Dungeons and Dragons Lore: Famous Wizards of Greyhawk

  • So who are all these wizards who have spells named after them in the Players Handbook? Let's find out!
NOTE: In the early days when D&D was forming its lore, player characters were often behind the spells which had names attached to them. In the early days, the game setting for a lot of them was Greyhawk, so, that is where the majority of the spell names originate. There are a lot of famous wizards from other worlds, perhaps one day I will make videos about them as well.

We had a homebrew spell called "Bigby's vibrating fist" when cast on a target such as a tree, person, or wall it would vibrate the target for one turn doing 5d6 damage and stunning any living target such as the person. Several mages could combine their spell and try to weaken a castle wall for siege damage. Wal really fun to cast it on a person and shake them out of their armor or see the contents of their bags shake onto the ground. Yes we were about 12 when naming the spell.

Mordenkainen can get a cameo in _Baldur's Gate: Descent Into Avernus_ - by befriending a bearded devil who suffered a brain injury that turned him chaotic good, he will lead you to a great plane-hopping tower where the archwizard resides, and you can meet him. However, Mordenkainen himself is hiding safely in the heart of the tower to avoid Zariel's assassins, so you only meet a simulacrum of him. Still, it talks and acts exactly as he would, right down to his belief in The Balance.
In that situation, if any PCs mentioned anything about redeeming Zariel in order to liberate Elturel, Mordenkainen would immediately try to dissuade them from doing so, and to choose another method. Of course, he wouldn't actively try to stop them if they choose to remain on that course.

I recently finished reading all the “Wizards Three” articles by El Greenwood where Mordikanin, Elmanister, and the drow Wizard from Krynn/dragonlance would meet in his home ant talk magic. And it seems what all archwizards have in common is that pompous arrogance and self-importance for sure no matter the world or fun background. Woe be the day if a humble one is ever uncovered. But I guess it fits with the whole, “Scholarly know-it alls that can break reality” motif of wizards.

Man, you're really inspiring me to throw one of these wizards into my game as a quest-giver, or something.
Such as... PC, you have a friendship with this hermit by the name of Drawmij, perhaps he could lend you some sort of aid with this predicament you're in... if he isn't too busy with his obsessions.
And then only provide magical help in the form of unusual items granting a spell he was (secretly) known for creating.

Wizard is my favorite class, so hearing about several of the original archmages, especially those who were to some degree played by the founders of the game, is great! Not to crap on any that were just made as NPCs, or authors' self-inserts; I write those up in between campaigns regularly, but it's cool to see those who actually experienced the game; the events of whom were conducted by a Dungeon Master, and the results of dice, and role-playing, instead of just the power of the pen to say "because I wrote it that way!" It's also fun how some Wizards can literally change their worlds, but their spells are what survive them, and keep them living on in our memory.
I sometimes look at spells with their creator's name in it, and wonder what provoked them to make it? It might be a spell you can only cast once, and so you never even got to enjoy it, or cast it to be certain that it worked. One of my own favorite such 2e spells was Mycontil's Last Resort. Basically, it works like the retributive strike of a staff of power, but in 9th level spell form, converting all of your remaining spell slots into energy, and blasting you, and everything around you, in a monumental explosion. You just die, and are obliterated, do you probably aren't coming back, and everyone else takes a boatload of damage, though why you'd cast this spell when you still have numerous spell slots left I don't know. To dip vack into FRCS, I also liked several Elminster spells, but was particularly fond of Larloch's devastate undead, which obliterated one of his minions, of which he had plenty, and regained him health, which undead can now find tricky to do, in 5e.

some really frustrating thing in d&d is that we see all those famous wizards that prolong their lives with magic but the only option we see in games are crazy or extreme withs like lichdoom. Exalted there is the trafic of drugs that starve off old age, by half so if you take all your life you can double your lifespan and this is just the most common and cheap in the Age of Sorrows. There is ways to introduce such options without making it commonality even in high fantasy settings; there is a 3ºparty necromancy spell of the 5th circle that must be cast daily and have as component a drop of blood of a creature of young age. Even if you think of necromancy as innately evil and want to impose drawback in those circunstances, at worst the creature who's blood is used is aging in your place will lose what, one day of its lifespan? You are commiting one of your 5th levels spells but for a wizard it is acceptable in his day to day bases and it can be seen as a subtle poison, higher levels versions of it take weeks then years and finaly outright kill it to reinforce the caster's lifespan and regress aging for some years. I ordinary talented wizard toke 30 years to reach level 9, to extend his lifespan he resorted to this spell and openly present this spell to his fellows and search for voluntiers, rewarding them with a single gold coin wich is more than a commoner make in a week, for a single day of his lifespan that he will not even get to expend in such a violent world. Even if there is resistance against necromancy this spell is so harmless and tempting for wizards and those able to pay for such services, wich would be significantly powerful people, that only the more zealous of societies would be able to censor it. But slowly those wizards will become more powerful with a extended lifespan and more busy, cast it daily is a chore, so they use more powerfull versions of it, but even then days slowly slip by until finaly they are at the end of their lifes...now I ask you this, how much the life of the plebe is worth to a level 20 millenia old arcmage? Lichdoom would fall out of popularity among human wizards and the number of powerful and ancient spellcasters would increase making a interesting implication for human society. It also would be in the interest of society to keep powerful once in a generation warriors that achieve max level, they would be national assets.

WARNING: a fairly longwinded recollection of games past...
A couple years ago, in the campaign I run, the players (well, their characters) walked into a tavern to see four men arguing. Two had pointed hats, of which one of them gestured wildly with a long smoking pipe. the third was bald with a pointed black beard, a look of intense seriousness on him. He and the pipe smoker were on their feet whispering loudly and gesturing towards the last. The last was seated with a kerchief wiping away something near his mouth with one hand while holding a staff with his other. He seemed odd, with discolored skin and eyes that seemed off but, none could say exactly why (failed their perception check). Had they seen his pupals, they might have run out screaming. Words such as "Weave" and "fundamental" and "reality" were overheard. The Bard of the Player's group (a first time player only on her 4th game) knew they were all wizards though. After all, the fourth member of the group, the one studiously ignoring the argument and picking plump sausages off the plate between them all...His hat said "Wizzard". The group didn't approach, as the business of Magic made most of them a little nervous.
After that night's game, the new player asked me if that was Rincewind. She was a huge Pratchett fan. I nodded and inwardly chuckled that the other 4 members of the group, professed encyclopedias of D&D didn't pick up on anything. I made a new player giddy with laughter, though, so I call the entire scene a definite win.
