Finally, I had a chance to explore the great falls up close, actually as close as you can get: I walked down from the Niagara Falls Fallsview Casino to the Niagara River from where I had a great view of the American Falls. Just a few steps further I reached the Canadian Horseshoe Falls, the larger of the two. I had a quick lunch in the Table Rock Center and then headed into the basement where I started to explore a series of tunnels that terminate in two portals located behind the falls. Viewing the power of these majestic waterfalls from these openings and from the outside viewing platform is a truly awe-inspiring experience.

i remember doing the tour when i was a kid. had a blast. nothing beats grabbing a hotel for a couple days and hitting up the casinos, marvel city, the great canadian midway, and doing the tours and the maid of the mist and unwinding like a kid again

It is amazing how much you miss if you live here. I spent the first 12 years of my life here, swam in Dufferin Islands, and my father played a part in the design of the first Maid of the Mist ever used. I miss my home and whenever I visit via internet I get homesick. Thanks for this Video, it really took me back and provided excitement that I took for granted as a child.

Sometimes I'm glad I'm old. I can remember when you were allowed to walk all the way to the ends of those tunnels and lean out over the barriers. Directly above you, water was roaring over the brink. To each side, the great wall of foaming water curved away, and of course, so did the cliff. Below you, water was splashing into huge boulders the size of railroad boxcars. It was thrilling! I guess erosion has made that view too dangerous now.

Last time I was under the falls in the 1970's everybody wore yellow rain coats and visitors were allowed past that barrier and outside the falls onto a large deck area , the Maid of the Mist would cruise by a toot its horn , I visited castle loma that same summer as the falls .

ABOSOLUTE AMAZING, I did this trip in 1998 with my parents and just used this video to show others what it was like. So your video was part of a home school program to show an 11 year old in Georgia what the falls sound like.

I live close by Niagara Falls & during the late 70's when I visited, the gates were much closer to the edge of the portal. If you stuck your arm out, you could actually feel the water on your hands. In this video, you can see where the gates were bolted into the wall of the tunnel. I was disappointed a few years ago when I went again that the gates had been moved so far back.

Glad I took this tour in 1961, when you could walk to the end of the portal tunnels and look up to see the rim of the falls far above, and look to either side to see the great curve of the horseshoe, and you could look down and see the huge boulders being pounded by the wall of water. I guess if you don't know that was once possible, this might be okay. The tunnels were orginially designed to give tourists a much more thrilling experience.

Comedic Beans not really cause you behind the falls its only mist the falling water is far out. too walk out would scare the hell out of me I would be shaking but when you lay down so much of your body is on the ground that you feel safe. standing or sitting at the edge with you feet dangling would be nuts !

Pretty much. I went there with my family, and the initial plan was to spend some time on both sides, but everyone said not to bother with the US side because there is very little there. And as you said. the Canadian side has the great view of both falls. The view from the US side pales in comparison.

Ha! We already did! thats why Canada is a sperate North American nation. I believe very little if any portion is left from the original 1819 treaty on the American side. As I said the US did have a portion but most of it was filled in to create Terrapin point on Goat Island.

No I think pretty much the whole waterfall is in Canada. Even with all of the horseshoe the border still isn't fair. If it were, half of Goat island would be part of Canada. I belive the US did have a small portion of the falls but its since been filled in.
