THE INTRODUCTION LESSON:
(1) ACTUALLY, while we often say "KAmusta", the right way to say it is "KUmusta", as written on the screen. It's from the Spanish "Como esta", which also really means "How are you?" There's no actual translation here for "Hi" and "Hello". We just adopted them. Meanwhile, to be strict about it, it's supposed to be "Ikinagagalak", not just "Kinagagalak". The "I" is said so fast, it becomes silent-sounding that's why she said "kinagagalak". Anyway, that's is deeper Tagalog. She sounds like a textbook saying it like that. People don't really say it anymore, just in books and by old characters in movies. You can say "Natutuwa" instead. That also means "Happy" in the present tense.
(2) There is no direct translation for "PO". "OPO" is the more respectful version of "OO", which means "YES"...The addition of "NG" to a word serves to shorten a sentence. For instance, a more formal sentence would go like this: "Ikinagagalak ko na makilala ka". "NA" here means "TO", so "It's nice to meet you." To shorten the sentence, you rid of the "NA" and add the "NG" to the previous word (it has to end in a vowel, otherwise, the "NA" is required). "KAYONG" need not be applied only to "all of you" -- it can still be for the singular "you", but the person should be older than the speaker. Or someone of higher authority or position. It's a sign of respect as well.

Wow, I have a big respect to you Ovela for trying to learn how to speak our language. I'm sure more Filipinos will love you more, in tagalog- "sigurado ako maraming Pilipino ang mamahalin ka ng sobra".
Placing “po” is actually more complicated than it sounds.
You have to identify first if the sentence is incomplete or complete, is the sentence in question form? Or in statement form? You also need to locate the pronoun and identify them (first, second and third person).
For incomplete sentences, these are categorical answers, “Yes” “No” “None” “Left” “Right” “Straight ahead”. You add the “Po” in the last.
Yes = Opo
No = hindi po
Left = kaliwa po
Right =kanan po
Straight ahead = deretso po
In statement form sentences these are literally statements, “I’m hungry.” “They’re here.”
“Po” are added before the pronouns for statement form sentence
I’m hungry = Gutom na ko = Gutom na po ako
“They’re here” is third person,
They’re here = andito na sila = andito na po sila
For incomplete and question form sentences, “po” are added after the first pronoun and before for third person
“Me?” “Have you eaten?”
(Note that the word “kayo” and “sila” are plural and refer to group of people, but in formal filipino we used it to address singular subjects)
Me = ako? = ako po?
Have you eaten? = kumain na kayo? = kumain na po kayo?

Third person plural is used when speaking to elders to show respect. But you can also hear elders using third person pronoun when speaking to younger stranger as a sign of respect. If an elder person doesn't use third person to address strangsr, that is fine. But it is disrespectful for young people to use second person pronoun when speaking to elders.

Just to add: PO is used when addressing someone of higher authority/position in a company (like boss) or place (like owner), even status (which is subjective). The plural forms KAYO/NINYO (YOU, second person) and SILA/NILA (THEY/THEM, depending on sentence construction) may also be used on such a person or a stranger as a sign of respect.
"Sino po kayo?" / "Sino po sila?" - May I ask who you are? / May I ask who they are? (The PO and plural forms make all the difference in the tone. Asking such a person "Who are you?" WILL sound rude.)
"Ano po ang kailangan ninyo?" / "Ano po ang kailangan nila?" - What can I do for you? / What can I do for them?
In addition, let us take note that there are some parts of the country that do not use PO and OPO. Doesn't make them rude, it's just not part of their specific cultures/traditions. They speak respectfully in other ways.

I was literally rolling after hearing ur reaction with the "Hindi" which means "no". Everything was really funny, but u did great (to answer ur question in the last part of ur video bfore saying gudbye). Just to give u some tips, we dont "usually" say the tagalog terms in numbers. When u go here in the Philippines, it's okay to say them in English. Many of the Filipinos also dont knw how to say most of the numbers (20 above) in filipino. Another, u can just greet everyone in English, say gudbye in english, say excuse me in english because everyone can understand it (maybe few cant but thats not sure). If u say them in tagalog, u'll be appreciated much - just expect laughters from people (the laugh means "awww, so cute"). If u speak in English, just dont forget to say po, to again, sound formal. English words plus po sound nice. Hihihi. Ph loves u and ur channel so much. I didnt notice i finished the whole video. ♥

U didnt notice that u can just say "Ako po si Ovela." instead of saying "Ang pangalan ko ay Ovela.". It's okay. I personally prefer the latter. U sound really nice and cute.
Good job learning our language, Ovela. Take note that in Filipino language, "kung anong bigkas ay siya ring baybay" meaning, it's pronounced the way it is spelled. Let me also add that, the connector 'm' is used if it is followed with letters p & b, not just p (ex. Pang bata = pambata, means, for kids) and lastly, 'kUmusta is the correct spelling and the proper pronunciation of the word but 'kAmusta' is acceptable pronunciation too. Maraming salamat for taking time to learn basics of our lingwahe. ☺

the connector "ng" is changed to m when the next consonant is p or b; we drop the "g" when the next consonant is d,l,r,s,t; otherwise you retain "ng" for the rest of the consonant and vowels.

Hi Ovela! If you find difficult to pronounce "ikinagagalak", you can use another term, "masaya". Masaya akong makilala ka. It's nice to meet you or I'm happy to meet you. Different words but the same thought.

Kumusta Ovela?
The first and most important thing you have to learn about the Filipino language is that it only has five vowels.
A - like how it is pronounced in Apple
E - like how it is pronounced in Egg
I - like how it is pronounced in Instant
O - like how it is pronounced in Ovela
U - like how it is pronounced in Balloon *oo
Also, All Filipino Words are pronounced as they are spelled and syllabicated. No silent whatsoever.
C is pronounced as K so Cake is said as Keyk.
F is pronounced as P so Final is said as Paynal.
J is pronounced with DY so Journal is said as Dyornal
Q is pronounced as KW so Queen is said as Kwin.
V is pronounced as B so Value is said as Balyu.
All the other consonants are pronounced the same.
Also as mentioned, Filipino words are pronounced Syllabicated. Like Kumusta. It is pronounced in its syllabicated form Ku-mus-ta.
You just have to figure out how a word is syllabicated so you can easily pronounce it.

YES, we do understand taglish or even just english, BUT we forgot to give importance to our own language, the Tagalog Language.. slowly the next generation of Filipinos will forget the whole Filipino language. .. sad but true :-(

The objective is to facilitate communication. Ovela cannot speak Filipino fluently. We cannot impose on him our language. With the limited time I assume he will be spending in the country, only basic communication skills is required.
The opposite is actually true. Statistics released early in 2018 says Thai high school students are now more proficient in English than new college graduates in the Philippines. You may have noticed that about two decades ago local TV stations started to broadcast foreign films, tv series and animation videos dubbed in Filipino. They did this because the market changed - viewers no longer had a command of conversational English. And so, they had to dub them in Filipino. Kaya nga nosebleed ang tawag natin pag nagpilit tayong mag-English ng medyo mahaba. In fact, some schools and practically all call centers have EOPs (English only policy) enforced inside their premises to counter this downward trend. Dito lang sa comment section na ito makikita mo na mali-mali na ang grammar at spelling ng mga Pinoy kaya minsan di maintindihan ng mga ibang lahi ang eksaktong ibig iparating ng mga nagiiwan ng mensahe o opinyon.

Most Filipino words are derived from the Spanish having been a colony of Spain for 333 years. If not for the Philippine-American war that took the lives of many Spanish speaking Filipinos and removal of Spanish language in our highschool and college curriculum, most Filipino would still be speaking Spanish as well as Filipino. Also Filipino in general id derived from Spanish, Malay and Arabic. Filipino is not just Tagalog but also include Cebuano, Illongo and 15 or so dialects.
Incorrect! Most? Only nouns that have been introduced to the archipelago are Spanish rooted. 80-85% of Filipino languages are not Spanish related thank you!

ovela, i noticed that you mispronounced the words when you try to read them fast. however, when you try to read slowly you tend to pronounce them correctly. also, most of the filipino words are stressed in the first syllable. example "araw" is pronounced a-raw not araw (with the stress in "raw").

It's KUMusta and NOT KAMusta. It's a common error of most Filipino Citizen here in Philippines. I teach Filipino Subject that's why it is being pronounced by the way the word is spelled.

Kamusta is just a variation..di dapat ini-invalidate ang pagiging "tama" o pagiging "acceptable" ng ganitong paraan ng pagkabigkas. Accepted ang dalawa. Conversational po ang uri ng Filipino na kailangan nya. Hindi pang major sa isang language teaching class.

Marvin, you're right. It's KU-MUS-TA NOT KAMUSTA, 'coz kamusta was pronounced by youngsters and old folks in some Tagalog Regions, and many are using it nowadays as Colloquials. Basically it comes from the Spanish words "Como esta". Either pronunciation is accepted. I guess when someone is teaching Tagalog to foreigners it should or must be the Basics, and emphasize the Colloquial equivalents to avoid confusions. For me, I always use Kumusta or Musta, never kamusta. And I never use "F" in Pilipino 'coz it's Spanish spelled, derived from the name of King Felipe of Spain, thus Filipinas, afterall there is no Pilipino or Tagalog Words with letter "F", except of course for our names given by the Spaniards. Just a thought. Salamat, Daghan Salamat, Mabalos, Shukran, Danke, Arigato. LOL!!!

And if you want to sound like a real Filipino... like in informal greetings, the phrase "magandang umaga", we just abbreviate it to, 'gandang umaga, 'gandang hapon, 'gandang gabi but you can also add "Po" to make it polite. And to answer the phrase "salamat or thank you, instead of answering "walang anuman or you're welcome", we usually say "wala yun or we shorten it to " 'la yun", w/c means " it's nothing", we omit the letters "wa". Just like in "kumusta ka? (singular) or kumusta kayo? ( plural) or how are you?, we just say, " 'musta? or 'musta kayo?, and we answer it like, "ito, ok naman or Ito, ok lang" literally means, "here, just ok" or "mabuti nman - just fine"... just an additional tip. Hope this helps too...🤗

'ng' is only connected if the previous letter is a vowel. For example, walong tinapay (walo=eight ng=connector tinapay= bread)

“Kumusta po? Ako si Erica Reyes."
Adding “po" in the second sentence to sound as “Ako po si Erica Reyes", would make the whole thing redundant. Well, to every Filipino, it's very polite and seems like there's nothing wrong when we say, “Kumusta po? Ako po si Erica" but just like I have mentioned, it's redundant, as per Balarilang Filipino(Filipino Grammar).
Moreover, currently there was a proposition to not include Filipino subject as mandatory subjects in College. But the example mentioned above just only prove that there's so much more to learn about Filipino subjects

The -ng after words like 'marami (many), maligaya (happy), puti (white) (and other adjectives that end in a vowel sound) is a shortening of the word 'na' which sort of translates to 'that is' or simply 'that' in English. For instances, when we say "Maligayang araw," it's actually a shorter and a more appropriate way of saying "Maligaya NA araw" which literally means "happy day" or "a day that is happy." When the adjectives end with a consonant such as in "DilaW na buwan" You can't really shorten in to "dilawng buwan" because it would sound awful. So we just keep the na there. That literally means "Moon that is yellow" or simply "yellow moon." This rule basically works for all adjectives. So you can understand this better, you can try using english words to this construct. (These are basically colloquial taglish phrases.)
"Happy na baby = A baby that is happy or simply A happy baby"
"Closed na door= A door that is closed"
"Sad na man= A man that is sad"
"White na light / putiNG ilaw= A light that is white/ white light"
This is basically how you use adjectives to describe things in Tagalog.
