      Slab body. Skinny neck. Headstock is sweet and I read somewhere Kurt's cobain's jagstang had a similar 3&3 Headstock design but fender had to fenderize it. Hard tail. I'm lefty so I've only played Eastwood copy's but I've played an upside down mosrite. Makes me want one now just thinking about it

      Just make sure you're OK with the neck. I love the slim neck on mine, but if you don't like it and just can't adjust to it, your better option would be a Hallmark 60 Custom or 65 Custom.

I was heartbroken when he finally called and picked it up. I had some great times playing it, and it was my main guitar while learning to play. I played it through an Ampeg Gemini II amp. He was quite a few years older than me and taught me my very first simple pentatonic lick. I still use it to this day. Looking back he really inspired me to stick with the guitar and I haven't put it down since. Tried to find him on Facebook to thank him, but no luck.

      He owned two actual Mosrites in his life/career. A rare-as-hell Gospel (similar color to the one in this video) that he used before Nevermind was recorded - was said to be one of his favorites and is why he never smashed it, but for what ever reason he eventually pawned it - it has since been auctioned off for HUGE amounts, but it's also because the model that it was was apparently rare (something to the effect of "It is the only known example of a Mark IV style Mosrite Gospel model", and there's only two in existence, the one Kurt had, and the daughter of Mosrite's founder Semie Moseley has the other one). Anyone can find video clips from earlier Nirvana shows where he used the Gospel (Motor Sports show in 1990, North Shore Surf Club 1990, and a rehearsal video they made in 1991 as just a few examples). The second Mosrite Kurt owned, was blue, and apparently had been damaged at some point (water damage I think?), he gave it to Pat Smear, and it IS the guitar that can be seen during their SNL 1993 performance (Pat is playing it). kurtsguitarsnow.blogspot.com/2009/02/1960s-mosrite-gospel.html

      From what I understand about Mosrite, he actually owned two Mark V's, a blue one as said given to Pat Smear after it was water damaged, and then a "Gospel" one for whatever reason they call a Mark IV, even though I can't find any evidence of other "Mark IV" guitars. It was probably a prototype for what they would call the Mark V after Mosrite lost the contract with the Ventures name.
      Originally these guitars were student models called the "Ventures II", the first version being the Johnny Ramone guitar with the slab body, made in limited numbers in 1965. After Semie Mosley thought these guitars looked too cheap, he made up the second version Ventures II, which after losing the Ventures contract became known as the Mark V, but are the same guitar. I'm guessing Kurt's "Gospel" was a prototype between these guitars. Later Semie would also use the "Gospel" name on guitars that later became called Celebrity's.

    • @101Volts
      @101Volts 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's not quite how it is, the "Ventures Mark V" models got the name in 1966 (but not right away.) they rebranded it as the "Mark V" when the Ventures contract ended. As for the "Gospel" name, initially was a name that Semie Moseley put on guitars he gave away to churches but he later used it to help get back on his feet when he lost the Mosrite name and that's where Cobain's Gospel MK V comes in; it has a very high serial number for a MK V, somewhere in the 1400-1600 range.* Strangely enough it has the truss rod adjustment at the _body_ end (1967-1968 models had it at the headstock) so maybe Semie got an earlier neck that wasn't stamped and made do with what he had? He had a habit of doing that.
      EDIT: I may be wrong about the truss rod adjustment being at the body end.
      EDIT 2: Cobain's was B1697, the highest number I've heard of is B1700.

    Johnny actually played a MkII, but it's cool.

    • @101Volts
      @101Volts 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Mosrite Trivia: It was a "Ventures II" in 1965; not a "Mark II," which is a name that's been used since Japan started reissuing it. However, Mosrite confusingly had a second Ventures II model that replaced the first one that Johnny had, and the later one was eventually re-named the "Ventures Mark V." To designate which Ventures II is which, Mosrite enthusiasts have started calling them the "Ventures II 'Slab Body'" and "Ventures II 'German Carve'" models, or "Slab Ventures II" and "Carved Ventures II."
      I have a Carved Ventures II.

    Jimi Hendrix used a Fender Jazzmaster that he played upside down to make it Lefthanded. He used a jazzmaster for years before buying his Strat along with a Duosonic before that. Jimi can be seen with his Fender Jazzmaster during his work with Little Richard and The Isley Brothers before he went solo. Semie Mosley originally worked for Pre CBS Fender and designed his Mosrite Guitar as a "Reverse Style" Jazzmaster body. The Ventures played Jazzmasters before they switched to Mosrites.Pretty sure Hendrix never played a mosrite and its the "upside down" Jazzmaster you're thinking of which is very similar to the mosrite body. Fender made the "Supersonic" years later inspired from Jimis upside down Jazzmaster. That's why Supersonics have a reverse headstock. Steven Seagal owns Jimis Jazzmaster presently.. I Enjoy the channel alot :) Thanks for all the videos!

      His Gospel was made when Mosrite went bankrupt, Semie Moseley (the company's founder and president) built guitars under that name until he re-acquired the Mosrite name. Really, his guitar was probably a Mark V that was about ready to be assembled when they went bankrupt. Dunno where the "Mk IV" name comes in, as far as I know they never had that name maybe unless Moseley wanted to avoid calling it "MK V" while he didn't have the rights.

      @@olivermaloneyscott6464 Kurt _did_ have two Mosrite MK V models, but he only played the Sunburst "Gospel" one (Serial number B1697, one of the last made*) in 1990 (Edit: 1990 - early 1991,) and then he gave the Blue one to Pat Smear in 1993. Kurt didn't play them much; he played cheap Univox Hi Flyer (Mosrite Copy) models more often. The White one in the Heart Shaped Box video is a Univox.
      * The last known numbered Mosrite Mark V model made is B1700. No higher numbers are known yet, B1700 may be the last one.

      @jfo3000 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've played one, it was a great shred neck, for me anyway.

    • @101Volts
      @101Volts 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There's a reason why Johnny Ramone played these almost exclusively for long-term fast barre chord playing. The necks aren't wide, and they're not deep. He said they were perfect for playing barre chords, darn right they are. Also, I play my 66 a lot, and I can wrap my thumb around the neck to play weird chords any time I want.

    I loved the Ventures back in the day. Here in the UK the Shadows were the fave band but i always preferred the Ventures (still do) Would love to own one of these :-)

    • @larrygeetar9309
      @larrygeetar9309 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +oldbluesboy Interesting how those two bands affected the guitar playing
      population on each side of The Pond. Most UK'ers take The Shadows, and
      Hank Marvin was God to them. I get it, I really do. He introduced the Strat
      to England, after all! I grew up on The Ventures and I think they were less
      stylized and more versatile while not as original, I guess. But they were incred-
      ibly well versed in all forms of pop, rock, surf, anything on the radio. They set
      the standard for early American guitar bands. Rhythm and lead, rhythm and
      lead. Like, oh say ... The Beatles? Stones? Beach Boys? Ventures and
      Shadows were popular at exactly the same time and each had a profound
      influence. Can't get much better than Apache, and Walk Don't Run, right?
      I can tell you that those Ventures guitar players were way better than anything
      else out there except Scotty Moore, James Burton and, of course (RIP)
      Chuck Berry.

      Many don't, but I do. I've copped his guitar tone pretty well with my 66 Mosrite, but I never uploaded a video. His tone is heavy with overdrive, thick strings, and alternate tunings.

      You and I seem to be the only ones here who know about him. That's a bit sad, considering how talented Joe Maphis was. This Ventures body shape was also *his* model originally, then the Ventures showed up and Joe got another model with a fatter body later.
