I remember the audience in-house reaction to the original mounting here was palpably enthusiastic and positive. It was only outside the theatre that I heard all the dissension that I think motivated the revision. Personally I had a great time seeing this version and I still have the audio cassette of the recording. Christine Andreas leaves me breathless. And I know I'M in the minority for preferring the 'You Are My Home' as it was in the original production too, between Marguerite and her brother Armand before their execution. Deeply moving.
This is my favorite song ever! I really hope to see a live performance of this show someday. I'm obsessed with the story (books, movies, musical) and music. I even named my cat Sir Purrcy Blakeney. ^.^
Oh, the original production simply cannot be beat! My mom, a lifelong pimpernel fan took me to the original production on Broadway when I was eight. I fell in love with it and it is still my favorite book, movie, and play to this day. It's a shame they've rather butchered the newest editions of the play. At least we have this!
I got to see the touring cast with Doug Sills. I agree that I'd love to see a film adaptation. Always thought that this book and libretto was superior to Les Miz.
I loved this play so much. (And the book, and film versions) The performances were astounding and the music memorable. I think I have nearly every song memorized. I went with my High School class to see it in 1997. I wish they'd put a full filmed performance from the original cast on DVD. Maybe for the 25th anniversary in 3 years. Thanks so much for this clip!
This is my favorite broadway show, cast and score, but with the switch to Rex Smith as Chauvelin and saw it on broadway repeatedly. So sad when it closed in 2000.
Can I just say how sad I am Marguerite hardly got any screen time? It’s probably my favourite if not one of my favourite songs in the musical but dang...really wanted the camera to focus on her! That dress was amazing! (Not to mention she’s my favourite character)
The first time I saw this play was a high school play and they did freaking AMAZING but Apperantly they weren’t allowed to record it which is ABSURD. But anyways this scene was AMAZING. They had a spinning floor in the middle and at one point whoever’s turn it was singing was in the front, and then they had all the background characters playing as chess pieces on the tiled floor and just oh my gosh nothing can compare. I wish I could watch it again😭
Would you have a full copy of this musical? I can't seem to find anything else other than the German ones and the bootleg one, none of which I could understand.

I prefer You Are My Home between Armand and Margurite too

My cat was a Percy too. I'm holding him in my picture.
Your cat's name is the cutest goddamn thing I've ever heard. I hope you're doing well in life. 😺
@@thermos_kenn2492 I am! Sir Purrcy is too! ❤️
Terrence Mann was amazing in this role.
I know I’m in the minority-but I’ve always loved this score
Thank you for posting Spiderwoman!
A very enjoyable score.
Me too! I saw it at Lincoln center a few weeks ago and I’ve listened to the soundtrack non-stop since then.
I love it, too!

Terrance Mann, a man of many talents, still with us in our 💕
he's still alive
The entire original Broadway album is my favorite. I wish they made this a movie musical. I would have loved to see this.

God I love the original Bway cast and this song.
The biggest flex of my life is seeing this with the OG cast on Broadway ❤

I love this score and these actors, but they need a bit more dialogue coaching.
