the cover I expected the paper to look more blue instead of gray 😯

      I loved toned tan!! I think this tone is a really useful one to have as well. It’s a shade of gray for sure though, not so blue! Ahh that’s okay, it worked out pretty nicely! I’m so happy you liked the butterfly! Thanks for watching😊

    Okay this is pretty cool, I know I'm still an art newbit but when I see stuff like this it blows my mind, The flower has a very realistic texture and I love how the paper doesn't bleed into the drawing
    Keep up the good work 😌

    Not sure if you've shared this before, but at 1:59 I was curious how you keep things organized. I have papers everywhere and I often want to go back to find something I've drawn for reference, and sometimes searching for that one sheet of paper could be like trying to find a needle in a stack of needles! So, curious about your own process of organization (if you have any). Thanks for the video!

      Oh gosh, it can be a mess sometimes! I just have a couple of those red file folders where I keep things like swatches, old references, scratch paper or sometimes unfinished artwork! That way they are all in one place but not necessarily in any order😆 thanks for watching!

    Lightfast and “hair” issue (from being recycled) is easily resolved by a coating of a lightfast pan pastel colour, or coloured pencil or even watered down acrylic etc…near to the colour of the original toned paper if that’s the colour you want as a background. Given the price of this paper it represents good value - it’s also great for charcoal drawings too.

    • @AlexisCassandraArt
      @AlexisCassandraArt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s true, the paper is a good value! I just want to make sure people are able to see what the tone looks like. Hopefully it came across ok on camera

    When working on toned paper…I use a white carbothello pencil or white charcoal to block out the tone before putting a color down that is more transparent…that prevents the tone of the paper from shining through.

    • @AlexisCassandraArt
      @AlexisCassandraArt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s smart! I assume just a light layer so there’s enough tooth left? I should experiment with that

  • @Nic0Dr4ws
    @Nic0Dr4ws ปีที่แล้ว

    A tip I’ve seen from another video is too make a layer of marker and then put the colored pencils on top so you don’t have as much of the hue from the paper

    • @AlexisCassandraArt
      @AlexisCassandraArt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wonder how well the paper takes marker- I'll have to try! thank you

    Just got this paper. I was hoping for a bluer color. It doesn't look quite blue, green, or gray, either. It looks more like a "muddy" gray. Oh well, now I've got it, so, it's tume to experiment with it . . .

    Many thanks for this review! I had not seen a review of this Toned Blue paper. It's interesting, so I know whether to try it or not. It seems to me that from what I see in this video, it's not a blue tone... it looks like a warm gray tone. It's a bit frustrating when the cover says Toned Blue...and you get a surprise, and see that it's not that tone. I have used the Toned Gray from Strathmore, what I like about that paper is that the whites stand out, especially when you use the charcoal pencils.

    • @AlexisCassandraArt
      @AlexisCassandraArt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, the tone actually looks more greenish grey to me! Very confusing. Even though this paper isn't very blue, at least its another shade of grey that is different than the toned grey, so there is some variety.

  • @BeckyTregear
    @BeckyTregear 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I’m watching this at night while wearing blue-blocking glasses so that certainly doesn’t help decide what colour the paper is! 🤣 I enjoy using toned paper, and yes it takes quite a while to build up colour and cover the toned surface. For the most part I try to include the tone in the artwork. I love how your drawing turned out, and the butterfly is awesome! I like it as is. 😊

    • @AlexisCassandraArt
      @AlexisCassandraArt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah yes, including the tone in the artwork is a good way to do it! The tone in this paper is kind of unique and I’d have to think of some ideas of what else I could use it for. Since it’s more of a grey, it’s pretty versatile. Thank you, I really do like how the butterfly turned out also, I think it was the most fun part of the artwork😆

    Polychromos white isn't very opaque, so I chose to buy the Strathmore Mixed Media 300S Vellum Surface White. And BTW, I wish I could have interest to draw things like that but my favorite reference right now are League of Legends Characters and Portraits of my favorite Kpop Idols

    Astonishing artistry and the decision to use the blue paper is one of the ingredients to this. I think that if one of less skill (me for instance) employed this paper, it might make a work I created more noticeable even if it is less artistic than someone else drawing on white, especially if I coordinated it with the right colors like how you did in this painting. Your art looks so alive.

    • @AlexisCassandraArt
