    Actually, the movie was filmed in Widescreen because it was a theatricaly released film, as well as Mickey's Christmas Carol (as you mentioned)

    The widescreen was how it was shown in theaters even though it was filmed in 4:3, that is how they would release animated films into theaters. They were cropped, but it was done for theatrical release of these films. The only one that wasn't cropped was The Peanuts Movie in 2015, that movie was filmed in widescreen.

    I have not seen this movie in ages, and it was a fun movie. This movie was first released on home video in 1980 or 1981 on VHS and Betamax by Paramount Home Video, and it came in one of the blue flap box cases in which Paramount had it at the time, same with other earlier titles for example “Charlotte’s Web”, “Saturday Night Fever”, “Airplane”, “Grease”, “Popeye” and a few other earlier titles had the blue flap box cases which was used from 1979 through 1982. The opening had the “Acid Trip” warning screen, the 1979 Paramount Home Video logo, the incomplete 1975 Paramount “Blue Mountain” logo, and the start of the film.

    I'm pretty sure the 4:3 VHS was an open matted transfer. The original theatrical release was in 1.85:1 widescreen, so when it was transfered to 4:3 on VHS and Laserdisc, it would reveal "non-important" picture information that was cropped off in theaters. This DVD, while isn't exactly 1.85:1, is probably a better representation of the original theatrical release, and I prove my case further by also noting that none of the credits ever take up the full 4:3 height on the VHS/LD but they fill up the widescreen height perfectly.
    I know nothing about the other recent Peanuts DVDs, however.

      +thepirategamerboy12 That's a pretty good point. Really, the overall enjoyment of these films is definitely not lost for me despite the cropping. It's just a minor issue that picky people like me like to comment about.

    This and Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (And Don't Come Back!) should've been released on DVD long time ago like around the past decade (when A Boy Named Charlie Brown and Snoopy, Come Home were released on DVD), and instead of the full screen and widescreen versions having their own DVD's, watching the movie in full screen or widescreen should be an option when you pop in the disc.

    My friend Norton Buffalo (RIP) played harmonica on this. Considered one of the best in the world at the time.

    According to the information I have seen, the film was released in 1977 in an aspect ratio of 1:85:1. Technically speaking, that is a widescreen release. I hear this DVD aspect does not even match that so it is kind of bizarre.

    • @JsBluRays
      @JsBluRays  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Duke2363 Well, that makes it even worse then. I think they just made it to fit with modern widescreen TVs so it would appeal to the younger generation who may otherwise complain about the black bars on the sides. But, who knows. You'd think it would be easier for them to just leave it in the original aspect ratio(s). It's quite annoying, to say the least.

    Are you certain that all of the Peanuts films were created in 4x3? The reason why I ask is the first film was released in '69 and 2 others were in the 70's. I know Bon Voyage was released in the early 80's. Weren't at least some of the movies initially released in theaters in widescreen due to that 1.85 and 2.35 scope were pretty much prevalent releases at that time?

    • @JsBluRays
      @JsBluRays  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jason Zaroff I read somewhere that they were all full frame initially. And it's easy to compare this one with the VHS release to see that the top and bottom are cropped out.

    • @Dr.Sarcasm
      @Dr.Sarcasm 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I follow you. It's just weird that a movie would be released in full frame in theatres.

    • @JsBluRays
      @JsBluRays  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, you know, maybe it was released widescreen in theaters and they wanted the DVD to match that. I have no idea. But I do know the VHS is full frame and it would have been nice if they could have included both versions. I would have paid extra for the option.

    • @Dr.Sarcasm
      @Dr.Sarcasm 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably so. Some live action movies were shot full frame open matte, to be cropped for widescreen. However, some studios ended up releasing them as full frame and you can sometimes see part of a boom Mic in a shot (but was intended to be cropped out for widescreen). But, you do have a valid argument because I can't see why Melendez would want his team to draw additional art to never be seen. Basically, I am curious if someone at Paramount could settle this once and for all.

    Does anyone know where I can find the DVD slipcovers for the peanut movies?

  • @christiancountryboyilovejesus

    Why not just put both aspect ratio's on the DVD and let you choose in the options manu? Also I believe the theatrical trailer was on some of the VHS tapes. God bless 😇

  • @Duke2363
    @Duke2363 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah it's in 1:78:1. I don't get it. I think they did the same with A boy named charlie brown and snoopy come home. Both of those were also 1:85:1 theatrically.

    • @JsBluRays
      @JsBluRays  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Duke2363 Snoopy Come Home is by far the most confusing for me because the intro with credits is in full frame (black bars on the sides) but then abruptly goes to cropped widescreen for the rest of the film. I guess they couldn't crop the intro without it looking awkward with words on the screen, so they left that part as-is. It's quite awkward when you watch it again and realize what they did. It's just...why. Why would they do such a thing?

    • @Duke2363
      @Duke2363 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know it is bizarre. If I remember correctly in a boy named charlie brown where linus is singing the I before e song parts of the words that appear in the background are cut off on the screen as well
