I had been playing this game for about 1½ years and had been beggin my mom to let me use her credit card to purchase the guild card(to go online) and she continuously said NO. She finally gave in and said she'd buy me a one year subscription for my 14th birthday...in September of 2003. The servers last breath was to be the end of October '03. I was sad and frustrated and just said to forget it...
I played Ep 1&2 offline for years for the same restriction(mom didn't want to pay) and watched those servers fall as well. Some unforgettable times nonetheless. The best.

To me PSO is a time capsule, it represents to many of us (its cliche i know) a world pre 9/11, a simpler time of our childhoods/teenage years where it was all about Amazing video games and the Disney Renaissance ect. The world contained in PSO is a place frozen in time, it has not really changed since it first came out in late 2000-early 2001 and the people in it while older have not lost the kindness or the friendships still contained on Pioneer 2 or Ragol. It in my opinion is the same way people feel about the world in Shenmue, a place from long ago with many fond memories and good friends that we may still keep in touch with or are just a distant memory. It also to me represent the end of the "Glory" days of video gaming where video games in just a year or two would fundamentally change in tone and philosophy in game design for the worse and is when many of us had to start to "grow up"

@@itsstillthinking1999 Now that i think of it, the game came out in a era that was good for a lot of us, my step grandfather was still alive, i was a happy kid in general. i loved all my friends and neighbors, i even had a friend who only came online like once a month because he enjoyed completing all the offline missions, he was so dedicated to it he had cool weapons no one else had at the time... the PAN was hilarious and he even gifted it to me... and that was the last time i saw him... then 1 hour later i died and my PAN was dropped (before the weapons drop when you die was removed) and someone stole it from me. i remember it churned my stomach because next time i see him i had to explain.... and i never had the chance to

Man, I could cry watching this. The memories are all flowing back so fast. The old HUD, the old pause menu, the slightly different font in the chat bubbles, the old store menus, the resolution, freaking out because I can type to my friends 3 blocks away through my console late at night... those were the days, we had so much fun. Countless amount of hours wasted on this game. My first real online gaming experience. I love this game.

I see this gameplay and... I see memories flashing back hard like a waterfall, fast like lightning but slow enough to close my eyes and re-live those moments again. As I travel back in time, I see all of those happy and simple days of the early 2000's. I had a Motorola Paiger, I was a Freshman in High School, I used to take the public bus to school, I used to hang out with a crew of friends who were all gamers and, we were into TES Daggerfall, used to draw concept art for a game we were aspiring to make using 3ds Max and Unreal Engine 99. I used to fall asleep listening to Yngwie Malmsteen or Pantera on my Sony CD Walkman, etc.. Now, I'm 34 years old, Ive been through 1 divorce, I'm the proud father of 2 kids and so my journey continues on this earth. With a knot in my throat and tears in my eyes, Id like to say that time flies in a blink of an eye. Don't be afraid of doing what you want to do. Living with regrets and child abuse isn't easy but, it's easy to overlook your inner potential and not work towards a better self-future. Video games, till this day have always been mt escape. Well, I kinda lost myself there. In a nutshell, I too was there on the last day of PSO.

I swear, this lobby tune stayed with my anytime that I wasn't playing...
And when the holidays would come by, the way that it would show in the lobby...but nothing beats the standard lobby music. So much music to enjoy, but the track that resonates with me the most is, "Mother Earth of Dishonesty [Part 1]. As soon as the track started, I was hooked and couldn't look at another game.

I was so much in love with this game ! I was 13-14 years old when it was released.
I still have the Dreamcast complete system and kept all my memory cards with the different types of characters on it... I have all the special armors (like the "chuchu rocket" one) and some very cool mags (the little critters flying above your shoulder) and my favorite weapon was the spreed-needles gun.
I was so mad when the servers was gotten down. This game was way ahead of its time with the collab gameplay and should have benefited a real online data service with updates like the majority of the games are now but the technology at the time didn’t allowed this... :(

Wow this footage deserves to have a place in a gaming museum at some point, I think. Having been born in the late 90's, I never got a chance to play this during its run, but I'm still getting nostalgic hearing the music and seeing the visuals. This is probably the epitome of multiplayer gaming during the 90's and early 2000's for me - a memento of an era long gone, but fondly remembered.

the wiiu/3ds servers went down last week. i was there watching everyone play their last matches and let me tell you, when the official servers for online games go down for good, it truly feels like the end times for these worlds. everyone comes together and celebrates what they had taken for granted before the end. i never played PSO sadly, my father never let me have a dreamcast. i bought my own long after these servers disappeared. i wish i played this game during its prime, because this game is truly gorgeous and atmospheric as hell.

  • @A-m-K
    @A-m-K 10 ปีที่แล้ว +40

You can play within 10-15 minutes if you want, no matter on PC or on the Dreamcast or Gamecube.
    1. The PC Version (PSO Blue Burst) is exactly the same, first time i played back in 2005 i was skeptic, but its the same fantastic game, only better. It not only has the complete EP1 and EP2 (with all its weapons, enemies, items ect) , but also a totally new Episode, which is the Episode 4, and which means new Levels, Enemies and also a lot of new weapons and items which were not in EP1 and EP2.
You can also play with Controller and even have more shortcuts as in the console Versions, up to 9 shortcuts instead of 3, which is so much better and much more comfortable. And you can even attach the 9 extra keyboard shortcuts on the controller with a programm.
Also, you dont have to play in fornt of your PC Monitor if oyu dont want to, because if you connect your PC or Laptop with a big flatscreen like i did its not only like in the old days without losing its charme, its even better, and still feels as if you play on console because you play with a controller on the TV!
For the PC Version (PSO Blue Burst) you just have to download the game from schthack (google schthack website), download maybe takes like 10 minutes, while downloading do register a new account. Then install it and thats it, just plug in a controller, no matter if any PC controller, PS3 or Xbox 360 controller, and the fun begins!
    2. The DC Version is prolly a lil bit more complicated, but depends on if you have a modem or a broadband adapter, but both still work. With a BBA adapter its prolly osmething like 10 minutes until you can start to play.
You can either play also on Schthack server, or the DC only server named Sylverant. On Schthack you can even play together with PC players, but not with the Blue Burst players, but the PSO EP2 PC Version players (which was released before PSO BB).
At the sylverant website you can even download a file which makes everything for you. You download the file, burn it on CD, put in your DC and thats it, it connects automatically with the server and all, and then it says "put the pso game in", you do that, and then you can play!
    3. The NGC version isnt hard to setup at all, but it would be better if you have an Broadband Adapter. I think the biggest PSO Gamecube community is also on Schthack, allthough not near as much people as Blue Burst, which has by far the most players.
But i will tell you, once you installed and played Blue Burst you dont want and need to think about the NGC and DC versions anymore, because its exactly the same Gameplay wise and all, but only better with much much more content, as i said you can play with controller and even on a big fat screen if you connect your PC or laptop with the TV.
What you waiting for? Go and play PSO Blue Burst!!!

Even the intro gives me goosebumps. I recall buying PSO for Gamecube at Walmart along with the dialup modem in 2002 or so. It was arguably the best gaming purchase I ever made. This was also the first MMO I ever played. The music, gameplay, just something about all of it was so perfect that transported you to a different world more than even most modern games can. I was sad to find out they had taken the servers offline. The in game economy was ruined thanks to item duping. So many people in the lobby gave me free rare weps! lol Good times!

I know this is a really old video (in more ways than one), but I just stumbled across it. This game brings back so many memories for me. Two years of my life in high school were spent playing this game, well over a thousand hours, the timer was maxed out. I hooked up with so many girls in real life after meeting them in this game haha. Also met my best friend to this day, we're in our mid-30's now and still talk all the time, I was in his wedding a couple years ago.
Also, there was kindof an early hacking/modding community, that I was somewhat a part of, using GameShark hex codes to be able to add colors and the ability to swear in the chat, and also to FSOD people's screens in a defensive manner because there were these clans that would basically invade open games almost Dark Souls style and try to screw with you. There was this whole underground thing happening, that most people never saw. So many memories man
