My Dad once put clay pipe in the ground on a steep slope where the water ran off instead of soaking in. I think the clay pipes were for lining chimney or maybe drainage...they were about a foot long and 6-8 inch opening. It worked. He finally got stuff to grow on the hill.
Those were drainage tiles, that used to be used for both septic and kitchen water drainage. Filled with gravel it would work wonderfully for that purpose.
I’ll be interested to follow to see how this works out!
Very interesting! I can’t wait to see the results.
Thank you Matthew for this information!!👍
Late catching this one. I hope you can save that beautiful tree. I love Japanese Maples, and you're right. They are expensive little buggers. Oh, and Osmocote is wonderful too. I use it on my potted plants along with water soluble. In the ground I stick to organic. Good luck! Get well little tree!
I have never seen one of those. Thanks for the great information.
I have this same tree planted in a similar area of my house. In 7b/8a Atlanta not on irrigation. A Fully mature tree. I just wanted to tell you my opinion based on my experience. That tree has been there a long time and is a mature specimen, so my thought is that unless something has drastically changed with water or sun , the drying leaves are most likely just seasonal and maybe a little due to a dry fall , but doesn’t mean it’s imminently in danger of dying. Mine looks just like yours, (it just started the past few wks. And I’m a bit behind you in my warmer zone). So I don’t really think you need to worry about it dying! And just make sure you aren’t getting too much water rt up next to your foundation! GL!
Thanks Matt.
Awe. Poor Maple. I hope you can save her. 💕
I am excited to see that Japanese maple in a couple of seasons. Cool tool to water it at root level. ❤
This looks like a great product! Thanks Matthew!
Great little gadget! Thank you Matthew! Blessings 💕🤗💡
Thanks for posting about this. Our property has a long neglected lemon tree (previous owners didn't do a thing to landscape the place and all the irrigation is broken), so this might be just the thing to help us water it deeply until we can get drip set up.
Thanks Mathew, good luck! 🎃🍁🍂💚🙃
I'm excited to see the tree come back to its full glory 💚🍁🍁🍁💚
Fascinating! Thanks for sharing!
Great video👍🇨🇦
Hi Matthew! That's an interesting gadget, I've never heard of, or seen, one before. I hope it works to save your tree! On your recommendation, I used Osmocote this year on my annuals and really like it. Thank you so much for sharing!
I need to do the same thing on mine, besides moving it to a new location 😅 i was waiting for a video like this! People dont talk to much about Japanese maples
Fingers crossed that this is good success 🤞🤞
What a great tool for trees to get them off to a good start. I'm also an osmocote fan for my annuals. I've never seen it used the way you did in the video or for trees. Good idea. thanks!
Great job on this video!
love when you do new product videos!!! I have always used milk cartons (with holes) buried in the ground for optimum manual watering; I will be trying drip next Spring for the first time...
I wonder, since you want to keep it in that corner, you couldn’t protect it from reflective heat off the brick? Perhaps you could secure some wood/mfd paneling on that section. You could paint it the same color as the siding so it would blend. 🤷♀️ Good luck with it, Matthew!
Mathew please talk about the zone for trees you mentioned and also the price for the trees you got in auction
Good morning Matthew thank you again so much for this great video about the Root Quencher. I was wondering if you would be willing to share the original content with us so that we could use it to promote the device. Robert.
Oh could work for my hydrangeas in Texas
❤
My beloved JM was doing very well, until one night. Deer broke all branches off. Only major left. I was heart broken when I saw that in the morning. The tree is still growing in barrel type pot, I cannot throw it, but cannot plant it this way either. My question: what can be done to make look fuller and healthier? It is growing well in a container, but getting too big for it. Is anything I can do for poor tree?
Several years ago I planted a Japanese maple in a bad spot. Not sure what I was thinking. I assumed I really needed to move it but now I’m wondering, do I just need to make sure it has enough water? your new property is beautiful. What are your thoughts on moving a tree that has been in the ground for probably five years. It’s not a very big tree, maybe a little bit bigger than yours. Every summer it starts of well and grows about 3 inches, but then, towards the end of the season, those 3 inches get burnt and lose all their leaves, and I typically end up cutting them off. 😢
I didn’t read through all the comments and questions. So sorry if this a repeat. Here is question - what stops the dirt from back flowing into the cylinder once the water is drained out? I was just watching Garden Answer and she showed how several of her new emitters got clogged.
I'm sorry, but I'm not sure I understand the question/concern. There isn't an emitter. The cylinder has holes in the sides and bottom and the water drains through those holes as the surrounding soil absorbs it.
Sorry for not being clear. I am wondering if dirt might/could flow back into the cylinder after the water runs own/down. I think that might be the same problem with the emitters - dirt flows back into the tube once it stops dripping. I wonder if your cylinder comes with a nylon sleeve similar to what some French drains have.
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
I noticed your gutter drainage system. What brand is this? Thanks!
I got it from Lowes/Home Depot locally.
Very interesting product. I’m curious,if it’s the wrong spot, why not move it?
Because it looks great there and the likelihood of killing a tree that has been there for 10+ years is extremely high in its already stressed conditions.
You should only move trees that are are completely dormant, especially a Japanese maple with that kind of caliper trunk. Winter time is the perfect time to move such trees.
💙👍🏻💙
What added benefit does this have over normal surface irritagation?
I'd position it as an alternative with the benefits of being able to add fertilizer directly to the root system easier and as desired. It's also beneficial for plantings on slopes and/or hills where surface runoff would be a concern.
Curious. What size auger is that? Noticed they only have 3” on their website but that root quencher is 4” diameter and you said the whole was wider than the quencher.
They have augers up to 9” wide on the website. There’s a width selector at the top of the page.
@@TheSouthernersNorthernGardengotcha. Must be out of stock then as I tried that slider and they only have 2” and 3” options. Thanks for confirming!
We planted 2 maples in spring and they were doing great until about August and one of them lost about half its upper leaves. Didn’t realize at the time they don’t like sun.
I think they planted the Japanese Maple a little too close to the house 🤷🏻♀️
I would never put a slow release non-organic fertilizer next to a tree that is stressed or about to go dormant.
To each their own, but I’d encourage you to read more about Osmocote. It doesn’t release fertilizer when the temperature drops below a certain level so it’s not going to be fertilizing the plant after it goes dormant with our incoming cold temperatures. But, it will pick up in Spring as soon as the ground is warm enough for it to work.
I think Osmocote is organic. Am I right?
