I never figured out whether Phil Ligget was trying to observe omerta, or whether he was just the most naive guy. He always went out of his way to insist that riders were largely clean and would be happy to peddle whatever excuse was made for unreal performances.
One important discernment to make is that he is primarily an announcer, rather than a journalist. His job wasn’t to expose what was obscured by omertà, but rather to commentate on the surface-level happenings of the sport. Plus, why give his employers and related organizations bad press by bringing up the dark side of the sport? He’s a team player, for better or for worse.
@@peterconnors5259 yes I guess you're right. He would often reference doping though, always acting incredulous that the riders could even be accused. I believe today's commentators would be more realistic in their assessment. Liggett was like a kid, refusing to even consider that Santa might not be real.
