It depends. Sometimes the open strings, sometimes the fretted strings, sometimes added strings. Nobody said it would be easy, and it is not. Normally you also play the 5th open A string and the 4th open D string because those notes D and A are notes in the D chord. You can fret the 6th string too at the 2nd fret to play an F sharp note which also occurs in the D chord.
