      And I agree, a lot of South American, Asia, and African ancient history are left out in most curriculum studies.

      @@SevenInAll I remember getting to college and taking college world history courses, and thinking to myself that I really had never studied the history of South America or sub-Saharan Africa much at all before, and Asia had just been represented by a little bit about China and India, and absolutely zero about Australia and the rest of Oceania. I've always been determined to do things differently with my kids!

      This is exactly what we were going for--my mom and I brainstormed all about what we have appreciated most about a number of different history curricula we have used, thought about some of the struggle points in implementing them and worked to solve those struggle points (i.e. our "Key Ideas" for notebooking and review--when using lit-based history curriculum, this can really be a struggle, having pointers as to what were some of those main ideas we want to pull from the readings).

    Looks amazing. Really outstanding. What are your plans for continuing history, do you play to release a time period per year? Is this scheduled 5 days a week? Are the picture books scheduled over multiple days? Is their a worksheet per day? Thanks!

    • @SevenInAll
      @SevenInAll  9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      At this point, I would like to continue and create a medieval history, but I am not going to promise a release schedule because as an extremely small business and a mom of young children, there's just some level of uncertainty as to how much I can do and how quickly I can work in the spare moments. Also, I want to wait to see whether this is really something the homeschool community sees a need for--if I only sell 10 or 15 copies, I will learn that it's probably not what people want and it's probably not worth the investment of time to continue. So ultimately the decision comes down to practical factors like that.
      It is scheduled for 5 days a week, although I myself usually do history only 4 days a week, I will just adapt (having it last for 32 weeks gives wiggle room for adapting the schedule).
      With the picture books, it really depends on how long they are or the style of the book. Some of the picture books make sense to read in one sitting, while others are longer and get spread out over 1-2 weeks.
      The activity pages aren't specifically assigned with 1 per day...they are scheduled more as needed or as it makes sense. Some topics are simply more interesting or more suited to activity pages than others. Every week has a quiz and a map drill, and typically 2 or more pages in the student book. There is a free two week sample you can download on the website to give you a more detailed look.

    Rachel I’m so excited for this. I know the books are mainly found in English BUT do you know IF any of the titles come in Spanish? Thought I’d ask so I could save some time digging 😅. Thanks!

    • @SevenInAll
      @SevenInAll  9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      The Sharuko book is bilingual and the Duncan Tonatiuh picture book version of the Quetzalcoatl myth is available in a Spanish edition. Those are the books for Central and South America, so not very surprising. It should be doable to find some non-fiction books about the more "popular" topics like ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome for kids, but it might be quite difficult to find titles for some of the other ancient world cultures and tales. I don't know if you already follow @homeschoolaventuras on instagram but she has done a fantastic job of finding history books in Spanish to add to their history studies.

    I have been racking my brain and researching like crazy for what I want to do with history/ geography / and science next year-mostly history. I literally prayed about it before I picked up the phone to yet again get back on You tube for research. This was the first video that came up when I clicked on the you tube app. I didn’t even put anything on the search bar. If that’s not a sign, I don’t know what is lol.
    I will have a 5th grader and a 1st grader next year. I wanted to find something they could both use together. And I wanted it scheduled for me (bc I’m currently in a season of being tired of making my own curriculum and lesson plans because I can never find that one thing that fits my needs. But even though most curriculums say “k-8th” or whatever, they are just too exhaustive for what I’m looking for. I just wanted them to have an overview they both could understand this year and study some world geography along with it. I think this could truly be the answer to my prayers. Thank you!

    Im so excited about this curriculum especially the picture books to make it all come to life! Im thinking about doing this with my second grader and curious kinder with my young kindergartner. Do you think that's too much?

    • @SevenInAll
      @SevenInAll  9 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I think what's 'too much' really depends a lot on the individual homeschool -- I personally LOVE reading aloud, it's the highlight of my day, and my boys thrive with it, so we naturally include a good amount of reading aloud.
      In my own homeschool, there will be overlap where I'm using Curious Kinder and Ancient World History at the same time--how I make it work is that I have two read aloud sessions in a day--one early morning over breakfast that includes my younger son, and a 2nd read aloud session late morning, just before lunch, that is focused more on history/geography for my oldest, and my 5 year old doesn't stick around for that one.

    Was wondering about the Kingfisher History Encyclopedia. We have a much older edition (1999). How compatible would it be?

    • @SevenInAll
      @SevenInAll  8 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I haven't seen that edition but my guess is that it would be pretty compatible--I know there are quite a few editions. Sometimes they slightly change the page number/order in different editions but the content stays largely the same--I would think you might just have to adjust as you go, if, say, their page on the Qin Emperor of Ancient China is on pg 74-75 instead of 72-73 (I am totally making up those page numbers, I don't know what the page numbers are, haha). Like I mentioned, I try to make the topics really clear on purpose so that different books or different editions can be used.

      Yes--it can be adjusted 'up' or 'down' pretty easily within 1st-6th grades. For younger students, I would skip chapter books and might skip Ancient World: Art to keep it more simple.

  • @nrabjlnd
    @nrabjlnd 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    I have a couple of questions.
    I’ve looked a bit at Sonlight for history/Bible/ literature. How do you think this Ancient world history compares to that?
    I know you have experience using Gentle and Classical Primer, how do you think Primer would pair with this? I don’t think Primer covers history, but I didn’t know if it would be too much to pair them together.
    What age or grade would you recommend this for? I’d like to do a classical approach to history beginning with ancient and moving to modern, and my son will be 6 and in 1st grade this Fall. He is already reading at a second grade level, would that make a difference for when to begin this curriculum?

    • @SevenInAll
      @SevenInAll  9 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      Sonlight doesn't have a year that is specifically focused solely on Ancient History. Their B level (roughly 2nd-4th grade) and G level (roughly 7-9th grade) include a lot of Ancient History but it's not the sole focus, they also move into medieval history. They use more of the "spine" type of non-fiction books and don't really use the picture book approach that is used here. Sonlight also doesn't include activity pages or a student activity page. They do have discussion questions and mapwork in their guides and using their markable map. Those are some of the differences between their approach and this one.
      G+C Primer, as of now, focuses on classic tales and does not include history. I do know Erin is updating and creating a new edition of Primer this year, which I think will include some nature science, but I don't know what all will be different. Using the current edition of Primer, I never found it to be much reading--it's one "Wonder tale" every week or two, 1 poem at a time, one artist and composer you're learning about for 12 weeks, so it's more focused on the "riches" subjects and could be used alongside something else for history.
      For my son, who will be in 2nd grade when we use this Ancient History, I do plan to continue using G+C Morning Virtues resources for our "riches" subjects of hymn/composer/artist, etc.
      Most of this isn't really going to require reading from the student, but generally being an advanced reader does tend to tie into being more advanced with comprehension...so if he's overall more on the 'advanced' side and has a good attention span for books I think it should be a good level. This can generally be used for all elementary grades (with more parent help on activity pages for a 1st grader, and with adding in the recommended chapter books for s 5-6th grader). I'd say typically 2nd-4th is the sweet spot, but an advanced 1st grader could handle it.

    Wow this looks amazing! I’m curious whether this and/or the resources in it take a Christian worldview on these historical cultures (besides the Psalms study sections)?

    • @SevenInAll
      @SevenInAll  9 วันที่ผ่านมา +8

      The books listed in the booklist are all secular, they are not from a Christian publisher.
      I have a Christian worldview myself. There are a couple of notes/activities in the teacher's guide that point out differences between the Christian worldview and the worldview of the cultures we are studying, for example the clear difference between the Ancient Egyptian practice of buying treasures in the tomb, and the Christian belief, based on Jesus's words: "But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal."
      But for the most part I think the "Christian worldview" in studying history simply comes in as: I believe God created people, and he created them to be intelligent and able to invent fascinating things and develop interesting cultures. God gave us minds able to learn about human history and it's a subject area worth learning about. Human history is largely the story of people NOT living in accordance with God's plan and God's instructions for living well with others--there is a great deal of tragedy and loss: wars and injustice and pursuit of power at the cost of the lives of the powerless. History is naturally a heavy topic, but one worth studying.

    I have 2 boys in elementary. They will be in 3rd and 5th grade next school year, which is when I'd be interested in using this curriculum. Do you think this would still be able to work for my 5th grader as well? We like to do as many subjects as a family subject since I have 2 other kids, preschooler and baby.

      Yes, this is designed to be used family style. With older students, like a 5th grader, I would definitely look at adding the "further reading" book suggestions (that are toward the bottom of the grid). Those are chapter books and non-fiction books. Also, a 5th grader's work in notebooking or completing the student work is simply going to look different than a 2nd or 3rd grader's work--it should show more skill and mastery. That is one of the great things about notebooking, is that students get to interact with the material at whatever level of skill they have.

      That's great that RightStart is now available in Spanish. Unfortunately, because this is a literature-based resource that relies on books that are not available in Spanish, this is one resource I won't be able to offer in a Spanish edition.

    So I want the art curriculum for myself 😂

      I can pretty much guarantee that every parent who isn't already an art professor will find themselves learning new things in the art curriculum! We couldn't find a child-friendly 'book' for learning about the art of the ancient world...so we ended up having to basically write one ourselves. My sister is a licensed art teacher who is currently a graduate student pursuing a Master's degree in Fine Arts--I have learned so much from her and the way she brought ancient art to life in these lessons.

    Do you think a 1st grader is a bit too young?

    • @SevenInAll
      @SevenInAll  9 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      I think this would be a bit much for many 1st graders--I think 2nd-4th is probably the 'sweet spot,' but a more advanced 1st grader or one that was naturally very interested in history could probably handle it. I will be using it with my son for his 2nd grade year.

      @SevenInAll Thank you! That makes sense. I really want to her to be able to engage with it. What the heck do I do for 1st grade?? Lol

      @@monicaraney5649 hahaha--that is indeed the question, isn't it?! I am in the early stages of working on a 1st grade literature program that is the "next level" from my Curious Kinder program. :)
