Fun fact: Finse is the the location for the Battle of Hoth scenes in Star Wars: The empire strikes back. They had conditions like this to cope with during filming. Harrison Ford who played Han Solo in the movie was on a train who was stopped at Geilo because of the weather. So the filmcrew had to come and pick him up with a rotary snowplow, like the one we see when arriving at Finse station.
I've watched this one several times now. I'll never get tired of it. Such a peaceful journey through stupendous scenery with a lovely blanket of snow. A truly beautiful country. From this side of the camera, I can't imagine why it's harrowing but maybe the conditions are rather testing for you. Thank you HCG, your channel is my favourite and I always look forward to your next post. Keep them coming!
I have to say I’m full of admiration for you & your fellow drivers & train crews but especially for the tunnellers,the engineers & the electricians etc who made those tunnels,laid the tracks and erected the electric power lines those mountain sides are frighteningly narrow in places and may I be the first or one of them to wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year

I have never seen videos as mesmerizing and relaxing as these! I can't get over how fast you go, yet you can't see the tracks! The effect of going through the tunnels sometimes reminds me of the Stargate sequence from 2001. This, too is an Ultimate Trip!!!
In conditions like this I'd love to see a couple of rear facing cameras showing the amount of snow these Herculean monsters actually move! Fantastic footage!

[must be really expensive, can't even figure out from Maastricht to let's say Kautokeino / the farrest north a train gets/ or any other nice pittoreske hidden little village on ' Planet Hoth'. ] p.s. Haha, thanks a lot! The train only goes to Bodø, and then you have to get a bus or a car to go further north. And there is another train between Narvik and Kiruna in Sweden, called the Arctic Train. On the train to Bodø you can buy hot chocolate on board ;)
Hi HCG, another video I enjoyed, what I don't get is what do those people who live in those houses at Hallingskeid and Finse do for a living let alone survive under those extreme conditions. Always enjoy learning more about Norway since I have become a big fan of your famous singer Sissel Kyrkjebo who I listen to often. Thanks again for all the work you do to put this video online. PC
No one lives in Hallingskeid. The buildings you see are cabins. People go there during weekends and holidays. In Finse only a small amount of people live, they work in the Finse 1222 hotel and the Tourist Cabin and at the station.

Here in the UK the whole rail network grinds to a halt if we get an inch {2.5cm} of snow ,the excuse they use every time is, its the wrong type of snow

And trying to figure out what kind of brackets will be on the next pole. Seems there are several types of insulators, from porcelain to disc styles to the present polymer standoffs, and just about as many different styles of catenary poles and ceiling brackets.
For a few years now I've watched these magnificent Scandinavian snow covered mountain train show's and I am yet to see smoke coming out of 1 single chimney. Surely this isn't the VIKING coming out in you people is it that you can actually brave the cold like this? There has to be a trick to it. The train ride's are worth every moment to sit here in Awe, just looking for Dinosaur's to step out of the rock's. In places it is so Jurassic but so surreal.
@@RailCowGirl I LOVE a good blizzard!!! Nothing better then walking with my dog at night when it's over with a big moon out!!! Heck I walk in it when it's howling[ the wind not the dog].
@@glennsgirl7183 I was in a white out once. Couldn't see 3 ft in any direction. Couldn't see where I was going, and if I back tracked, I couldn't see where I'd been, cause the snow was covering the tracks. It was a bit unnerving, not knowing where you are. Had to wait it out, a few hours later, was able to walk a couple miles down the road to safty. Wouldn't do that again, if I had the choice.
Cool footage--very soothing. I was in Narvik years ago; not sure where this is in relation to that. I wonder what the folks in these little towns do. Is there local industry? Do they farm and/or hunt? Do they have to make their own clothing and shape cookware from stone? Where is the nearest dentist? Have they heard that the Beatles broke up?
(Hallingskeid - Finse) It's quite common for the headlights to get caked with snow, but the upper projector usually stays clear and helps a lot. But there is even worse experience when the wipers fail in such weather - you are completely blind. It happened to me once - I had to drive at 25 km/h instead of 130, looking through the open side window in strong wind, snow and -12°. I called to ask a spare locomotive and stopped at the second station (the first was under reconstruction). As a result the cab got full of snow, I got a cold, my express train got 2 h delay and the passengers got a pleasant journey and likely got their connections missed.
Have you ever experienced breakdowns en-route or wires coming down? I'm sure maintenance on the line is of extreme importance. How often do crews patrol the lines ahead of you?

This is when you need to trust your equipment and experience. Imagine the guys who would have to replace or repair the rail, in the BLIZZARD.
@@Claytone-Records they have machines to do all the heavy work now, unless it's a derailment, but still mostly machines.
