The most famous disputation or debate was held in front of King James 2 of Aragon in 1263 in Barcelona.
The disputants were Pablo Cristiani for the Christian side and Nachmanides for the Jewish side. Cristiani was indeed an apostate-a "Jew" of the Jewish Voices for Peace type. Nachmanides-not to be confused with Maimonides-was a highly respected Spanish rabbi. Most of these disputations were phony-about as real as a modern day professional wrestling match. The Jewish participants deliberately "lost" in order to protect themselves and their communities from Christian fury. However,in return for the promise of his life and well being, Nachmanides accepted the challenge. In other words, this debate was for real. (King James apparently wanted a real fight-confident that Cristiani would defeat Nachmanides and thus discredit Judaism.)
In the event,Nachmanides ran rings around the apostate destroying his arguments and making him look like the ignoramus he was. King James was forced to reluctantly declare Nachmanides the winner and gave him a promised monetary reward. In the end however,he was unable to assure his security and Nachmanides had to flee for his life anyway. He ended up in present day Israel where he founded a synagogue in Jerusalem in 1267 and ,thus, formally re-established a Jewish presence in Jerusalem. And,if I'm not mistaken, that synagogue still exists today-the Ramban Synagogue.
Of interest,Jewish authorities always did their best to avoid these disputations-and still do-since they were in a no win position. Winning frequently meant expulsion or death. And losing meant the discrediting of their faith.

The Philistines were a people who vanished, and there is no connection to the new nation formed in the last century, who are basically refugees from Arab countries.

When you have nothing to lose, you have everything to gain. Those medieval communities knew that fighting was their only option to live in such a hostile environment.
But when your ego is big and your faith is little, grandiose ideas like savior complexes clouded with self-interest can muddle your judgement. Then certain community leaders can butter up to their oppressors - driven by both good intent and egoism.
Most important lesson to learn: keep your ego as small as possible. Especially when you become a leader. Trust in G-d. Overestimation leads to tragedies and disasters.
Having said all of this: never fully trust anybody who believes in a theory that aims to replace you. No matter how much they smile in your face or sweet-talk about your religion. Trust in G-d and the wicked among them will be dealt with. And certainly never kiss up to the enemy. The world may scream, but eventually respects strong, religious Jews who fight back without apologizing. Much more than appeasers, who are only seen as weak.
