I came upon a video for the Gathering about 2 months ago by pure chance. They played Strange Machines at Pinkpop 1996. Anneke van Giersbergen's singing totally blew me away. Since then I have found a lot of material by the Gathering and they are now one of my favourite bands. They have so much talent and Anneke is now my all-time favourite female vocalist.
There is a semi accustic version of The Gathering songs. Like Fountains reminds me of my dads struggle with alcohol and depression. He died of these issues. This song comforted me in some kind. Ir provides hope but is still very sad.😅
About the lyrics, message, and mood... I pretty much agree with your interpretation of the meaning of the lyrics, but I wonder if maybe the combination of this being a reunion concert plus Anneke just ALWAYS loves singing and can't seem to stop smiling for long when she does... I think some of that comes through here. I sometimes feel like songs are connected or have "sequels", and to me, "Waking Hour" is kind of like an answer or sequel to "On Most Surfaces". At least that's how I see it.
Anneke is always smiling when she sings. There is a semi accustic live Interpretation of "like fountains" by her singing. It reminds me always of my dad who lost his battle to alcohol addiction. There is a different face Expression.... And it is a great song.

Very somber and bombastic music. Not my cup of tea. But, the singing was impressive!
