4K CABVIEW: Northern Lights seen from the train 😮😍

  • First time I've seen the Northern Lights from the cab in August!
    Seeing the Northern lights in August is quite rare this far south in Norway. But lately the activity has been pretty crazy with the "the lights" being visible almost every day.
    On this trip we start off in Bergen where I have to pic up the train at an unusual location and move it to the terminal so it can be loaded with freight. Since this is a Sunday the freight volume is quite low. Bergen is undergoing massive changes these days as they are getting ready to couple the old, and refurbished, Ulriken tunnel to the network. At the same time they are making huge changes to the freight terminal with longer tracks, parking areas for trains and, the most important point, the possibility to depart directly from the terminal track. This will make it so much more easier and more effective. But we will still have to do the go-around on arrival so we get the loco in the correct end. Hehe.
    Other moments in this video is the signalling failure between Voss and Reimegrend causing massive delays throught the network. Those delays changes where we meet trains in the opposite direction. In this case I used this chance to fill up my thermos with Covfefe at Voss.
    This trip also show a really close call with a beautiful stag just after Geilo.
    ENJOY!

    I'm sure I'm not the only one who was thinking, right at the beginning, "What is she doing in the Bergen passenger area". But it was just a long green train in the way of where she was really going.

    I watched a LOT of Norwegian train videos, mostly yours. It must have been an enormous task to bore holes thorugh mountains and build bridges over deep valleys for the railways. I can't imagine the resources needed to do all that work.😗

    Awesome video and really gr8 camera brings excellent night picture! As for northern lights I also heard Sami legend saying that when winter fox go hunting, she sweep snowflakes from the hills with her bushy tail. And these flakes are shining during the long winter nights. Thats why Sami called northern lights with a word: "Revontulet" which means "Fox Lights".

    A lot of snowshed rebuilding in metal going on, I see. Also a lot of new wood for repairs in the other ones. I imagine the metalwork will save a great deal on the regular maintenance to the snowsheds which must take place every summer. It must be a never-ending job for the maintenance people.

    RailCowGirl, if I understand correctly you drive this route every few days. And yet, I can understand that this is not something you can be tired of. The scenery is so beautiful, with changing weather and seasons, light and dark, that each time you drive it is a new experience. And the tunnels have their own magic. Great to watch.
    (Only drawback, maybe: they seem to be building more and more light metal tunnels in the higher areas, which reduces the views. Is that because of the snow, to minimise the need to clear the track?)

    • @RailCowGirl
      @RailCowGirl  ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I am a retired Conductor since 2004 after 38 years of service with the Chicago & North Western/Union Pacific. I am just amazed at the infrastructure of your railroads compared to ours. I really wish we'd get with it in this country. In my early career we still had intercity trains, but not since 1971 when AMTRAK took over, and they are a poor example of passenger service as freight trains have priority. Love your videos, keep it up. Thanks for entertaining this old man.

    At first, I was thinking-she's not going to take the El 18 again-. But then, that is impossible, since you are driving freight trains. So you went around (scary face to the EL18) and found the locomotive in a corner. I know of this spur. I read the book about it. A few things to pick out: low clouds nearly all the way to Myrdal; the reflections in the lake near Vieren; the buck, nearly escaping the train; and a rabbit crossing the track in Hol. When watching this, one would not epect the sky to clear up, and see the Northern Lights later on. And: it seems, no ride goes without a signalling failure. I enjoyed this trip very much. Thank you. It was very worth while waiting. Excellent.

    I love the view with the new video camera they are so sharp and the scenery is absolutely stunning. Where is the new freight terminal being located? I truly missed your videos and have waited for this new video. Keep putting out videos when ever possible and believe the delay must be from the reopening from COVID and your working longer hours and vacations are sorely need so you don’t get burnt out.

    Hi RCG, nice to have you back after a little bit of a break.
    Just watching as you go thru Myrdal...and couldn't help but think you'll probably never have the opportunity to go down the "roller coaster" to Flam, again :(

    • @RailCowGirl
      @RailCowGirl  ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, that is correct. I'm not running passenger trains anymore, since I'm not working for that company. That also means that I won't be going down to Flåm anymore either. I'm just glad I quit when I did. the charm of the Flåm Railway will be gone when it is converted to ETCS/ERTMS.

      Used to go all the way down to the harbor in the good old days, but now it just stops inside the tunnel at the gates. It goes really far in as you can fit two whole trains in there. Sadly the loco can not go in due to the shape of the tunnel.
